    Robust pedestrian detection and tracking in crowded scenes

    In this paper, a robust computer vision approach to detecting and tracking pedestrians in unconstrained crowded scenes is presented. Pedestrian detection is performed via a 3D clustering process within a region-growing framework. The clustering process avoids using hard thresholds by using bio-metrically inspired constraints and a number of plan view statistics. Pedestrian tracking is achieved by formulating the track matching process as a weighted bipartite graph and using a Weighted Maximum Cardinality Matching scheme. The approach is evaluated using both indoor and outdoor sequences, captured using a variety of different camera placements and orientations, that feature significant challenges in terms of the number of pedestrians present, their interactions and scene lighting conditions. The evaluation is performed against a manually generated groundtruth for all sequences. Results point to the extremely accurate performance of the proposed approach in all cases

    Tracking people in crowds by a part matching approach

    The major difficulty in human tracking is the problem raised by challenging occlusions where the target person is repeatedly and extensively occluded by either the background or another moving object. These types of occlusions may cause significant changes in the person's shape, appearance or motion, thus making the data association problem extremely difficult to solve. Unlike most of the existing methods for human tracking that handle occlusions by data association of the complete human body, in this paper we propose a method that tracks people under challenging spatial occlusions based on body part tracking. The human model we propose consists of five body parts with six degrees of freedom and each part is represented by a rich set of features. The tracking is solved using a layered data association approach, direct comparison between features (feature layer) and subsequently matching between parts of the same bodies (part layer) lead to a final decision for the global match (global layer). Experimental results have confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2008 IEEE

    Computer analysis of objects’ movement in image sequences: methods and applications

    Computer analysis of objects’ movement in image sequences is a very complex problem, considering that it usually involves tasks for automatic detection, matching, tracking, motion analysis and deformation estimation. In spite of its complexity, this computational analysis has a wide range of important applications; for instance, in surveillance systems, clinical analysis of human gait, objects recognition, pose estimation and deformation analysis. Due to the extent of the purposes, several difficulties arise, such as the simultaneous tracking of manifold objects, their possible temporary occlusion or definitive disappearance from the image scene, changes of the viewpoints considered in images acquisition or of the illumination conditions, or even nonrigid deformations that objects may suffer in image sequences. In this paper, we present an overview of several methods that may be considered to analyze objects’ movement; namely, for their segmentation, tracking and matching in images, and for estimation of the deformation involved between images.This paper was partially done in the scope of project “Segmentation, Tracking and Motion Analysis of Deformable (2D/3D) Objects using Physical Principles”, with reference POSC/EEA-SRI/55386/2004, financially supported by FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia from Portugal.     Feature-based tracking of multiple people for intelligent video surveillance.

    Intelligent video surveillance is the process of performing surveillance task automatically by a computer vision system. It involves detecting and tracking people in the video sequence and understanding their behavior. This thesis addresses the problem of detecting and tracking multiple moving people with unknown background. We have proposed a feature-based framework for tracking, which requires feature extraction and feature matching. We have considered color, size, blob bounding box and motion information as features of people. In our feature-based tracking system, we have proposed to use Pearson correlation coefficient for matching feature-vector with temporal templates. The occlusion problem has been solved by histogram backprojection. Our tracking system is fast and free from assumptions about human structure. We have implemented our tracking system using Visual C++ and OpenCV and tested on real-world images and videos. Experimental results suggest that our tracking system achieved good accuracy and can process videos in 10-15 fps.Dept. of Computer Science.
