    Single Antenna Anchor-Free UWB Positioning based on Multipath Propagation

    Radio based localization and tracking usually require multiple receivers/transmitters or a known floor plan. This paper presents a method for anchor free indoor positioning based on single antenna ultra wideband (UWB) measurements. By using time of arrival information from multipath propagation components stemming from scatterers with different, but unknown, positions we estimate the movement of the receiver as well as the angle of arrival of the considered multipath components. Experiments are shown for real indoor data measured in a lecture room with promising results. Simultaneous estimation of both receiver motion, transmitter and scatterer positions is performed using an factorization based approach followed by non-linear least squares optimization. A RANSAC approach to automatic matching of data has also been implemented and tested. The resulting reconstruction is compared to ground truth motion as given by the antenna positioner. The resulting accuracy is in the order of one cm

Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades.     Wi-PoS : a low-cost, open source ultra-wideband (UWB) hardware platform with long range sub-GHz backbone

    Ultra-wideband (UWB) localization is one of the most promising approaches for indoor localization due to its accurate positioning capabilities, immunity against multipath fading, and excellent resilience against narrowband interference. However, UWB researchers are currently limited by the small amount of feasible open source hardware that is publicly available. We developed a new open source hardware platform, Wi-PoS, for precise UWB localization based on Decawave’s DW1000 UWB transceiver with several unique features: support of both long-range sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz back-end communication between nodes, flexible interfacing with external UWB antennas, and an easy implementation of the MAC layer with the Time-Annotated Instruction Set Computer (TAISC) framework. Both hardware and software are open source and all parameters of the UWB ranging can be adjusted, calibrated, and analyzed. This paper explains the main specifications of the hardware platform, illustrates design decisions, and evaluates the performance of the board in terms of range, accuracy, and energy consumption. The accuracy of the ranging system was below 10 cm in an indoor lab environment at distances up to 5 m, and accuracy smaller than 5 cm was obtained at 50 and 75 m in an outdoor environment. A theoretical model was derived for predicting the path loss and the influence of the most important ground reflection. At the same time, the average energy consumption of the hardware was very low with only 81 mA for a tag node and 63 mA for the active anchor nodes, permitting the system to run for several days on a mobile battery pack and allowing easy and fast deployment on sites without an accessible power supply or backbone network.     Massive MIMO-based Localization and Mapping Exploiting Phase Information of Multipath Components

    In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs) using a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array at the base station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy even with limited bandwidth. The specular MPC parameters along with the parameters of the noise and the dense multipath component (DMC) are tracked using an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which enables to preserve the distance-related phase changes of the MPC complex amplitudes. The DMC comprises all non-resolvable MPCs, which occur due to finite measurement aperture. The estimation of the DMC parameters enhances the estimation quality of the specular MPCs and therefore also the quality of localization and mapping. The estimated MPC propagation distances are subsequently used as input to a distance-based localization and mapping algorithm. This algorithm does not need prior knowledge about the surrounding environment and base station position. The performance is demonstrated with real radio-channel measurements using an antenna array with 128 ports at the base station side and a standard cellular signal bandwidth of 40 MHz. The results show that high accuracy localization is possible even with such a low bandwidth.Comment: 14 pages (two columns), 13 figures.     Amplitude Modeling of Specular Multipath Components for Robust Indoor Localization

    Ultra-Wide Bandwidth (UWB) and mm-wave radio systems can resolve specular multipath components (SMCs) from estimated channel impulse response measurements. A geometric model can describe the delays, angles-of-arrival, and angles-of-departure of these SMCs, allowing for a prediction of these channel features. For the modeling of the amplitudes of the SMCs, a data-driven approach has been proposed recently, using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to map and predict the SMC amplitudes. In this paper, the applicability of the proposed multipath-resolved, GPR-based channel model is analyzed by studying features of the propagation channel from a set of channel measurements. The features analyzed include the energy capture of the modeled SMCs, the number of resolvable SMCs, and the ranging information that could be extracted from the SMCs. The second contribution of the paper concerns the potential applicability of the channel model for a multipath-resolved, single-anchor positioning system. The predicted channel knowledge is used to evaluate the measurement likelihood function at candidate positions throughout the environment. It is shown that the environmental awareness created by the multipath-resolved, GPR-based channel model yields higher robustness against position estimation outliers

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become one of the most important topics in wireless communication during the last decade. In a wireless sensor system, sensors are spread over a region to build a sensor network and the sensors in a region co-operate to each other to sense, process, filter and routing. Sensor Positioning is a fundamental and crucial issue for sensor network operation and management. WSNs have so many applications in different areas such as health-care, monitoring and control, rescuing and military; they all depend on nodes being able to accurately determine their locations. This master’s thesis is focused on distance-based sensor node localization techniques; Received signal strength indicator, ultrasound and ultra-wideband. Characteristics and factors which affect these distance estimation techniques are analyzed theoretically and through simulation the quality of these techniques are compared in different scenarios. MDS, a centralized algorithm is used for solving the coordinates. It is a set of data analysis techniques that display the structure of distance-like data as a geometrical picture. Centralized and distributed implementations of MDS are also discussed. All simulations and computations in this thesis are done in Matlab. Virtual WSN is simulated on Sensorviz.
