Sociological Strategies for Developing Community Resources: Services for Abused Wives as an Example
There has been increased concern for the problem of family violence in recent years, and an accompanying interest in providing services to meet the needs of victims. This has led to research efforts, as well as to the development of new community services. Clinical sociologists can do much to assure that the development of community resources and empirical research in this area precede hand in hand. This article reports on the work of a committee, chaired by the author, which used social research and knowledge of sociological principles in the development of services for battered wives in a major metropolitan area. Three major intervention strategies were employed in the committee setting: provision of information about social structure and its consequences to enable members to develop more effective plans; use of sociological principles and data to make people aware of aspects of the situation of which they had not been aware; and involvement of group members and other individuals in the planning process to maximize the likelihood of an investment in the outcome. Committee activities are discussed as a means of indicating both successes and difficulties with these strategies
Integrity Reinforcement Management in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri (MTsN) 2 Tasikmalaya
Integrity is one character instilled into the participants of Character Education Reinforcement (Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter-PPK) policies, as mentioned in the Government Regulation Number 87 of 2017. The research revealed integrity reinforcement management in MTsN 2 Tasikmalaya. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. The results showed that the management of integrity character education in MTsN included several activities. (1) Planning, conducted by the stakeholder representatives to discuss the intra-curricular activities (learning), co-curricular (enrichment), extracurricular, and counseling. (2) Organizing, conducted by the principal, committee, teachers, and staff of the madrasah. (3) Implementing the activities, treating the civic education subject as the leading sector for implementing integrity reinforcement. (4) Monitoring by the principal, vice-principal in charge of the students, and civic education and counseling teachers. The management success was supported by the surrounding environments of the madrasah, teachers, and staff (internal) and parents and society (external). Meanwhile, the program faced some obstacles from the social media and the social environment of the learners. The findings imply the need for good cooperation between the madrasah, parents, and society. Monitoring the social media and the social interaction among learners become the concerns of the stakeholders
Football diplomacy redux: the 2015 Asian Cup and Australia's engagement with Asia
n 2015 Australia will host the Asian Football Confederation’s Asian Cup, bringing together the top 16 national teams in Asia. The tournament will provide opportunities for government, business and community groups to strengthen their engagement with Asia. In order to understand and leverage those opportunities, the Lowy Institute and the Asian Cup Local Organising Committee held a day-long conference on 23 November 2012, bringing together senior government, business, tourism, sport and community representatives. Drawing on the ideas generated at the conference, this report outlines how key stakeholders can use the Asian Cup to strengthen Australia’s ties with Asia.Key findings:To leverage the engagement and networking opportunities of the Asian Cup, key stakeholders should form of a Football Asia Council to pool scarce resources, build synergies and avoid duplication The Council should oversee the creation of a digital hub as a one-stop-shop for information about both the Asian Cup and the various football diplomacy networking opportunities around it, along with an associated social media platform Government and FFA should provided targeted support to those groups already planning football diplomacy activities around the Asian Cup
A Tale of Two Tailgates: Jacksonville State University Library\u27s 2016 to 2017 Tailgate Transformation
The Houston Cole Library (HCL) welcomed Jacksonville State University (JSU) students, faculty, staff and the greater community to the new academic year by hosting its first-ever Tailgate event on Thursday, September 15, 2016. HCL outreach activities will never be the same. The Tailgate was unique for JSU in its involvement of the greater Jacksonville community, its coordination of Library departments, and its use of University-wide collaboration in both planning stages and attendance. The atmosphere was relaxed and fostered a comfortable environment in which attendees could get to know their Library. Gate counts increased dramatically. The Ad-hoc Tailgate Planning Committee discussed the positives and negatives of Tailgate 2016 and immediately started planning for 2017. Many changes were made to marketing, organizational strategies, and timeframe. Students were informed of Tailgate events by bookmarks, posters, and social media. October 26th, 2017, the second-annual HCL Tailgate was held with greater success. Lunch and door prizes were provided thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library and other community partners. Marching band members played in front of the Library and Cocky, the JSU mascot, greeted attendees. Activities included librarian introductions, trivia games, and prizes. The event attracts over 200 people each year. Survey results included appreciation for tailgate activities and revealed many first-time Library visitors. Informal responses from Tailgate attendees and Library staff indicated a strong desire to repeat the Tailgate event. Discover steps to host a touchdown tailgate event for your outreach needs

Assessing Effective Utilisation of Instructional Time by Secondary School Teachers in Northern Region, Ghana
This study investigated teachers’ total utilisation of allocated instructional time and its’ effects on students learning in Senior High Schools in Northern Region, Ghana. Despite several conceptual and theoretical models regarding the significance of “time” in effective teaching and learning, little is known on how teachers in Ghana spend their time in the school and how the usage varies across SHS in Ghana. This qualitative-case study investigated teacher use of instructional time and draws its validity from Caroll’s model of school learning (Carroll, 1963) and Bloom’s Mastery learning approach to teaching (Bloom, 1971). The study found that factors that impede total utilisation of instructional time in the selected schools include teacher absenteeism (including maternity and study leave) without alternative arrangement, inadequate preparation, poor teacher-student relationship, teacher involvement in social activities (including social ceremonies) instead of attending to the allotted instructional time, delays at school’s events (including Headmaster’s assembly), and teachers’ attendance to school wide activities (including sporting activities, committee and board meetings). The study therefore recommends effective planning process that accommodates teacher replacement in times of leave, ill-health and other natural phenomenon, and payment of teachers based on instructional time utilisation. Sustainable Mosque Designs from the Perspectives of Social Inclusion: Comparisons of Four Mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
One of the major conflicts continuously occurring in Malaysia is the issue of race and religious relationships. Today, houses of worship in Malaysia have always been seen as isolated entities that can add to race relations and nation-building conflicts. This issue has led to the planning of houses of worship as nation-building elements in forging social inclusion among the different religious buildings of other faiths. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate mosques' social inclusion characteristics, which can contribute to the more extensive framing of Malaysian planning policy on the sustainable design of houses of worship. To reflect the ideal of SDG 11, Sustainable cities and communities and SDG 16, Peace, justice and strong institutions, it is essential to identify social inclusivity as one of the primary design approaches for any Islamic institutions and mosques designs. Should the mosques be part of the nation-building entities and not just community centres for each faith? This research covers selected case studies mainly in Kuala Lumpur, representing the city with the most educated and diverse multi-faith context. Four significant mosques were selected and studied through observations and interviews data collection approach. The research findings indicate that elements such as scale, massing, permeability, visibility, territoriality, and iconic imagery are essential to design criteria for mosques. Significantly, this research provides suggestions and guidelines for designers and committee leaders of all religions in Malaysia to re-look at the activities and planning aspects of their houses of worship. Furthermore, it helps to promote inclusive elements such as social interaction, tolerance, and understanding of different religious beliefs. Hence, accepting these multi-faith centres will create a more integrated, harmonious and sustainable community.
