    A toolbox for managing organisational issues in the early stage of the development of a ubiquitous computing application

    In this paper, we present a toolbox for the prospective management of organisational issues in ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing applications are developed to enable new services and new ways of working, to increase management control and to improve safety. However, they may also interfere with established work practices and may have unforeseen consequences for organisations. Despite their importance, such organisational issues are rarely addressed in ubiquitous computing innovation projects. Drawing on socio-technical design approaches and existing research on organisational issues in ubiquitous computing, we have developed a toolbox containing three tools for managing organisational issues of ubiquitous computing applications in the early stage of development. The toolbox supports the realisation of hoped-for benefits of ubiquitous computing in organisations and the management of unwanted organisational issues. The "work process tool” supports the description of envisioned work processes, including flexibility and variability requirements, changing responsibilities and different points of view. The "work system tool” analyses the alignment between a ubiquitous computing application and work systems task completeness, independency and the fit between regulation opportunities and requirements. The "human controllability tool” assesses how the control capabilities of workers are enabled or constrained by the new ubiquitous computing application. We show the applicability of the toolbox using a case study of an early stage ubiquitous computing technology innovation project, where the toolbox contributed to the set-up of the field trial and the development of application guideline

    The Mundane Computer: Non-Technical Design Challenges Facing Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence

    Interdisciplinary collaboration, to include those who are not natural scientists, engineers and computer scientists, is inherent in the idea of ubiquitous computing, as formulated by Mark Weiser in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, ubiquitous computing has remained largely a computer science and engineering concept, and its non-technical side remains relatively underdeveloped. The aim of the article is, first, to clarify the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration envisaged by Weiser. Second, the difficulties of understanding the everyday and weaving ubiquitous technologies into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it, as conceived by Weiser, are explored. The contributions of Anne Galloway, Paul Dourish and Philip Agre to creating an understanding of everyday life relevant to the development of ubiquitous computing are discussed, focusing on the notions of performative practice, embodied interaction and contextualisation. Third, it is argued that with the shift to the notion of ambient intelligence, the larger scale socio-economic and socio-political dimensions of context become more explicit, in contrast to the focus on the smaller scale anthropological study of social (mainly workplace) practices inherent in the concept of ubiquitous computing. This can be seen in the adoption of the concept of ambient intelligence within the European Union and in the focus on rebalancing (personal) privacy protection and (state) security in the wake of 11 September 2001. Fourth, the importance of adopting a futures-oriented approach to discussing the issues arising from the notions of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence is stressed, while the difficulty of trying to achieve societal foresight is acknowledged

    Ubiqutious transport systems: Negotiating context through a mobile-stationary interface

    Ubiquitous computing environments grant organizations a multitude of dynamic digital traces composed of context signals emanating from embedded and mobile components. However, previous research indicates that the utility of context data is frequently hampered by a priori interpretations of context embodied within the acquiring technologies themselves. This paper reports an 18 month action research study seeking to rearrange an industry wide assemblage of stationary, mobile, and embedded technologies and associated organizations for the purpose of facilitating cross-organizational access to reinterpretable digital traces of context data. This was done by embedding the notion of seamfulness in an open standardized interface as a means to shift the locus of interpretation of context data in ubiquitous transport systems. In environments such as these, open access to context data is of essential importance to create opportunities for flexible interpretations of mobile work for uses not anticipated by preconfigured representations. However, this requirement essentially clashed with the business strategies of actors providing context data acquiring technology. This clash resulted in a negotiated design compromise of limited access and a well defined expansion of additional uses of context data between the involved actor groups. Addressing the issue of how organizations can derive value from context data, the contribution of this paper is an analysis of the complexity of accomplishing links between socio-technical elements in ubiquitous computing environments

    Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home

    UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive lifestyle. The aim of this paper is to explore and elaborate these tensions further by examining the human values surrounding future domestic UbiComp solutions. Drawing on envisioning and contravisioning, we probe members of the public (N=28) through the presentation and focus group discussion of two contrasting animated video scenarios, where one is inspired by "calm" and the other by "engaging" visions of future UbiComp technology. By analysing the reasoning of our participants, we identify and elaborate a number of relevant values involved in balancing the two perspectives.
