    A conceptual method for data integration in business analytics

    Viele Unternehmen funktionieren derzeit in einem schnellen, dynamischen und vor allem unbeständigen Umfeld und wettbewerbsintensiven Markt. Daraus folgt, dass schnelle und faktenbasierende Entscheidungen ein wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor sein können. Basis für solche Entscheidungen sind oft Informationen aus Business Intelligence und Business Analytics. Eine der Herausforderungen bei der Schaffung von hochqualitativer Information für Geschäftsentscheidungen ist die Konsolidierung der Daten, die häufig aus mehrfachen heterogenen Systemen innerhalb eines Unternehmens oder in ein oder mehreren Standorten verteilt sind. ETL-Prozesse (Extraction, Transforming and Loading) sind häufig im Einsatz, um heterogene Daten aus einem oder mehreren Datenquellen in einem Zielsystem zusammenzuführen mit dem Ziel Data Marts oder Date Warehouse zu erstellen. Aufgrund mangelnder allgemeiner Methoden oder Ansätze, um systematisch solche ETL-Prozesse zu bewältigen, und Aufgrund der hohen Komplexität der Integration von Daten aus multiplen Quellen in einer allgemeinen, vereinheitlichten Darstellung, ist es sowohl für Fachleute als auch für die wenige erfahrene Anwender schwierig, Daten erfolgreich zu konsolidieren. Derzeit wird der analytische Prozess oft ohne vordefiniertes Rahmenwerk durchgeführt und basiert eher auf informelles Wissen als auf eine wissenschaftliche Methodik. Das größte Problem mit kommerzieller Software, die den Datenintegrationsprozess inklusive Visualisierung, Wiederverwendung von analytischen Sequenzen und automatischer Übersetzung der visuellen Beschreibung in einem ausführbaren Code unterstützt, ist, dass Metadaten für die Datenintegration generell nur syntaktisches Wissen darstellt. Semantische Informationen über die Datenstruktur sind typsicherweise nur in rudimentärer Form vorhanden und das obwohl sie eine signifikante Rolle bei der Definition des analytischen Modells und der Evaluierung des Ergebnisse spielen. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat Grossmann das “Conceptual Approach for Data Integration for Business Analytics” formuliert. Es zielt darauf hin, die Komplexität der analytischen Prozesse zu reduzieren und Fachkräfte in ihrer Arbeit zu unterstützen, um somit auch den Prozess für weniger erfahrene Anwender in unterschiedlichen Domänen zugänglich zu machen. Das Konzept ist detailliertes Wissen über Daten in Business Analytics, speziell Information über Semantik, zu berücksichtigen. Der Fokus liegt auf die Einbeziehung der strukturierten Beschreibung der Transformationsprozesse im Business Analytics, wo Informationen über Abhängigkeiten und Nebeneffekte von Algorithmen auch inkludiert sind. Darüber hinaus bezieht dieser Ansatz das Meta-Modell Konzept mit ein: es präsentiert ein Rahmenwerk mit Modellierungskonzepte für Datenintegration für Business Analytics. Basierend auf Grossmans Ansatz ist das Ziel dieser Masterarbeit die Entwicklung eines Meta-Model Prototyps, der die Datenintegration für Business Analytics unterstütz. Der Fokus liegt auf dem intellektuellen Prozess der Umwandlung einer theoretischen Methode in einem konzeptuellen Model, das auf ein Rahmenwerk von Modellierungsmethoden angewendet werden kann und welches zu den spezifischen Konzepten für eine bestimmte angewandte Meta-Model Plattform passt. Das Ergebnis ist ein Prototyp, der auf einer generischen konzeptuellen Methode basiert, welche unabhängig von der Ausführbarkeit einer Plattform ist. Darüber hinaus gibt es keine vordefinierte Granularitätsebene und die Modellobjekte sind für die unterschiedlichen Phasen der Datenintegration Prozess wiederverwendbar. Der Prototyp wurde auf der Open Model Plattform eingesetzt. Die Open Model Plattform ist eine Initiative der Universität Wien mit dem Ziel die Verwendung von Modellierungsmethoden zu erweitern und diese durch das Rahmenwerk, welches alle mögliche Modellierungsaktivitäten beinhaltet, für Geschäftsdomäne zur Verfügung zu stellen und nützlich zu machen, um die Zugänglichkeit bei dein Anwendern zu steigern.Today many organizations are operating in dynamic and rapid changing environment and highly competitive markets. Consequently fast and accurate fact-based decisions can be an important success factor. The basis for such decisions is usually business information as a result of business intelligence and business analytics in the corporate associations. One of the challenges of creating high-quality information for business decision is to consolidate the collected data that is spread in multiple heterogeneous systems throughout the organization in one or many different locations. Typically ETL-processes (Extraction, Transforming and Loading) are used to merge heterogeneous data from one or more data sources into a target system to form data repositories, data marts, or data warehouses. Due to the lack of a common methods or approaches to systematically manage such ETL processes and the high complexity of the task of integrating data from multiple sources to one common and unified view, it is difficult for both professionals and less experienced users to successfully consolidate data. Currently the analysis process is often performed without any predefined framework and is rather based on informal basis than a scientific methodology. Hence, for commercial tools that are supporting the data integration process including visualization of the integration, the reuse of analyses sequences and the automatic translation of the visual description to executable code, the major problem is that metadata used for data integration in general is only employed for representation of syntactic knowledge. Semantic information about the data structure is typically only available in a rudimentary form though it plays a significant role in defining the analysis model and the evaluation of the results. With this background Grossmann developed a “Conceptual Approach for Data Integration for Business Analytics”. It aims to support professionals by making business analytics easier and consequently more applicable to less experienced user in different domains. The idea is to incorporate detailed knowledge about the data in business analytics, especially information about semantics. It focuses on the inclusion of a more structured description of the transformation process in business analytics in which information about dependencies and side effects of the algorithms are included. Furthermore the approach incorporates the concept of meta-modelling; it presents a framework including the modelling concepts for data integration for business analytics. The idea of the thesis at hand is to develop a meta-model prototype that supports Data Integration for Business Analytics based on Grossman’s approach. The paper focuses on the intellectual process of transforming the theoretical method into a conceptual model which can be applied to the framework of a modelling methods and which fits to the specific concepts of a meta-model platform used. The result is a prototype based on a generic conceptual method which is execution platform independent, there are no pre-defined granularity levels and the objects of the model are re-usable for the different phases of the data integration process. The prototype is deployed on the Open Model Platform, an initiative started at the University of Vienna that aims to extend the usage of modelling methods and models and to make it more accessible to users by offering a framework including all kinds of modelling activities useful for business applications

    A Development Method for the Conceptual Design of Multi-View Modeling Tools with an Emphasis on Consistency Requirements

    The main objective of this thesis is to bridge the gap between modeling method experts on the one side and tool developers on the other. More precisely, the focus is on the specification of requirements for multi-view modeling tools. In this regard, the thesis introduces a methodological approach that supports the specification of conceptual designs for multi-view modeling tools in a stepwise manner: the MuVieMoT approach. MuVieMoT utilizes generic multi-view modeling concepts and the model-driven engineering paradigm to establish an overarching specification of multi-view modeling tools with an emphasis on consistency requirements. The approach builds on and extends the theoretical foundation of metamodeling and multi-view modeling: generic multi-view modeling concepts, integrated multi-view modeling approaches, and possibilities for formalized modeling method specifications. Applicability and utility of MuVieMoT are evaluated using an illustrative scenario, therefore specifying a conceptual design for a multi-view modeling tool for the Semantic Object Model enterprise modeling method. The thesis moreover introduces the MuVieMoT modeling environment, enabling the efficient application of the approach as well as the model-driven development of initial multi-view modeling tools based on the conceptual models created with MuVieMoT. Consequently, the approach fosters an intersubjective and unambiguous understanding of the tool requirements between method experts and tool developers

    Organizacijsko modeliranje višeagentnih sustava velikih razmjera s primjenom na računalne igre

    The most popular and frequent methods of conducting a system of agents, of smallor large-scale, are those based on swarm intelligence, and organisational models. Organisational models for multi-agent systems are being developed alongside their role in the modern world. Technological improvements lead to creation of systems comprising thousands, or millions, of agents – large-scale multiagent system (LSMAS). Numerous LSMAS application domains (Internet of Everything (IoE), massively multi-player online games (MMOGs), smart cities, etc.) make LSMAS a genuinely useful concept in the modern era. Recent studies argue higher efficiency of LSMAS with imposed organisation, as opposed to systems with emerging intelligence. This makes organisational modelling of LSMAS a particularly interesting research subject. Organisational model based on ontology comprising LSMAS-related organisational concepts, built conforming to modern organisational perspectives for LSMAS, is a step towards easier LSMAS modelling. The ontology is basis for an organisational metamodel for LSMAS, which, coupled with graph grammars and logic, is suitable for modelling organisational dynamics, especially in the domain of massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs).Najpoznatiji i najučestaliji oblici uređenja sustava agenata, velikog ili malog razmjera, su oni koji se temelje na inteligenciji roja i oni koji svoje osnove vuku iz organizacijskih modela. Organizacijski modeli višeagentnih sustava razvijaju se usporedno s ulogom takvih sustava u modernom svijetu. Razvojem tehnologije stvaraju se sustavi koji broje tisuće ili milijuneagenata–višeagentnisustavivelikihrazmjera(VASVR).Mnogobrojneaplikacijske domene za VASVR (Internet svega, mrežne računalne igre namijenjene većem broju igrača (MMORPG), pametni gradovi i sl.) čine VASVR realno potrebnim konceptom u moderno doba. Recentna istraživanja ukazuju na veću učinkovitost VASVR uređenih temeljem organizacijske teorije, od onih koji prate inteligencija roja, te je stoga organizacijsko modeliranje VASVR iznimno interesantno podučje za istraživanje. Organizacijski model temeljen na ontologiji organizacijskih koncepata i modernim načelima organizacije VASVR korak je prema lakšem oblikovanju VASVR.     An evaluation of the challenges of Multilingualism in Data Warehouse development

    In this paper we discuss Business Intelligence and define what is meant by support for Multilingualism in a Business Intelligence reporting context. We identify support for Multilingualism as a challenging issue which has implications for data warehouse design and reporting performance. Data warehouses are a core component of most Business Intelligence systems and the star schema is the approach most widely used to develop data warehouses and dimensional Data Marts. We discuss the way in which Multilingualism can be supported in the Star Schema and identify that current approaches have serious limitations which include data redundancy and data manipulation, performance and maintenance issues. We propose a new approach to enable the optimal application of multilingualism in Business Intelligence. The proposed approach was found to produce satisfactory results when used in a proof-of-concept environment. Future work will include testing the approach in an enterprise environmen

    Pristup specifikaciji i generisanju proizvodnih procesa zasnovan na inženjerstvu vođenom modelima

    In this thesis, we present an approach to the production process specification and generation based on the model-driven paradigm, with the goal to increase the flexibility of factories and respond to the challenges that emerged in the era of Industry 4.0 more efficiently. To formally specify production processes and their variations in the Industry 4.0 environment, we created a novel domain-specific modeling language, whose models are machine-readable. The created language can be used to model production processes that can be independent of any production system, enabling process models to be used in different production systems, and process models used for the specific production system. To automatically transform production process models dependent on the specific production system into instructions that are to be executed by production system resources, we created an instruction generator. Also, we created generators for different manufacturing documentation, which automatically transform production process models into manufacturing documents of different types. The proposed approach, domain-specific modeling language, and software solution contribute to introducing factories into the digital transformation process. As factories must rapidly adapt to new products and their variations in the era of Industry 4.0, production must be dynamically led and instructions must be automatically sent to factory resources, depending on products that are to be created on the shop floor. The proposed approach contributes to the creation of such a dynamic environment in contemporary factories, as it allows to automatically generate instructions from process models and send them to resources for execution. Additionally, as there are numerous different products and their variations, keeping the required manufacturing documentation up to date becomes challenging, which can be done automatically by using the proposed approach and thus significantly lower process designers' time.У овој дисертацији представљен је приступ спецификацији и генерисању производних процеса заснован на инжењерству вођеном моделима, у циљу повећања флексибилности постројења у фабрикама и ефикаснијег разрешавања изазова који се појављују у ери Индустрије 4.0. За потребе формалне спецификације производних процеса и њихових варијација у амбијенту Индустрије 4.0, креиран је нови наменски језик, чије моделе рачунар може да обради на аутоматизован начин. Креирани језик има могућност моделовања производних процеса који могу бити независни од производних система и тиме употребљени у различитим постројењима или фабрикама, али и производних процеса који су специфични за одређени систем. Како би моделе производних процеса зависних од конкретног производног система било могуће на аутоматизован начин трансформисати у инструкције које ресурси производног система извршавају, креиран је генератор инструкција. Такође су креирани и генератори техничке документације, који на аутоматизован начин трансформишу моделе производних процеса у документе различитих типова. Употребом предложеног приступа, наменског језика и софтверског решења доприноси се увођењу фабрика у процес дигиталне трансформације. Како фабрике у ери Индустрије 4.0 морају брзо да се прилагоде новим производима и њиховим варијацијама, неопходно је динамички водити производњу и на аутоматизован начин слати инструкције ресурсима у фабрици, у зависности од производа који се креирају у конкретном постројењу. Тиме што је у предложеном приступу могуће из модела процеса аутоматизовано генерисати инструкције и послати их ресурсима, доприноси се креирању једног динамичког окружења у савременим фабрикама. Додатно, услед великог броја различитих производа и њихових варијација, постаје изазовно одржавати неопходну техничку документацију, што је у предложеном приступу могуће урадити на аутоматизован начин и тиме значајно уштедети време пројектаната процеса.U ovoj disertaciji predstavljen je pristup specifikaciji i generisanju proizvodnih procesa zasnovan na inženjerstvu vođenom modelima, u cilju povećanja fleksibilnosti postrojenja u fabrikama i efikasnijeg razrešavanja izazova koji se pojavljuju u eri Industrije 4.0. Za potrebe formalne specifikacije proizvodnih procesa i njihovih varijacija u ambijentu Industrije 4.0, kreiran je novi namenski jezik, čije modele računar može da obradi na automatizovan način. Kreirani jezik ima mogućnost modelovanja proizvodnih procesa koji mogu biti nezavisni od proizvodnih sistema i time upotrebljeni u različitim postrojenjima ili fabrikama, ali i proizvodnih procesa koji su specifični za određeni sistem. Kako bi modele proizvodnih procesa zavisnih od konkretnog proizvodnog sistema bilo moguće na automatizovan način transformisati u instrukcije koje resursi proizvodnog sistema izvršavaju, kreiran je generator instrukcija. Takođe su kreirani i generatori tehničke dokumentacije, koji na automatizovan način transformišu modele proizvodnih procesa u dokumente različitih tipova. Upotrebom predloženog pristupa, namenskog jezika i softverskog rešenja doprinosi se uvođenju fabrika u proces digitalne transformacije. Kako fabrike u eri Industrije 4.0 moraju brzo da se prilagode novim proizvodima i njihovim varijacijama, neophodno je dinamički voditi proizvodnju i na automatizovan način slati instrukcije resursima u fabrici, u zavisnosti od proizvoda koji se kreiraju u konkretnom postrojenju. Time što je u predloženom pristupu moguće iz modela procesa automatizovano generisati instrukcije i poslati ih resursima, doprinosi se kreiranju jednog dinamičkog okruženja u savremenim fabrikama. Dodatno, usled velikog broja različitih proizvoda i njihovih varijacija, postaje izazovno održavati neophodnu tehničku dokumentaciju, što je u predloženom pristupu moguće uraditi na automatizovan način i time značajno uštedeti vreme projektanata procesa

    ArchiSmartCity: Modelling the Alignment of Services and Information in Smart City Architectures

    Digital transformation in the public sector describes the shift from traditional creation and delivery of services, into the massive use of digital technologies to enhance public services. The digitalisation of public administration presents significant challenges for many municipalities in the social, economic, environmental, and sustainable dimensions. Cities take advantage of the rapid advances in information and communication technologies capabilities to make the provision of city services (e.g., health service, transport service, air-quality service, education service) more efficient. These modern urban environments are commonly referred to as Smart Cities, where advanced and innovative services are offered to improve the overall quality of life for the citizens. Smart Cities are complex systems that involve diverse stakeholders and concerns, use heterogeneous information systems and technologies, and aim to fulfill multiple and conflicting goals. Such complexity challenges the provision of services that may fail to achieve city goals and meet the needs of citizens due to the lack of alignment between city services and the information systems that support them. Evidence of this is the existence of city services and systems that fail to address the real needs of stakeholders, and are not perceived as valuable by them because they do not interoperate, leading to duplication of work and incompatible solutions. Enterprise Architecture (EA) is an established planning and governance approach to manage the complexity of corporate systems. EA presents a holistic view of organisational business strategies and IT initiatives to achieve organisational goals by adopting a comprehensive perspective on the overall architecture. Smart Cities can be seen as urban enterprises with more complex and multi-dimensional systems that require integration among smarter services from different domains (e.g., mobility, energy, public safety, emergency, education, culture, etc.) to respond to diverse interests and objectives from a range of stakeholders. Existing research on EAs for Smart Cities uses the concept of layers and views to describe architecture content and guide its implementation. However, these approaches do not identify the concepts to describe and model the relationships between the service and information layers which are essential to address the strategic alignment. Furthermore, there is an absence of such concepts in languages and metamodels for Enterprise Modelling. These architectures and metamodels mostly emphasize technical aspects that constitute Smart Cities and they rarely focus on city services and their strategic aspects towards delivering the cities vision and objectives. This research introduces ArchiSmartCity, a metamodel that addresses the alignment between city services and information systems according to Smart City strategies to assist in the digitalisation of public city services. In this thesis, design principles and design requirements are defined and instantiated by designing the ArchiSmartCity metamodel that explicitly expresses this alignment, following a design science research approach. Further, ArchiSmartCity is developed and implemented as a coherent extension of an EA metamodel to describe an expository instantiation and its application. ArchiSmartCity is evaluated in an iterative manner within multiple-case studies, by creating real-world services models that are validated by Smart City domain experts. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates and evaluates ArchiSmartCity by developing a computer-based solution for semantic alignment analysis. Ex-post evaluation results demonstrate the quality and practical relevance of the developed metamodel extension for cities and municipalities. This study contributes to the current understanding of how city strategies should be aligned with Smart City implementations by providing a prescriptive view and metamodel to guide coherent and unambiguous architecture design in the Smart Cities field
