[Excerpt] This fourth issue in the current four-volume series of Social Security Programs Throughout the World reports on the countries of the Americas. The combined findings of this series, which also includes volumes on Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and Africa, are published at six-month intervals over a two-year period. Each volume highlights features of social security programs in the particular region. The information contained in these volumes is crucial to our efforts, and those of researchers in other countries, to review different ways of approaching social security challenges that will enable us to adapt our social security systems to the evolving needs of individuals, households, and families. These efforts are particularly important as each nation faces major demographic changes, especially the increasing number of aged persons, as well as economic and fiscal issues

[Excerpt] This third issue in the current four-volume series of Social Security Programs Throughout the World reports on the countries of Africa. The combined findings of this series, which also includes volumes on Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas, are published at six-month intervals over a two-year period. Each volume highlights features of social security programs in the particular region. This guide serves as an overview of programs in all regions. A few political jurisdictions have been excluded because they have no social security system or have issued no information regarding their social security legislation. In the absence of recent information, national programs reported in previous volumes may also be excluded. In this volume on Africa, the data reported are based on laws and regulations in force in January 2011 or on the last date for which information has been received

ABSTRACT The lack of variety of learning methods used by teachers in delivering learning, results in students being passive and less actively involved in learning activities in class. Therefor, it is important for teachers to have the right strategy to overcome the learning difficulties faced by students. One method that can be used to stimulate students to think creatively is to use the mind mapping method. The purpose of this research is to find out is there any effect of using mind mapping methods on social studies learning outcomes for students in junior high schools. This type of research is experimental research. The population in this study were all students of class VIII and the samples were students of class VIII A and VIII B which were selected through purposive sampling technique. Data collection instruments include tests and questionnaires. Analysis of the data used is the percentage test, normality test, homogenity test, NGain test, independent sample t-test. The results of the study were based on the analysis of the final data t-test test were obtained a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.027 < 0.05. Because a sig (2-tailed) value < of 0.05 means Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is an influence on the use of mind mapping methods on students' IPS learning outcomes

PENGARUH PENGGUNAAN TEKNIK PRE-READING PLAN DALAM PEMBELAJARAN IPS TERHADAP HASIL BELAJAR SISWA KELAS VIII DI SMPN 2 SUMBER KECAMATAN SUMBER KABUPATEN CIREBON

The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) the use of the Pre-reading Plan technique in social studies learning (2) the effect of class VIII student learning outcomes at SMP Negeri 2 Sumber Cirebon (3) how much influence the use of the Pre-reading Plan technique in social studies learning had. on the learning outcomes of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumber. In this study, the population and sample were students of SMP Negeri 2 Sumber, class VIII B, amounting to 37 students and class VIII C totaling 37 students. According to the methodology, this type of research is quantitative. Data analysis using the "t" test formula for two large samples that are interconnected with each other, presenting data in the form of group data. Based on the analysis of the "t" test from the results of the study, it shows that to is equal to (3.12) is much greater than t, both at the 5% level (2.03) and 1% at (2.72), namely 2.03 <3 ,12>2.72. Thus, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that between variables X and Y there is a significant effect. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence between the Pre-reading Plan technique in social studies learning on the learning outcomes of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumber

Social work training or social work education? An approach to curriculum design

Population ageing, economic circumstances, and human behaviour are placing social welfare systems under great strain. In England extensive reform of the social work profession is taking place. Training curricula are being redesigned in the context of new standards of competence for social workers – the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF). Students must be equipped on qualifying to address an extensive range of human problems, presenting major challenges to educators. Critical theory suggests an approach to tackle one such challenge – selecting the essential content required for areas of particular practice. Teaching on social work with older people is used to illustrate this. Habermas’ theory of cognitive interests highlights the different professional roles served by the social work knowledge base - instrumental, interpretive, and emancipatory. Howe’s application of sociological theory distinguished four social work roles corresponding to these. It is suggested that curriculum design decisions must enable practitioners to operate in each. When preparing students to work with older people, educators therefore need to include interpretive and emancipatory perspectives, and not construct social work purely as an instrumental response to problems older people present. This approach provides one useful rationale for curriculum design decisions, which is applicable to other areas of practice, and to contexts outside England

Analysis of multivariate stochastic signals sampled by on-line particle analyzers: Application to the quantitative assessment of occupational exposure to NOAA in multisource industrial scenarios (MSIS)

In multisource industrial scenarios (MSIS) coexist NOAA generating activities with other productive sources of airborne particles, such as parallel processes of manufacturing or electrical and diesel machinery. A distinctive characteristic of MSIS is the spatially complex distribution of aerosol sources, as well as their potential differences in dynamics, due to the feasibility of multi-task configuration at a given time. Thus, the background signal is expected to challenge the aerosol analyzers at a probably wide range of concentrations and size distributions, depending of the multisource configuration at a given time. Monitoring and prediction by using statistical analysis of time series captured by on-line particle analyzersin industrial scenarios, have been proven to be feasible in predicting PNC evolution provided a given quality of net signals (difference between signal at source and background). However the analysis and modelling of non-consistent time series, influenced by low levels of SNR (Signal-Noise Ratio) could build a misleading basis for decision making. In this context, this work explores the use of stochastic models based on ARIMA methodology to monitor and predict exposure values (PNC). The study was carried out in a MSIS where an case study focused on the manufacture of perforated tablets of nano-TiO2 by cold pressing was performed.Research carried out by projects SCAFFOLD and EHS Advance were made possible thanks to funding from European Commission through FP7 (GA 319092) and Basque Country Government through ETORTEK Programme
