    Maximum performance of piezoelectric energy harvesters when coupled to interface circuits

    This paper presents a complete optimization of a piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting system, including a piezoelectric transducer, a power conditioning circuit with full semiconductor device models, a battery and passive components. To the authors awareness, this is the first time and all of these elements have been integrated into one optimization. The optimization is done within a framework, which models the combined mechanical and electrical elements of a complete piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting system. To realize the optimization, an optimal electrical damping is achieved using a single-supply pre-biasing circuit with a buck converter to charge the battery. The model is implemented in MATLAB and verified in SPICE. The results of the full system model are used to find the mechanical and electrical system parameters required to maximize the power output. The model, therefore, yields the upper bound of the output power and the system effectiveness of complete piezoelectric energy harvesting systems and, hence, provides both a benchmark for assessing the effectiveness of existing harvesters and a framework to design the optimized harvesters. It is also shown that the increased acceleration does not always result in increased power generation as a larger damping force is required, forcing a geometry change of the harvester to avoid exceeding the piezoelectric breakdown voltage. Similarly, increasing available volume may not result in the increased power generation because of the difficulty of resonating the beam at certain frequencies whilst utilizing the entire volume. A maximum system effectiveness of 48% is shown to be achievable at 100 Hz for a 3.38-cm3 generator

    A Hybrid Technique of Energy Harvesting from Mechanical Vibration and Ambient Illumination

    Hybrid energy harvesting is a concept applied for improving the performance of the conventional stand-alone energy harvesters. The thesis presents the analytical formulations and characterization of a hybrid energy harvester that incorporates photovoltaic, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic mechanisms. The initial voltage required for electrostatic mechanism is obtained by the photovoltaic technique. Other mechanisms are embedded into a bimorph piezoelectric cantilever beam having a tip magnet and two sets of comb electrodes on two sides of its substructure. All the segments are interconnected by an electric circuit to generate combined output when subjected to vibration and solar illumination. Results for power output have been obtained at resonance frequency using an optimum load resistance. As the power transduced by each of the mechanisms is combined, more power is generated than those obtained by stand-alone mechanisms. The synergistic feature of this research is further promoted by adding fatigue analysis using finite element method

    Power electronic interfaces for piezoelectric energy harvesters

    Motion-driven energy harvesters can replace batteries in low power wireless sensors, however selection of the optimal type of transducer for a given situation is difficult as the performance of the complete system must be taken into account in the optimisation. In this thesis, a complete piezoelectric energy harvester system model including a piezoelectric transducer, a power conditioning circuit, and a battery, is presented allowing for the first time a complete optimisation of such a system to be performed. Combined with previous work on modelling an electrostatic energy harvesting system, a comparison of the two transduction methods was performed. The results at 100 Hz indicate that for small MEMS devices at low accelerations, electrostatic harvesting systems outperform piezoelectric but the opposite is true as the size and acceleration increases. Thus the transducer type which achieves the best power density in an energy harvesting system for a given size, acceleration and operating frequency can be chosen. For resonant vibrational energy harvesting, piezoelectric transducers have received a lot of attention due to their MEMS manufacturing compatibility with research focused on the transduction method but less attention has been paid to the output power electronics. Detailed design considerations for a piezoelectric harvester interface circuit, known as single-supply pre-biasing (SSPB), are developed which experimentally demonstrate the circuit outperforming the next best known interface's theoretical limit. A new mode of operation for the SSPB circuit is developed which improves the power generation performance when the piezoelectric material properties have degraded. A solution for tracking the maximum power point as the excitation changes is also presented.Open Acces

    Review of nonlinear vibration energy harvesting: Duffing, bistability, parametric, stochastic and others

    Vibration energy harvesting typically involves a mechanical oscillatory mechanism to accumulate ambient kinetic energy, prior to the conversion to electrical energy through a transducer. The convention is to use a simple linear mass-spring-damper oscillator with its resonant frequency tuned towards that of the vibration source. In the past decade, there has been a rapid expansion in research of vibration energy harvesting into various nonlinear vibration principles such as Duffing nonlinearity, bistability, parametric oscillators, stochastic oscillators and other nonlinear mechanisms. The intended objectives for using nonlinearity include broadening of frequency bandwidth, enhancement of power amplitude and improvement in responsiveness to non-sinusoidal noisy excitations. However, nonlinear vibration energy harvesting also comes with its own challenges and some of the research pursuits have been less than fruitful. Previous reviews in the literature have either focussed on bandwidth enhancement strategies or converged on select few nonlinear mechanisms. This article reviews eight major types of nonlinear vibration energy harvesting reported over the past decade, covering underlying principles, advantages and disadvantages, and application-specific guidance for researchers and designers

    Optimisation and Management of Energy Generated by a Multifunctional MFC-Integrated Composite Chassis for Rail Vehicles

    With the advancing trend towards lighter and faster rail transport, there is an increasing interest in integrating composite and advanced multifunctional materials in order to infuse smart sensing and monitoring, energy harvesting and wireless capabilities within the otherwise purely mechanical rail structures and the infrastructure. This paper presents a holistic multiphysics numerical study, across both mechanical and electrical domains, that describes an innovative technique of harvesting energy from a piezoelectric micro fiber composites (MFC) built-in composite rail chassis structure. Representative environmental vibration data measured from a rail cabin have been critically leveraged here to help predict the actual vibratory and power output behaviour under service. Time domain mean stress distribution data from the Finite Element simulation were used to predict the raw AC voltage output of the MFCs. Conditioned power output was then calculated using circuit simulation of several state-of-the-art power conditioning circuits. A peak instantaneous rectified power of 181.9 mW was obtained when eight-stage Synchronised Switch Harvesting Capacitors (SSHC) from eight embedded MFCs were located. The results showed that the harvested energy could be sufficient to sustain a self-powered structural health monitoring system with wireless communication capabilities. This study serves as a theoretical foundation of scavenging for vibrational power from the ambient state in a rail environment as well as to pointing to design principles to develop regenerative and power neutral smart vehicles
