Who is the director of this movie? Automatic style recognition based on shot features
We show how low-level formal features, such as shot duration, meant as length
of camera takes, and shot scale, i.e. the distance between the camera and the
subject, are distinctive of a director's style in art movies. So far such
features were thought of not having enough varieties to become distinctive of
an author. However our investigation on the full filmographies of six different
authors (Scorsese, Godard, Tarr, Fellini, Antonioni, and Bergman) for a total
number of 120 movies analysed second by second, confirms that these
shot-related features do not appear as random patterns in movies from the same
director. For feature extraction we adopt methods based on both conventional
and deep learning techniques. Our findings suggest that feature sequential
patterns, i.e. how features evolve in time, are at least as important as the
related feature distributions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first
study dealing with automatic attribution of movie authorship, which opens up
interesting lines of cross-disciplinary research on the impact of style on the
aesthetic and emotional effects on the viewers
Content-Based Video Retrieval in Historical Collections of the German Broadcasting Archive
The German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) maintains the cultural heritage of
radio and television broadcasts of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).
The uniqueness and importance of the video material stimulates a large
scientific interest in the video content. In this paper, we present an
automatic video analysis and retrieval system for searching in historical
collections of GDR television recordings. It consists of video analysis
algorithms for shot boundary detection, concept classification, person
recognition, text recognition and similarity search. The performance of the
system is evaluated from a technical and an archival perspective on 2,500 hours

TREC video retrieval evaluation: a case study and status report
The TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation is a multiyear, international effort, funded by the US Advanced Research and Development Agency (ARDA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to promote progress in content-based retrieval from digital video via open, metrics-based evaluation. Now beginning its fourth year, it aims over time to develop both a better understanding of
how systems can effectively accomplish such retrieval
and how one can reliably benchmark their performance. This paper can be seen as a case study in the development of video retrieval systems and their evaluation as well as a report on their status to-date. After an introduction to the evolution of the evaluation over the past three years, the paper reports on the most recent evaluation TRECVID 2003: the evaluation framework â the 4 tasks (shot boundary determination, high-level feature extraction, story segmentation and typing, search), 133 hours of US television
news data, and measures â, the results, and the approaches taken by the 24 participating groups
Automatic Generation of Video Summaries for Historical Films
A video summary is a sequence of video clips extracted from a longer video. Much shorter than the original, the summary preserves its essential messages. In the project ECHO (European Chronicles On-line) a system was developed to store and manage large collections of historical films for the preservation of cultural heritage. At the University of Mannheim we have developed the video summarization component of the ECHO system. In this paper we discuss the particular challenges the historical film material poses, and how we have designed new video processing algorithms and modified existing ones to cope with noisy black-and-white films. We also report empirical results from the use of our summarization tool at the four major European national video archives
Exploring the usage of a video application tool: Experiences in film studies
This paper explores our experiences in deploying a video application tool in film studies, and its evaluation in terms of realistic contextual end-users who have real tasks to perform in a real environment. We demonstrate our experiences and core lesson learnt in deploying our novel movie browser application with undergraduate and graduate students completing a Film Studies course in Dublin City University over a semester. We developed a system called MOVIEBROWSER2 that has two types of browsing modes: Advanced and Basic. In general, students found that the features we provided were beneficial for their studies. Some issues or mismatches arose during the trial. A âwish-listâ was drawn up that might be useful for the future system developer. The contribution and achievements reported in this article are on the demonstration and exploration of how advances in technology can be deployed, and media can be accessed in the context of a real user community. Exploring the usage indicates a positive acceptance among students, besides lessons learned that are important for further investigation

Design, deployment and assessment of a movie archive system in a film studies context
This thesis describe our work in developing a movie archive system for students of Film Studies in Dublin City University. In particular, our system uses several recent multimedia technologies to automatically process digital video content but at the same time we use the usability engineering process to relate to the real tasks of real users in their real environments.
We investigate how real users take advantage of technologies in a movie browsing system. By designing, building, deploying and assessing the usage of a technology in a user-focused way, the overall impact of a movie browsing system can be determined holistically.
The application domain we work in is film studies where students need to study movie contents and analyse movie sequences. Our work began by identification of user
needs through observations, focus groups and usability testing, followed by sketching and prototyping a web-based system. We then deployed the system to film study classes over a semester, monitored usage and gathered quantitative as well as qualitative data. Focused experiments were carried out to assess studentsâ performance and satisfaction levels. Our findings show expected patterns of usage of a real-user setting outside the lab, but at the
same time highlighted issues that need to be further investigated. In general, students found most of the provided features were beneficial for their studies. Findings from the experiment shows better performance in the essay assessments and higher satisfaction levels.
An interesting finding shows students are more engaged with the newly-introduced software application and take longer time to complete the same task than without the advanced
features of the application. This phenomenon was rationalized from established learning theory from the psychology domain. In a technologically-oriented multimedia field today, we attempted to bring in a user-centred approach of end-user interactions throughout a 3-year development process, and we identified benefits and challenges in trying to align the technical perspectives of novel multimedia features to real-world setting
