Set-based design of mechanical systems with design robustness integrated
This paper presents a method for parameter design of mechanical products based on a set-based approach. Set-based concurrent engineering emphasises on designing in a multi-stakeholder environment with concurrent involvement of the stakeholders in the design process. It also encourages flexibility in design through communication in terms of ranges instead of fixed point values and subsequent alternative solutions resulting from intersection of these ranges. These alternative solutions can then be refined and selected according to the designers’ preferences and clients’ needs. This paper presents a model and tools for integrated flexible design that take into account the manufacturing variations as well as the design objectives for finding inherently robust solutions using QCSP transformation through interval analysis. In order to demonstrate the approach, an example of design of rigid flange coupling with a variable number of bolts and a choice of bolts from ISO M standard has been resolved and demonstrated
Handling software upgradeability problems with MILP solvers
Upgradeability problems are a critical issue in modern operating systems. The
problem consists in finding the "best" solution according to some criteria, to
install, remove or upgrade packages in a given installation. This is a
difficult problem: the complexity of the upgradeability problem is NP complete
and modern OS contain a huge number of packages (often more than 20 000
packages in a Linux distribution). Moreover, several optimisation criteria have
to be considered, e.g., stability, memory efficiency, network efficiency. In
this paper we investigate the capabilities of MILP solvers to handle this
problem. We show that MILP solvers are very efficient when the resolution is
based on a linear combination of the criteria. Experiments done on real
benchmarks show that the best MILP solvers outperform CP solvers and that they

Knowledge revision in systems based on an informed tree search strategy : application to cartographic generalisation
Many real world problems can be expressed as optimisation problems. Solving
this kind of problems means to find, among all possible solutions, the one that
maximises an evaluation function. One approach to solve this kind of problem is
to use an informed search strategy. The principle of this kind of strategy is
to use problem-specific knowledge beyond the definition of the problem itself
to find solutions more efficiently than with an uninformed strategy. This kind
of strategy demands to define problem-specific knowledge (heuristics). The
efficiency and the effectiveness of systems based on it directly depend on the
used knowledge quality. Unfortunately, acquiring and maintaining such knowledge
can be fastidious. The objective of the work presented in this paper is to
propose an automatic knowledge revision approach for systems based on an
informed tree search strategy. Our approach consists in analysing the system
execution logs and revising knowledge based on these logs by modelling the
revision problem as a knowledge space exploration problem. We present an
experiment we carried out in an application domain where informed search

Accelerated physical emulation of Bayesian inference in spiking neural networks
The massively parallel nature of biological information processing plays an
important role for its superiority to human-engineered computing devices. In
particular, it may hold the key to overcoming the von Neumann bottleneck that
limits contemporary computer architectures. Physical-model neuromorphic devices
seek to replicate not only this inherent parallelism, but also aspects of its
microscopic dynamics in analog circuits emulating neurons and synapses.
However, these machines require network models that are not only adept at
solving particular tasks, but that can also cope with the inherent
imperfections of analog substrates. We present a spiking network model that
performs Bayesian inference through sampling on the BrainScaleS neuromorphic
platform, where we use it for generative and discriminative computations on
visual data. By illustrating its functionality on this platform, we implicitly
demonstrate its robustness to various substrate-specific distortive effects, as
well as its accelerated capability for computation. These results showcase the
advantages of brain-inspired physical computation and provide important

Limitations of Algebraic Approaches to Graph Isomorphism Testing
We investigate the power of graph isomorphism algorithms based on algebraic
reasoning techniques like Gr\"obner basis computation. The idea of these
algorithms is to encode two graphs into a system of equations that are
satisfiable if and only if if the graphs are isomorphic, and then to (try to)
decide satisfiability of the system using, for example, the Gr\"obner basis
algorithm. In some cases this can be done in polynomial time, in particular, if
the equations admit a bounded degree refutation in an algebraic proof systems
such as Nullstellensatz or polynomial calculus. We prove linear lower bounds on
the polynomial calculus degree over all fields of characteristic different from
2 and also linear lower bounds for the degree of Positivstellensatz calculus
derivations.
We compare this approach to recently studied linear and semidefinite
programming approaches to isomorphism testing, which are known to be related to
the combinatorial Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm. We exactly characterise the
power of the Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm in terms of an algebraic proof system
that lies between degree-k Nullstellensatz and degree-k polynomial calculus
Phase Transitions of the Typical Algorithmic Complexity of the Random Satisfiability Problem Studied with Linear Programming
Here we study the NP-complete -SAT problem. Although the worst-case
complexity of NP-complete problems is conjectured to be exponential, there
exist parametrized random ensembles of problems where solutions can typically
be found in polynomial time for suitable ranges of the parameter. In fact,
random -SAT, with as control parameter, can be solved quickly
for small enough values of . It shows a phase transition between a
satisfiable phase and an unsatisfiable phase. For branch and bound algorithms,
which operate in the space of feasible Boolean configurations, the empirically
hardest problems are located only close to this phase transition. Here we study
-SAT () and the related optimization problem MAX-SAT by a linear
programming approach, which is widely used for practical problems and allows
for polynomial run time. In contrast to branch and bound it operates outside
the space of feasible configurations. On the other hand, finding a solution
within polynomial time is not guaranteed. We investigated several variants like
including artificial objective functions, so called cutting-plane approaches,
and a mapping to the NP-complete vertex-cover problem. We observed several
easy-hard transitions, from where the problems are typically solvable (in
polynomial time) using the given algorithms, respectively, to where they are
not solvable in polynomial time. For the related vertex-cover problem on random
graphs these easy-hard transitions can be identified with structural properties
of the graphs, like percolation transitions. For the present random -SAT
problem we have investigated numerous structural properties also exhibiting
clear transitions, but they appear not be correlated to the here observed
easy-hard transitions. This renders the behaviour of random -SAT more
complex than, e.g., the vertex-cover problem.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Stochastic multi-period multi-product multi-objective Aggregate Production Planning model in multi-echelon supply chain
In this paper a multi-period multi-product multi-objective aggregate production planning (APP) model is proposed for an uncertain multi-echelon supply chain considering financial risk, customer satisfaction, and human resource training. Three conflictive objective functions and several sets of real constraints are considered concurrently in the proposed APP model. Some parameters of the proposed model are assumed to be uncertain and handled through a two-stage stochastic programming (TSSP) approach. The proposed TSSP is solved using three multi-objective solution procedures, i.e., the goal attainment technique, the modified ε-constraint method, and STEM method. The whole procedure is applied in an automotive resin and oil supply chain as a real case study wherein the efficacy and applicability of the proposed approaches are illustrated in comparison with existing experimental production planning method
