Asynchronous Logic Circuits and Sheaf Obstructions
AbstractThis article exhibits a particular encoding of logic circuits into a sheaf formalism. The central result of this article is that there exists strictly more information available to a circuit designer in this setting than exists in static truth tables, but less than exists in event-level simulation. This information is related to the timing behavior of the logic circuits, and thereby provides a “bridge” between static logic analysis and detailed simulation
Lazy transition systems: application to timing optimization of asynchronous circuits
The paper introduces Lazy Transitions Systems (LzTSs). The notion of laziness explicitly distinguishes between the enabling and the firing of an event in a transition system. LzTSs can be effectively used to model the behavior of asynchronous circuits in which relative timing assumptions can be made on the occurrence of events. These assumptions can be derived from the information known a priori about the delay of the environment and the timing characteristics of the gates that will implement the circuit. The paper presents necessary conditions to synthesize circuits with a correct behavior under the given timing assumptions. Preliminary results show that significant area and performance improvements can be obtained by exploiting the extra "don't care" space implicitly provided by the laziness of the events.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Hazards, Critical Races, and Metastability
The various modes of failure of asynchronous sequential logic circuits due to timing problems are considered. These are hazards, critical races and metastable states. It is shown that there is a mechanism common to all forms of hazards and to metastable states. A similar mechanism, with added complications, is shown to characterize critical races. Means for defeating various types of hazards and critical races through the use of one sided delay constraints are introduced. A method is described for determining from a flow table situations in which metastable states may be entered. A circuit technique for defeating metastability problems in self timed systems is presented. It is shown that the use of simulation for verifying the correctness of a circuit with given bounds on the branch delays cannot be relied upon to expose all timing problems. An example is presented that refutes the conjecture that replacing pure delays with inertial delays can only eliminate glitches. Design of Energy-Efficient A/D Converters with Partial Embedded Equalization for High-Speed Wireline Receiver Applications
As the data rates of wireline communication links increases, channel impairments such as skin effect, dielectric loss, fiber dispersion, reflections and cross-talk become more pronounced. This warrants more interest in analog-to-digital converter (ADC)-based serial link receivers, as they allow for more complex and flexible back-end digital signal processing (DSP) relative to binary or mixed-signal receivers. Utilizing this back-end DSP allows for complex digital equalization and more bandwidth-efficient modulation schemes, while also displaying reduced process/voltage/temperature (PVT) sensitivity. Furthermore, these architectures offer straightforward design translation and can directly leverage the area and power scaling offered by new CMOS technology nodes. However, the power consumption of the ADC front-end and subsequent digital signal processing is a major issue. Embedding partial equalization inside the front-end ADC can potentially result in lowering the complexity of back-end DSP and/or decreasing the ADC resolution requirement, which results in a more energy-effcient receiver. This dissertation presents efficient implementations for multi-GS/s time-interleaved ADCs with partial embedded equalization. First prototype details a 6b 1.6GS/s ADC with a novel embedded redundant-cycle 1-tap DFE structure in 90nm CMOS. The other two prototypes explain more complex 6b 10GS/s ADCs with efficiently embedded feed-forward equalization (FFE) and decision feedback equalization (DFE) in 65nm CMOS. Leveraging a time-interleaved successive approximation ADC architecture, new structures for embedded DFE and FFE are proposed with low power/area overhead. Measurement results over FR4 channels verify the effectiveness of proposed embedded equalization schemes. The comparison of fabricated prototypes against state-of-the-art general-purpose ADCs at similar speed/resolution range shows comparable performances, while the proposed architectures include embedded equalization as well
Fast Hardware Implementations of Static P Systems
In this article we present a simulator of non-deterministic static P systems
using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. Its major feature
is a high performance, achieving a constant processing time for each transition. Our
approach is based on representing all possible applications as words of some regular
context-free language. Then, using formal power series it is possible to obtain the
number of possibilities and select one of them following a uniform distribution, in
a fair and non-deterministic way. According to these ideas, we yield an implementation
whose results show an important speed-up, with a strong independence from

Synchronizer-Free Digital Link Controller
This work presents a producer-consumer link between two independent clock
domains. The link allows for metastability-free, low-latency, high-throughput
communication by slight adjustments to the clock frequencies of the producer
and consumer domains steered by a controller circuit. Any such controller
cannot deterministically avoid, detect, nor resolve metastability. Typically,
this is addressed by synchronizers, incurring a larger dead time in the control
loop. We follow the approach of Friedrichs et al. (TC 2018) who proposed
metastability-containing circuits. The result is a simple control circuit that
may become metastable, yet deterministically avoids buffer underrun or
overflow. More specifically, the controller output may become metastable, but
this may only affect oscillator speeds within specific bounds. In contrast,
communication is guaranteed to remain metastability-free. We formally prove
correctness of the producer-consumer link and a possible implementation that
has only small overhead. With SPICE simulations of the proposed implementation
we further substantiate our claims. The simulation uses 65nm process running at

Modern deeply scaled semiconductor processes make the design of voltage-domain circuits increasingly challenging. On the contrary, the area and power consumption of digital circuits are improving with every new process node. Consequently, digital solutions are designed in place of their purely analog counterparts in applications such as analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion. Time-based analog-to-digital converters (ADC) employ digital-intensive architectures by processing analog quantities in time-domain. The quantization step of the time-based A/D-conversion is carried out by a time-to-digital converter (TDC).
A free-running ring oscillator -based TDC design is presented for use in wideband time-based ADCs. The proposed architecture aims to maximize time resolution and full-scale range, and to achieve error resilient conversion performance with minimized power and area consumptions. The time resolution is maximized by employing a high-frequency multipath ring oscillator, and the full-scale range is extended using a high-speed gray counter. The error resilience is achieved by custom sense-amplifier -based sampling flip-flops, gray coded counter and a digital error correction algorithm for counter sampling error correction. The implemented design achieves up to 9-bit effective resolution at 250 MS/s with 4.3 milliwatt power consumption.Modernien puolijohdeteknologioiden skaalautumisen seurauksena jännitetason piirien suunnittelu tulee entistä haasteellisemmaksi. Toisaalta digitaalisten piirirakenteiden pinta-ala sekä tehonkulutus pienenevät prosessikehityksen myötä. Tästä syystä digitaalisia ratkaisuja suunnitellaan vastaavien puhtaasti analogisien rakenteiden tilalle. Analogia-digitaalimuunnos (A/D-muunnos) voidaan toteuttaa jännitetason sijaan aikatasossa käyttämällä aikapohjaisia A/D-muuntimia, jotka ovat rakenteeltaan pääosin digitaalisia. Kvantisointivaihe aikapohjaisessa A/D-muuntimessa toteutetaan aika-digitaalimuuntimella.
Työ esittelee vapaasti oskilloivaan silmukkaoskillaattoriin perustuvan aika-digitaalimuuntimen, joka on suunniteltu käytettäväksi laajakaistaisessa aikapohjaisessa A/D-muuntimessa. Esitelty rakenne pyrkii maksimoimaan muuntimen aikaresoluution sekä muunnosalueen, sekä saavuttamaan virhesietoisen muunnostoiminnan minimoidulla tehon sekä pinta-alan kulutuksella. Aikaresoluutio on maksimoitu hyödyntämällä suuritaajuista monipolkuista silmukkaoskillaattoria, ja muunnosalue on maksimoitu nopealla Gray-koodi -laskuripiirillä. Muunnosprosessin virhesietoisuus on saavutettu toteuttamalla näytteistys herkillä kiikkuelementeillä, hyödyntämällä Gray-koodattua laskuria, sekä jälkiprosessoimalla laskurin näytteistetyt arvot virheenkorjausalgoritmilla. Esitelty muunnintoteutus saavuttaa 9 bitin efektiivisen resoluution 250 MS/s näytetaajuudella ja 4.3 milliwatin tehonkulutuksella
Petri net based development of globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous distributed embedded systems

Synchronous (GALS) Distributed Embedded Systems (DESs) is proposed. This approach
relies on the GALS-DESs specification through (low- or high-level) Petri net classes, which
ensure that the created models are GALS, locally deterministic, distributable, networkindependent,
and platform-independent and support their simulation, verification, and
implementation (using simulation, model-checking, and code generation tools). The use
of network- and platform-independent models enable the use of heterogeneous communication
networks to support the distributed components interaction and enable the use
of heterogeneous platforms to support the components and the communication nodes
implementation. To enable the proposed MBDA, Petri nets are extended with a set of the
concepts, most notably time-domains and asynchronous-channels. Algorithms to support
the verification of GALS-DES models and their decomposition into implementable
sub-models are also proposed. A tool chain framework (IOPT-tools) was extended with
