    Self-generated Self-similar Traffic

    Self-similarity in the network traffic has been studied from several aspects: both at the user side and at the network side there are many sources of the long range dependence. Recently some dynamical origins are also identified: the TCP adaptive congestion avoidance algorithm itself can produce chaotic and long range dependent throughput behavior, if the loss rate is very high. In this paper we show that there is a close connection between the static and dynamic origins of self-similarity: parallel TCPs can generate the self-similarity themselves, they can introduce heavily fluctuations into the background traffic and produce high effective loss rate causing a long range dependent TCP flow, however, the dropped packet ratio is low.Comment: 8 pages, 12 Postscript figures, accepted in Nonlinear Phenomena in Complex System

    End-to-End Simulation of 5G mmWave Networks

    Due to its potential for multi-gigabit and low latency wireless links, millimeter wave (mmWave) technology is expected to play a central role in 5th generation cellular systems. While there has been considerable progress in understanding the mmWave physical layer, innovations will be required at all layers of the protocol stack, in both the access and the core network. Discrete-event network simulation is essential for end-to-end, cross-layer research and development. This paper provides a tutorial on a recently developed full-stack mmWave module integrated into the widely used open-source ns--3 simulator. The module includes a number of detailed statistical channel models as well as the ability to incorporate real measurements or ray-tracing data. The Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers are modular and highly customizable, making it easy to integrate algorithms or compare Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) numerologies, for example. The module is interfaced with the core network of the ns--3 Long Term Evolution (LTE) module for full-stack simulations of end-to-end connectivity, and advanced architectural features, such as dual-connectivity, are also available. To facilitate the understanding of the module, and verify its correct functioning, we provide several examples that show the performance of the custom mmWave stack as well as custom congestion control algorithms designed specifically for efficient utilization of the mmWave channel.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, submitted to IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (revised Jan. 2018

    Evaluation Study for Delay and Link Utilization with the New-Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease Congestion Avoidance and Control Algorithm

    As the Internet becomes increasingly heterogeneous, the issue of congestion avoidance and control becomes ever more important. And the queue length, end-to-end delays and link utilization is some of the important things in term of congestion avoidance and control mechanisms. In this work we continue to study the performances of the New-AIMD (Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease) mechanism as one of the core protocols for TCP congestion avoidance and control algorithm, we want to evaluate the effect of using the AIMD algorithm after developing it to find a new approach, as we called it the New-AIMD algorithm to measure the Queue length, delay and bottleneck link utilization, and use the NCTUns simulator to get the results after make the modification for the mechanism. And we will use the Droptail mechanism as the active queue management mechanism (AQM) in the bottleneck router. After implementation of our new approach with different number of flows, we expect the delay will less when we measure the delay dependent on the throughput for all the system, and also we expect to get end-to-end delay less. And we will measure the second type of delay a (queuing delay), as we shown in the figure 1 bellow. Also we will measure the bottleneck link utilization, and we expect to get high utilization for bottleneck link with using this mechanism, and avoid the collisions in the link

    Analysis and operational challenges of dynamic ride sharing demand responsive transportation models

    There is a wide body of evidence that suggests sustainable mobility is not only a technological question, but that automotive technology will be a part of the solution in becoming a necessary albeit insufficient condition. Sufficiency is emerging as a paradigm shift from car ownership to vehicle usage, which is a consequence of socio-economic changes. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) now make it possible for a user to access a mobility service to go anywhere at any time. Among the many emerging mobility services, Multiple Passenger Ridesharing and its variants look the most promising. However, challenges arise in implementing these systems while accounting specifically for time dependencies and time windows that reflect users’ needs, specifically in terms of real-time fleet dispatching and dynamic route calculation. On the other hand, we must consider the feasibility and impact analysis of the many factors influencing the behavior of the system – as, for example, service demand, the size of the service fleet, the capacity of the shared vehicles and whether the time window requirements are soft or tight. This paper analyzes - a Decision Support System that computes solutions with ad hoc heuristics applied to variants of Pick Up and Delivery Problems with Time Windows, as well as to Feasibility and Profitability criteria rooted in Dynamic Insertion Heuristics. To evaluate the applications, a Simulation Framework is proposed. It is based on a microscopic simulation model that emulates real-time traffic conditions and a real traffic information system. It also interacts with the Decision Support System by feeding it with the required data for making decisions in the simulation that emulate the behavior of the shared fleet. The proposed simulation framework has been implemented in a model of Barcelona’s Central Business District.     Optimization and Performance Analysis of High Speed Mobile Access Networks

    The end-to-end performance evaluation of high speed broadband mobile access networks is the main focus of this work. Novel transport network adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms are proposed, implemented, tested and validated using a comprehensive High speed packet Access (HSPA) system simulator. The simulation analysis confirms that the aforementioned algorithms are able to provide reliable and guaranteed services for both network operators and end users cost-effectively. Further, two novel analytical models one for congestion control and the other for the combined flow control and congestion control which are based on Markov chains are designed and developed to perform the aforementioned analysis efficiently compared to time consuming detailed system simulations. In addition, the effects of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) transport network (S1and X2 interfaces) on the end user performance are investigated and analysed by introducing a novel comprehensive MAC scheduling scheme and a novel transport service differentiation model

    Characteristics of WAP traffic

    This paper considers the characteristics of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) traffic. We start by constructing a WAP traffic model by analysing the behaviour of users accessing public WAP sites via a monitoring system. A wide range of different traffic scenarios were considered, but most of these scenarios resolve to one of two basic types. The paper then uses this traffic model to consider the effects of large quantities of WAP traffic on the core network. One traffic characteristic which is of particular interest in network dimensioning is the degree of self-similarity, so the paper looks at the characteristics of aggregated traffic with WAP, Web and packet speech components to estimate its self-similarity. The results indicate that, while WAP traffic alone does not exhibit a significant degree of self-similarity, a combined load from various traffic sources retains almost the same degree of self-similarity as the most self-similar individual source

    Improving Large-Scale Network Traffic Simulation with Multi-Resolution Models

    Simulating a large-scale network like the Internet is a challenging undertaking because of the sheer volume of its traffic. Packet-oriented representation provides high-fidelity details but is computationally expensive; fluid-oriented representation offers high simulation efficiency at the price of losing packet-level details. Multi-resolution modeling techniques exploit the advantages of both representations by integrating them in the same simulation framework. This dissertation presents solutions to the problems regarding the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of the traffic simulation models in this framework. The ``ripple effect\u27\u27 is a well-known problem inherent in event-driven fluid-oriented traffic simulation, causing explosion of fluid rate changes. Integrating multi-resolution traffic representations requires estimating arrival rates of packet-oriented traffic, calculating the queueing delay upon a packet arrival, and computing packet loss rate under buffer overflow. Real time simulation of a large or ultra-large network demands efficient background traffic simulation. The dissertation includes a rate smoothing technique that provably mitigates the ``ripple effect\u27\u27, an accurate and efficient approach that integrates traffic models at multiple abstraction levels, a sequential algorithm that achieves real time simulation of the coarse-grained traffic in a network with 3 tier-1 ISP (Internet Service Provider) backbones using an ordinary PC, and a highly scalable parallel algorithm that simulates network traffic at coarse time scales

    A hybrid queueing model for fast broadband networking simulation

    PhDThis research focuses on the investigation of a fast simulation method for broadband telecommunication networks, such as ATM networks and IP networks. As a result of this research, a hybrid simulation model is proposed, which combines the analytical modelling and event-driven simulation modelling to speeding up the overall simulation. The division between foreground and background traffic and the way of dealing with these different types of traffic to achieve improvement in simulation time is the major contribution reported in this thesis. Background traffic is present to ensure that proper buffering behaviour is included during the course of the simulation experiments, but only the foreground traffic of interest is simulated, unlike traditional simulation techniques. Foreground and background traffic are dealt with in a different way. To avoid the need for extra events on the event list, and the processing overhead, associated with the background traffic, the novel technique investigated in this research is to remove the background traffic completely, adjusting the service time of the queues for the background traffic to compensate (in most cases, the service time for the foreground traffic will increase). By removing the background traffic from the event-driven simulator the number of cell processing events dealt with is reduced drastically. Validation of this approach shows that, overall, the method works well, but the simulation using this method does have some differences compared with experimental results on a testbed. The reason for this is mainly because of the assumptions behind the analytical model that make the modelling tractable. Hence, the analytical model needs to be adjusted. This is done by having a neural network trained to learn the relationship between the input traffic parameters and the output difference between the proposed model and the testbed. Following this training, simulations can be run using the output of the neural network to adjust the analytical model for those particular traffic conditions. The approach is applied to cell scale and burst scale queueing to simulate an ATM switch, and it is also used to simulate an IP router. In all the applications, the method ensures a fast simulation as well as an accurate result

    Versatile Markovian models for networks with asymmetric TCP sources

    In this paper we use Stochastic Petri Nets (SPNs) to study the interaction of multiple TCP sources that share one or two buffers, thereby considerably extending earlier work. We first consider two sources sharing a buffer and investigate the consequences of two popular assumptions for the loss process in terms of fairness and link utilization. The results obtained by our model are in agreement with existing analytic models or are closer to results obtained by ns-2 simulations. We then study a network consisting of three sources and two buffers and provide evidence that link sharing is approximately minimum-potential-delay-fair in case of equal round-trip times. \u

    Data communication network at the ASRM facility

    The main objective of the report is to present the overall communication network structure for the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) facility being built at Yellow Creek near Iuka, Mississippi. This report is compiled using information received from NASA/MSFC, LMSC, AAD, and RUST Inc. As per the information gathered, the overall network structure will have one logical FDDI ring acting as a backbone for the whole complex. The buildings will be grouped into two categories viz. manufacturing critical and manufacturing non-critical. The manufacturing critical buildings will be connected via FDDI to the Operational Information System (OIS) in the main computing center in B 1000. The manufacturing non-critical buildings will be connected by 10BASE-FL to the Business Information System (BIS) in the main computing center. The workcells will be connected to the Area Supervisory Computers (ASCs) through the nearest manufacturing critical hub and one of the OIS hubs. The network structure described in this report will be the basis for simulations to be carried out next year. The Comdisco's Block Oriented Network Simulator (BONeS) will be used for the network simulation. The main aim of the simulations will be to evaluate the loading of the OIS, the BIS, the ASCs, and the network links by the traffic generated by the workstations and workcells throughout the site
