    Principle Of Bio-Inspired Insect Wing Rotational Hinge Design

    A principle for designing and fabricating bio-inspired miniature artificial insect flapping wing using flexure rotational hinge design is presented. A systematic approach of selecting rotational hinge stiffness value is proposed. Based on the understanding of flapping wing aerodynamics, a dynamic simulation is constructed using the established quasi-steady model and the wing design. Simulations were performed to gain insight on how different parameters affect the wing rotational response. Based on system resonance a model to predict the optimal rotational hinge stiffness based on given wing parameter and flapping wing kinematic is proposed. By varying different wing parameters, the proposed method is shown to be applicable to a wide range of wing designs with different sizes and shapes. With the selected hinge stiffness value, aspects of the rotational joint design is discussed and an integrated wing-hinge structure design using laminated carbon fiber and polymer film is presented. Manufacturing process of such composite structure is developed to achieve high accuracy and repeatability. The yielded hinge stiffness is verified by measurements. To validate the proposed model, flapping wing experiments were conducted. A flapping actuation set up is built using DC motor and a controller is implemented on a microcontroller to track desired wing stroke kinematic. Wing stroke and rotation kinematic were extracted using a high speed camera and the lift generation is evaluated. A total of 49 flapping experiments were presented, experimental data shows good correlation with the model\u27s prediction. With the wing rotational hinge stiffness designed so that the rotational resonant frequency is twice as the stroke frequency, the resulting wing rotation generates near optimal lift. With further simulation, the proposed model shows low sensitivity to wing parameter variation. As a result, giving a design parameter of a flapping wing robot platform, the proposed principle can predict the rotational hinge stiffness that leads to near optimal wing rotation. Further iteration can be done around the selected value and achieve the optimal lift generation

    The field of FlappingWing Micro Air Vehicles (FWMAV) has been of interest in recent years and as shown to have many aerodynamic principles unconventional to traditional aviation aerodynamics. In addition to traditional manufacturing techniques, MAVs have utilized techniques and machines that have gained significant interest and investment over the past decade, namely in additive manufacturing. This dissertation discusses the techniques used to manufacture and build a 30 gram-force (gf) model which approaches the lower limit allowed by current commercial off-the-shelf items. The vehicle utilizes a novel mechanism that minimizes traditional kinematic issues associated with four bar mechanisms for flapping wing vehicles. A kinematic reasoning for large amplitude flapping is demonstrated namely, by lowering the cycle averaged angular acceleration of the wings. The vehicle is tested for control authority and lift of the mechanism using three servo drives for wing manipulation. The study then discusses the wing design, manufacturing techniques and limitations involved with the wings for a FWMAV. A set of 17 different wings are tested for lift reaching lifts of 38 gf using the aforementioned vehicle design. The variation in wings spurs the investigation of the flow patterns generated by the flexible wings and its interactions for multiple flapping amplitudes. Phase-lock particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to investigate the unsteady flows generated by the vehicle. A novel flow pattern is experimentally found, namely “trailing edge vortex capture” upon wing reversal for all three flapping amplitudes, alluding to a newly discovered addition to the lift enhancing effect of wake capture. This effect is believed to be a result of flexible wings and may provide lift enhancing characteristics to wake capture

    IMPROVED PREDICTION OF FLAPPING WING AERIAL VEHICLE PERFORMANCE THROUGH COMPONENT INTERACTION MODELING

    Flapping wing aerial vehicles offer the promise of versatile performance, however prediction of flapping wing aerial vehicle performance is a challenging task because of complex interconnectedness in vehicle functionality. To address this challenge, performance is estimated by using component-level modeling as a foundation. Experimental characterization of the drive motors, battery, and wings is performed to identify important functional characteristics and enable selection of appropriate modeling techniques. Component-level models are then generated that capture the performance of each vehicle component. Validation of each component-level model shows where errors are eliminated by capturing important dynamic functionality. System-level modeling is then performed by creating linkages between component-level models that have already been individually validated through experimental testing, leading to real-world functional constraints that are realized and correctly modeled at the system level. The result of this methodology is a system-level performance prediction that offers the ability to explore the effects of changing vehicle components as well as changing functional properties, while maintaining computational tractability. Simulated results are compared to experimental flight test data collected with an instrumented flapping wing aerial vehicle, and are shown to offer good accuracy in estimation of system-level performance properties

    In this thesis, the structure and aeroelastic design, analysis and optimization of conventional fixed wing is firstly addressed. Based on the study results of conventional fixed wing, the study then focuses on the more complicated aerodynamics and aeroelasticity of flapping wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAV). A Finite Element (FE) model of a composite aircraft wing is firstly used as case study for the aeroelasticity of conventional fixed wing. A MATLAB-NASTRAN interfaced optimization platform is created to explore the optimal design of the wing. Optimizations using the developed platform show that 13% of weight reduction can be achieved when the optimization objective is set to minimize wing weight; and 18.5% of flutter speed increase can be achieved when aeroelastic tailoring of composite laminate layups is carried out. The study results further showed that the most sensitive part of the wing for aeroelastic tailoring is near the engine location, which contributes to the majority of flutter speed increment for optimization. In order to facilitate the structural design of non-circular cross section fuselage of Blended-Wing-Body (BWB) aircraft, an analytical model of 2D non-circular cross section is developed, which provides efficient design and optimization of the fuselage structure without referring to FE models. A case study based on a typical BWB fuselage using the developed model shows that by optimizing the fuselage structure, significant weight saving (17%) can be achieved. In comparison with the conventional fixed wing, insect flapping wings demonstrate more complicated aerodynamic and aeroelastic phenomena. A semi-empirical quasi-steady aerodynamic model is firstly developed to model the unsteady aerodynamic force of flapping wing. Based on this model, the aerodynamic efficiency of a Flapping Wing Rotor (FWR) MAV is investigated. The results show that the optimal wing kinematics of the FWR falls into a narrow range of design parameters governed by the dimensionless Strouhal number (St). Furthermore, the results show that the passive rotational of the FWR converges to an equilibrium state of high aerodynamic efficiency, which is a desirable feature for MAV applications. Next, the aerodynamic lift coefficient and efficiency of the FWR are calculated and compared with typical insect-like flapping wings and rotary wing. The results show that the aerodynamic efficiency of FWR in typical wing kinematics is higher than insect-like flapping wings, but slightly lower than the conventional rotary wing; the FWR aerodynamic lift coefficient (CL) surpassed the other wings significantly. Based on the numerical results, the study then continued to experimental investigations of the FWR. A prototype FWR model of weight 2.6g is mounted on a load cell to measure the instantaneous lift production. The kinematics of the wing is captured using high speed camera. Aeroelastic twist of the wing is measured using the resulting wing motion. Analyses by CFD and the quasi-steady aerodynamic model is then carried out and compared with experimental results. The study revealed that passive twist of the FWR wing due to aeroelastic effects forms desirable variations of wing Angle of Attack (AoA), which improves the aerodynamic performance of FWR.     Drawing inspiration from insect flapping wings, a Flapping Wing Rotor (FWR) has been developed for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) applications. The FWR features unique active flapping and passive rotary kinematics of motion to achieve a high lift coefficient and flight efficiency. This study thoroughly investigates the aerodynamic performance and design of a bio-inspired flexible wing for FWR-MAVs, emphasizing its novel backward-curved wingtip and variable spanwise stiffness resembling a dragonfly's wing. The research departs from previous aerodynamic studies of FWR, which focused predominantly on rectangular and rigid wings, and delves into wing flexibility. Employing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD), and experimental measurements, the study demonstrates the aerodynamic benefits of the dragonfly-inspired FWR wingtip shape and its reinforced structure. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis is used to examine the effects of elastic deformation encompassing twist and bending on aerodynamic forces. The results underscore the importance of bending deformation in enhancing lift and power efficiency and propose a method for analysing variable stiffness along the wingspan using a vortex delay mechanism that is induced by delayed flapping motion. By comparing modelled and measured stiffness, the study validates the flexibility of the FWR wing, revealing optimal aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through moderate flexibility and spanwise stiffness variation. The curving leading-edge beam forming the sweep-back wingtip offers a practical approach to obtaining variable stiffness and aerodynamic benefits for FWR-MAVs. Using the same pair of dragonfly-like flexible wings, FWR-MAVs have effectively exhibited VTOL and hovering flight capabilities, spanning from a 25-g single-motor drive model to a 51-g dual-motor drive model.
