    Robust control has been a topic of active research in the last three decades culminating in H_2/H_\infty and \mu design methods followed by research on parametric robustness, initially motivated by Kharitonov's theorem, the extension to non-linear time delay systems, and other more recent methods. The two volumes of Recent Advances in Robust Control give a selective overview of recent theoretical developments and present selected application examples. The volumes comprise 39 contributions covering various theoretical aspects as well as different application areas. The first volume covers selected problems in the theory of robust control and its application to robotic and electromechanical systems.     Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing a vital role in sustainable transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, Battery EVs will become mainstream for passenger car transportation. Even though EVs are gaining interest in sustainable transportation, the future of EV power transmission is facing vital concerns and open research challenges. Considering the case of torque ripple mitigation and improved reliability control techniques in motors, many motor drive control algorithms fail to provide efficient control. To efficiently address this issue, control techniques such as Field Orientation Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), Model Predictive Control (MPC), Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and Intelligent Control (IC) techniques are used in the motor drive control algorithms. This literature survey exclusively compares the various advanced control techniques for conventionally used EV motors such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC), Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), and Induction Motors (IM). Furthermore, this paper discusses the EV-motors history, types of EVmotors, EV-motor drives powertrain mathematical modelling, and design procedure of EV-motors. The hardware results have also been compared with different control techniques for BLDC and SRM hub motors. Future direction towards the design of EV by critical selection of motors and their control techniques to minimize the torque ripple and other research opportunities to enhance the performance of EVs are also presented.publishedVersio

    Recent Progress in Electrical Generators for Oceanic Wave Energy Conversion

    Oceanic wave energy extraction through electrical generator is one of the most interesting topics in the field of power engineering. Almost all the existing relevant review paper focus on electrical generator with the working principle of electromagnetic induction or piezoelectric or triboelectric effect. In this paper, all the existing types (based on principle of operation) of electrical generator used for wave power harvesting are discussed. This paper not only covers recent progress in electrical power generation by electro-magnetic induction, piezoelectric generator, and electrostatic induction, but also presents critical comparative review as well where suitable use and weakness of each type of generators are discussed. Moreover, the application of advanced magnetic core, winding, and permanent magnets are discussed with extensive explanation which are not focused in the existing reviews. Various new constructional features of the electrical generators such as split translator flux switching, two-point absorber, triangular coil, dual port linear generator, piezoelectric, triboelectric nanogenerator, etc. are highlighted with principles of operation. It also includes emerging human intervened optimization method for determining optimum shape of generator and cooling system which is necessary to prevent demagnetization of the permanent magnet. Finally, the way of supply the generated electrical power form the generator to load/grid is thoroughly described in a separate section that would be obvious for successful operation. The comparison among all types of generators in terms of output voltage, current, scale of power production, power-frequency characteristics, power density, cascading, and approaches are tabulated in this paper

    The switched mode dc-dc converters are some of the simplest power electronic circuits which convert one level of electrical voltage into another level by switching action. These converters have received an increasing deal of interest in many areas. This is due to their wide applications like power supplies for personal computers, office equipments, appliance control, telecommunication equipments, DC motor drives, automotive, aircraft, etc. The analysis, control and stabilization of switching converters are the main factors that need to be considered. Many control methods are used for control of switch mode dc-dc converters and the simple and low cost controller structure is always in demand for most industrial and high performance applications. Every control method has some advantages and drawbacks due to which that particular control method consider as a suitable control method under specific conditions, compared to other control methods. The control method that gives the best performances under any conditions is always in demand.One of the key issues of feedback is to provide robustness to uncertainty . It is one of the most useful properties of feedback and is what makes it possible to design feedback systems based on simplified models. One form of uncertainty in dynamical systems is parametric uncertainty in which the parameters describing the system are unknown. The neglected mechanisms while linearizing a process are called Unmodeled dynamics. Unmodeled dynamics can be accounted for by developing a more complex model. Such models are commonly used for controller development, but substantial effort is required to develop them. An alternative is to investigate if the closed loop system is sensitive to generic forms of unmodeled dynamics .The basic idea is to describe the unmodeled dynamics by including a transfer function in the system description whose frequency response is bounded but otherwise unspecified The commonly used control methods for dc-dc converters are pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage mode control, PWM current mode control with proportional (P), proportional integral (PI), and proportional integral derivative (PID) controller and many others. In this thesis linear controllers like Youla and H∞ controllers are studied and analyzed. These conventional control methods delivered good results using the state-space averaging (SSA) technique but are unable to perform satisfactorily when implemented to the non-linear plant having switch element. Therefore, nonlinear controllers come into picture for controlling dc-dc converters. The advantages of these nonlinear controllers are their ability to react suddenly to a transient condition. The different types of nonlinear controllers are hysteresis controller, sliding mode controller, fuzzy logic sliding mode control etc

    Control Strategies of DC–DC Converter in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

    There is a significant need to research and develop a compatible controller for the DC–DC converter used in fuel cells electric vehicles (EVs). Research has shown that fuel cells (FC) EVs have the potential of providing a far more promising performance in comparison to conventional combustion engine vehicles. This study aims to present a universal sliding mode control (SMC) technique to control the DC bus voltage under varying load conditions. Additionally, this research will utilize improved DC–DC converter topologies to boost the output voltage of the FCs. A DC–DC converter with a properly incorporated control scheme can be utilized to regulate the DC bus voltage–. A conventional linear controller, like a PID controller, is not suitable to be used as a controller to regulate the output voltage in the proposed application. This is due to the nonlinearity of the converter. Furthermore, this thesis will explore the use of a secondary power source which will be utilized during the start–up and transient condition of the FCEV. However, in this instance, a simple boost converter can be used as a reference to step–up the fuel cell output voltage. In terms of application, an FCEV requires stepping –up of the voltage through the use of a high power DC–DC converter or chopper. A control scheme must be developed to adjust the DC bus or load voltage to meet the vehicle requirements as well as to improve the overall efficiency of the FCEV. A simple SMC structure can be utilized to handle these issues and stabilize the output voltage of the DC–DC converter to maintain and establish a constant DC–link voltage during the load variations. To address the aforementioned issues, this thesis presents a sliding mode control technique to control the DC bus voltage under varying load conditions using improved DC–DC converter topologies to boost and stabilize the output voltage of the FCs
