    Sustainability Design and Software: The Karlskrona Manifesto

    Sustainability has emerged as a broad concern for society. Many engineering disciplines have been grappling with challenges in how we sustain technical, social and ecological systems. In the software engineering community, for example, maintainability has been a concern for a long time. But too often, these issues are treated in isolation from one another. Misperceptions among practitioners and research communities persist, rooted in a lack of coherent understanding of sustainability, and how it relates to software systems research and practice. This article presents a cross-disciplinary initiative to create a common ground and a point of reference for the global community of research and practice in software and sustainability, to be used for effectively communicating key issues, goals, values and principles of sustainability design for software-intensive systems. The centrepiece of this effort is the Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design, a vehicle for a much needed conversation about sustainability within and beyond the software community, and an articulation of the fundamental principles underpinning design choices that affect sustainability. We describe the motivation for developing this manifesto, including some considerations of the genre of the manifesto as well as the dynamics of its creation. We illustrate the collaborative reflective writing process and present the current edition of the manifesto itself. We assess immediate implications and applications of the articulated principles, compare these to current practice, and suggest future steps

    Students of the social work professions generally are required to be placed in social work settings and to undergo assessment in the workplace during their training. These students are usually supported by qualified practice tutors who regularly meet with them and give feedback on their practice performance and progress. The support procedure sometimes is fragile and affects the quality of the students? learning experience. Through a user centered design approach, the Remora project aims to provide an integration of mobile software toolkits and social software applications to support work-based learning and assessment for social workers. Two main applications are created and deployed on two categories of portable devices to help practice workers in their administration, information sharing and collection of documents linking with competency learning resources. The applications are extendible to be applicable to any work-based learning situation

    The field of social work recognizes the need to evaluate one’s practice. Social work educators are mandated to prepare students to evaluate their own practices and be knowledgeable consumers of research. The goal of being competent in both of these is often challenged by the fact that many students do not initially understand the relationship between research and effective practice upon entering research classes. This Teaching Note was written to describe innovative techniques in a practice research course. This course uses innovative teaching practices including the use of freely available statistical software to teach students to analyze their data visually, descriptively, and statistically within the context of their practice evaluation projects that are conducted in vivo

    Collaborative Software Development in Agile Methodologies - Perspectives from Small Group Research

    Collaborative software development is a hallmark of agile methodologies such as Extreme Programming (XP). These methodologies have practices like pair programming, where two programmers collaboratively work on all aspects of software development. There is however a dearth of empirical research in this area. Studies with sound theoretical underpinnings and strong empirical rigor are called for to inform the software practice of the effectiveness of this important practice. While such collaborative working is relatively new to software community, small group research has grappled with it over the years looking for the task and other contingencies impacting the effectiveness of collaborative working versus individual working. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of some research streams in small group research and social psychology that could potentially inform IS research on collaborative software development. These small group research topics include group task typologies, individual versus group performance, social facilitation, social loafing, and group motivational gains. We then discuss implications for research on collaborative programming and provide some illustrative research questions

    The social construction of the software operation: Reinforcing effects in metrics programs

    In a large software company in Denmark, much effort was expended capturing metrics about the company’s software operation. The purpose of the metrics program was to change and improve the software operation. Writing software can be understood as a socially constructed practice, which can be analyzed using structuration theory. This structurational analysis showed that the company’s software operation followed an easily recognizable and widely understood pattern. The software operation was organized in terms of development projects leading to applications that then needed maintenance, and displayed a heavy focus on project development work and hitting the project deadline. Study of the metrics program (and the computer software underpinning it) revealed that the familiar pattern was also inscribed into the metrics software, heavily influencing the company’s metrics practice. Rather than challenge the underlying social practice of the software operation, the metrics program reinforced it by adopting the same underlying values. Our conclusion is that, under these circumstances, metrics programs are unlikely to result in radical changes to the software operation, and are best suited to small, incremental improvements

    Evaluation Development and Use in Social Work Practice

    Background: Social workers entering the profession typically receive little, if any, content or training on evaluation practice. This is, in part, due to limited course offerings outside of the typical courses in most schools of social work. In addition, practicing social workers who often serve in the role as field instructors have not fully embraced the use of research in practice, and tend to employ less rigorous evaluative methods.   Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the development and use of evaluation knowledge among social work practitioners who supervise social work students.   Setting: Not applicable.   Intervention: Not applicable.   Research Design: A mixed method, sequential research design within the context of an exploratory study was used to determine factors that facilitate evaluation, identify and prioritize evaluation competencies, and determine the extent to which evaluation constructs contribute to self efficacy, evaluation competency, evaluation influence, and leadership behaviors.   Data Collection and Analysis: A web-based survey was used followed by a participatory method that included the use of a web-based software to identify and prioritize activities that contribute to the development of evaluation knowledge and skill.   Findings: Results suggest social work education has a critical role in promoting evaluation practice, establishing evaluation practice competencies, and using evaluation results to inform policy and practice.   Keywords: social work practice, field education, evaluation practice, Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Educational Policy, and Accreditation Standards (EPAS
