    Parsing Perceptions of Place: Locative and Textual Representations of Place Émilie-Gamelin on Twitter

    We increasingly engage in geographies mediated by social media, which is changing how we experience and produce places. This raises questions about how ‘place’ is conceived and received in networked virtual spaces. Place has remained difficult to grasp in both geography and communications studies that utilize social media data. To attend to this, I first develop a conceptual framework that bridges the phenomenology of spatiality with the communication of place. I then present a case study of Place Émilie-Gamelin in Montreal: a plaza located atop the city’s busiest transit hub. Despite its geographic centrality, it is a liminal space appropriated by marginalized groups and contentious political movements. Since 2015, it has been subject to a city-led revitalization program with intentions of attracting party-goers and tourists. Using a communications geography framework, I collected a year’s worth of tweets, first, employing a filter to capture georeferenced tweets in and around the study site, and second, using the site’s toponyms to retrieve tweets through textual queries. To understand these representations, I coded them by relevance, theme and communicative function. Results showed a place evolving in scope, name and meaning, reflecting diverging flows and uses. I found that there were more textual connotations of the study site than there were geotweets, and that the former were more diverse in their representation of place. The thesis demonstrates how promotional content on Twitter should be more critically analyzed in concert with expressive and descriptive tweets and geotweets, and that this implies spatial ontologies and data collection methods that consider a place on social media as a discursive construction. This is especially so since Twitter has become increasingly ‘platial’ through internal changes and its entwinement with other social media platforms: changes which require consideration in all Twitter-based spatial and textual analyses. The study provides an updated perspective on Twitter’s use in the spatial humanities, GIScience and geography and contributes to those interested in applying more nuanced cartographies of places

    Public participation in the Geoweb era: Geosocial media use in local government

    Advances in spatially enabled information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided governments with the potential to enhance public participation and to collaborate with citizens. This dissertation critically assesses this potential and identifies the opportunities and challenges for local governments to embark on emerging geo-enabled practices. This dissertation first proposes a new typology for classifying geo-enabled practices related to public participation (termed here as geo-participation) and demonstrates the emerging opportunities presented by geo-participation to improve government-citizen collaboration and government operations. This dissertation then provides in-depth examinations of geosocial media as an exemplar geo-participation practice. The first empirical study assesses the potential of repurposing geosocial media data to gauge public opinions. The study suggests that geosocial media can help identify geographies of public perceptions concerning public facilities and services and have the potential to complement other methods of gauging public sentiment. The second empirical study assesses the usefulness of geosocial media for sharing non-emergency issues and identifies an important opportunity of enabling citizen collaboration for reporting and sharing non-emergency issues. Altogether, this dissertation makes several conceptual, empirical, and practical contributions to local government adoption of geo-participation. Conceptually, the proposed typology lays the foundation for researching and implementing geo-participation practices. Empirically, this dissertation tells a story of opportunities and challenges that sheds light on how local governments may adopt geosocial media to solicit citizen input and enable new forms of government-citizen interaction. Practically, this dissertation develops a tool for processing text-based citizen input and models of implementing geosocial media reporting that can help local government develop proper strategies of adopting geosocial media

    USING SOCIALLY SENSED BIG DATA TO MODEL PATTERNS AND GEOGRAPHIC CONTEXT OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES IN CITIES

    Understanding dynamic interactions between human activities and land-use structure in a city is a key lens to explore the city as a complex system. This dissertation contributes to understanding the complexity of urban dynamics by gaining knowledge of the interactions between human activities and city land-use structures by utilizing free-accessible socially sensed data sources, and building upon recent research trend and technologies in geographical information science, urban study, and computer science. This dissertation addresses three main questions related to human dynamics: 1) how human activities in an urban environment are shaped by socioeconomic status and the intra-city land-use structure, and how in turn, the knowledge of socioeconomic status-activity relationships can contribute to understanding the social landscape of a city; 2) how different types of activities are located in space and time in three U.S. cities and how the spatiotemporal activity patterns in these cities characterize the activity profile of different neighborhoods in the cities; and 3) how recent socially sensed information on human activities can be integrated with widely-used remotely sensed geographical data to create a novel approach for discovering patterns of land use in cities that are otherwise lacking in up to date land use information. This dissertation models the associations between socioeconomics and mobility in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area as a case study and applies the learned associations for inferring geographical patterns of socioeconomic status (SES) solely using the socially sensed data. This dissertation also implements a semi-automated workflow to retrieve activity details from socially sensed Twitter data in Washington, D.C., the City of Baltimore, and New York City. The dissertation integrates remotely-sensed imagery and socially sensed data to model the dynamics associated with changing land-use types in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore metropolitan area over time
