Forms and processes of information systems evolution
The way in which software evolves over time has been much studied and is now fairly well-understood. What has been less thoroughly studied are the processes by which information systems β containing software as one component, but also with significant human and organisational aspects β evolve. In many organisations, few information systems are built at all from scratch, but rather are modified from or built on top of existing ones or bolted together from third-party components. In practice, the old division between design, implementation and maintenance has largely disappeared. In this paper, I discuss the nature of IS evolution. I make a distinction between planned (intentional and strategic) evolution, for which we can formulate a clear process; and unplanned (emergent and externally-driven) evolution, where we can simply study the dynamics of the process and be ready for events

Technological Evolution in Software Engineering
In all software development processes, the software must evolve in response to its environment or user needs to maintain satisfactory performance. If software doesnβt support change, it gradually becomes useless. With many organizations today, being software-centric organizations, this has huge implications for their business: evolve your software, or risk your software becoming gradually useless, and therefore, your entire business.
Technology Evolution is a highly relevant subject, Intelβs business model for the last 50 years, has been that of Mooreβs Law, a hardware centric Technology Evolution model. As a Software Engineer at Intel, our business group faces a similar issue, we must continually adapt, and evolve our software, in response to our customerβs needs, and current technology trends, if we donβt evolve our software, our competitors will evolve theirs faster, and our business group, will gradually cease to exist, without competitive, and evolving software.
The software evolution phenomenon was first identified in the late 60s though not termed as such till 1974. The goal of this article, is to explore the current literature on software evolution, and its impacts on software development activities, and software organizations. As a manager, and practicing Software Engineer, software evolvability, the ability, inter alia, for responsiveness and timely implementation of needed changes, will play an ever increasing more critical role in ensuring the survival of a society ever more dependent on computers
Towards a More Socially Sustainable Advanced Pilot Training by IntegratingWearable Augmented Reality Devices
For flying all types of turbine-engine airplanes, a pilot must undergo an intense type rating (TR) course. This study investigated the learning conditions and TR course content, and specifies the most difficult course elements that could be tackled by augmented reality (AR) applications. Because women are underrepresented in the worldwide pilot population, it is important to address gender-specific preferences and needs in the development of AR-based wearable technologies for advanced pilot training. A gender-sensitive survey of the learning conditions and course contents was conducted with 31 pilots and 22 instructors. Despite many similarities, the results confirm that there are gender-specific needs and preferences for the development of future AR-based applications for TR training. In addition, the views of both pilots’ and instructors’ are required to obtain a comprehensive assessment of the learning contents and conditions related to TR. The results also show that time pressure increased the perceived difficulty of the course for some trainees. These results are important because they indicate the directions to be taken in developing future AR-based training applications for a more learner-centered and inclusive TR training. Future directions to foster a socially sustainable development of AR-based training means for TR with special focus on gender diversity are presented
The evolution of the laws of software evolution. A discussion based on a systematic literature review
After more than 40 years of life, software evolution should be considered as a mature field. However, despite
such a long history, many research questions still remain open, and controversial studies about the validity
of the laws of software evolution are common. During the first part of these 40 years the laws themselves
evolved to adapt to changes in both the research and the software industry environments. This process
of adaption to new paradigms, standards, and practices stopped about 15 years ago, when the laws were
revised for the last time. However, most controversial studies have been raised during this latter period.
Based on a systematic and comprehensive literature review, in this paper we describe how and when the
laws, and the software evolution field, evolved. We also address the current state of affairs about the validity
of the laws, how they are perceived by the research community, and the developments and challenges that
are likely to occur in the coming years
