    Microwave based monitoring system for corrosion under insulation

    This thesis presents the work undertaken by the author within the institute of Signals, Sensors and Systems in the school of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. The main aim of the research was to design and develop a non-destructive sensor capable of monitoring the onset of corrosion under insulation. The development of the sensor has involved the design of a complete system to stabilise and control the sensor, the development of a COMSOL model to understand the progression of corrosion to determine the remaining useful life of the asset, and an investigation into horn antenna design to inform the design of the optimal sensor head. The designed sensor system was tested with a variety of samples to benchmark the effectiveness of the sensor and prove the concept viability as a product. Experiments proved the concept of sensing defects in metallic surface with or without insulation layers. Samples simulating real life corrosion were tested to prove the resilience of the sensor when defects were less guaranteed. Remaining useful life estimations were conducted on simulated defects to show the sensor ability to become a smart sensor using prognostic health management techniques. Finally the environmental tests were conducted to ensure the sensor was indeed nondestructive, confirming that all aspects of the research had been successfully completed

    A Probabilistic Model and Capturing Device for Remote Simultaneous Estimation of Spectral Emissivity and Temperature of Hot Emissive Materials

    Estimating the temperature of hot emissive samples (e.g. liquid slag) in the context of harsh industrial environments such as steelmaking plants is a crucial yet challenging task, which is typically addressed by means of methods that require physical contact. Current remote methods require information on the emissivity of the sample. However, the spectral emissivity is dependent on the sample composition and temperature itself, and it is hardly measurable unless under controlled laboratory procedures. In this work, we present a portable device and associated probabilistic model that can simultaneously produce quasi real-time estimates for temperature and spectral emissivity of hot samples in the [0.2, 12.0μm ] range at distances of up to 20m . The model is robust against variable atmospheric conditions, and the device is presented together with a quick calibration procedure that allows for in field deployment in rough industrial environments, thus enabling in line measurements. We validate the temperature and emissivity estimates by our device against laboratory equipment under controlled conditions in the [550, 850∘C ] temperature range for two solid samples with well characterized spectral emissivity’s: alumina ( α−Al2O3 ) and hexagonal boron nitride ( h−BN ). The analysis of the results yields Root Mean Squared Errors of 32.3∘C and 5.7∘C respectively, and well correlated spectral emissivity’s.This work was supported in part by the Basque Government (Hazitek AURRERA B: Advanced and Useful REdesign of CSP process for new steel gRAdes) under Grant ZE-2017/00009

    Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology

    Technical Evaluation Motor Number 7 (TEM-7) was a full scale, full-duration static test firing of a high performance motor (HPM) configuration solid rocket motor (SRM) with nozzle vectoring. The static test fire occurred on 11 December 1990 at the Thiokol Corporation Static Test Bay T-97. Documented here are the procedures, performance, and results available through 22 January 1991. Critical post test hardware activities and assessment of the test data are not complete. A completed test report will be submitted 60 days after the test date.     A Novel Propeller Design for Micro-Swimming robot

    The applications of a micro-swimming robot such as minimally invasive surgery, liquid pipeline robot etc. are widespread in recent years. The potential application fields are so inspiring, and it is becoming more and more achievable with the development of microbiology and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The aim of this study is to improve the performance of micro-swimming robot through redesign the structure. To achieve the aim, this study reviewed all of the modelling methods of low Reynolds number flow including Resistive-force Theory (RFT), Slender Body Theory (SBT), and Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) etc. The swimming model with these methods has been analysed. Various aspects e.g. hydrodynamic interaction, design, development, optimisation and numerical methods from the previous researches have been studied. Based on the previous design of helix propeller for micro-swimmer, this study has proposed a novel propeller design for a micro-swimming robot which can improve the velocity with simplified propulsion structure. This design has adapted the coaxial symmetric double helix to improve the performance of propulsion and to increase stability. The central lines of two helical tails overlap completely to form a double helix structure, and its tail radial force is balanced with the same direction and can produce a stable axial motion. The verification of this design is conducted using two case studies. The first one is a pipe inspection robot which is in mm scale and swims in high viscosity flow that satisfies the low Reynolds number flow condition. Both simulation and experiment analysis are conducted for this case study. A cross-development method is adopted for the simulation analysis and prototype development. The experiment conditions are set up based on the simulation conditions. The conclusion from the analysis of simulation results gives suggestions to improve design and fabrication for the prototype. Some five revisions of simulation and four revisions of the prototype have been completed. The second case study is the human blood vessel robot. For the limitations of fabrication technology, only simulation is conducted, and the result is compared with previous researches. The results show that the proposed propeller design can improve velocity performance significantly. The main outcomes of this study are the design of a micro-swimming robot with higher velocity performance and the validation from both simulation and experiment

    Design of a lunar propellant processing facility. NASA/USRA advanced program

    Mankind's exploration of space will eventually lead to the establishment of a permanent human presence on the Moon. Essential to the economic viability of such an undertaking will be prudent utilization of indigenous lunar resources. The design of a lunar propellant processing system is presented. The system elements include facilities for ore processing, ice transportation, water splitting, propellant storage, personnel and materials transportation, human habitation, power generation, and communications. The design scenario postulates that ice is present in the lunar polar regions, and that an initial lunar outpost was established. Mining, ore processing, and water transportation operations are located in the polar regions. Water processing and propellant storage facilities are positioned near the equator. A general description of design operations is outlined below. Regolith containing the ice is mined from permanently-shaded polar craters. Water is separated from the ore using a microwave processing technique, and refrozen into projectiles for launch to the equatorial site via railgun. A mass-catching device retrieves the ice. This ice is processed using fractional distillation to remove impurities, and the purified liquid water is fed to an electrolytic cell that splits the water into vaporous hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen and oxygen are condensed and stored separately in a tank farm. Electric power for all operations is supplied by SP-100 nuclear reactors. Transportation of materials and personnel is accomplished primarily using chemical rockets. Modular living habitats are used which provide flexibility for the placement and number of personnel. A communications system consisting of lunar surface terminals, a lunar relay satellite, and terrestrial surface stations provides capabilities for continuous Moon-Moon and Moon-Earth transmissions of voice, picture, and data
