Design for me?

In this paper, as a generative contrast to the notion of design “for all”, we present and discuss the potential benefits of a design “for me” approach, where the design process from the starts from, and initially is targeted at, just one person. Given many things developed for a user group or a constructed average user, in this text we describe starting from design for a single user as an alternative approach for achieving useful and useworthy designs. We provide an example from the development of an assistive device as the starting point and discuss how and why this alternative approach should be of interest for everyone interested in usability

A proposal of an evaluation model under the principles of universal design

The aim of this work is to try to set out how the Universal Design (UD) paradigm can influence the process of product design and how the models of evaluation should work for products designed for all users. Firstly, we will give a short introduction of some of the basic models that try to explain the product design and development process emphasizing, especially, the role given to evaluation of the design stage. Secondly, what we would like to do is explain, on one hand, the paradigms of Human Centred Product Planning and Design and, on the other hand, UD/Inclusive Design (ID)/ Design for All (DfA) in order to clarify the bonds and relationships which are established between these in the field of Ergonomics and Human Factors. In this context, we explain how these philosophies have an effect and an influence in the process of design, especially in the interstages of evaluation. Finally, we present a model that proposes the integration of UD principles into the process of design applying it to the case of a wheelchair

Aktivitetsdiamanten : Modellering av en vidareutvecklad tillgänglighet

Syftet med forskningen som presenteras i denna avhandling är att vidareutveckla tillgänglighetsområdet i riktning mot en större perspektivrikedom. Avhandlingen baseras på kulturhistorisk aktivitetsteori (CHAT). Den analyserar en systemisk helhet utifrån sådana mänskliga, artefaktuella och naturliga faktorer som påverkar en individs handlingsmöjligheter i konkreta situationer.Avhandlingen har två huvudresultat:En vidareutvecklad tillgänglighet innehållande:* Epitillgänglighet, tillgänglighetens tidsanda, som innefattar hur erfarenheter av aktiviteter påverkar tillgänglighetsmöjligheter, lärande, förväntningar, attityder, tillit, krav och förnekanden hos individen och hennes mänskliga, artefaktuella och naturliga omvärld.* Levd tillgänglighet, som innefattar individens förväntningar och hur hon i den aktuella situationen upplever möjligheterna att kunna göra det hon vill.* Planerad tillgänglighet, som består av alla förutbestämda tillgänglighetsfaktorer utifrån planer, riktlinjer och principer.Aktivitetsdiamanten, en modell för tillgänglighet: Aktivitetsdiamanten beskriver ett mänskligt aktivitetssystem där subjekt-objekt-kopplingen inte sker direkt utan via mänskliga, artefaktuella och naturliga inslag i miljön. Modellen bygger på samspelet mellan dessa fyra element (subjekt, objekt, omgivande natur/artefakter och människor) och är situerad i tid och rum. Olika aktörer med olika aktivitetssystem kan vara inblandade. Modellen kan också användas longitudinellt över tid.Avhandlingen är baserad på en serie explorativa studier av unika individers aktivitetssystem där människor, artefakter och natur tillsammans påverkar tillgängligheten. Handlingen står i centrum, inte funktionsnedsättningarna och inte heller de diskriminerande faktorerna i samhället.Avhandlingen består av en avhandlingskappa och följande fyra publikationer:I. Nutzerzentrierte Gestaltung für Menschen mit kognitiver Beeinträchtigung

Ein grosser Bevölkerungsanteil lebt mit einer kognitiven Beeinträchtigung. Die betroffenen Personen begegnen aufgrund ihrer funktionalen Einschränkungen bei der Nutzung von Informationstechnologien Herausforderungen, die sie gegebenenfalls an der gesellschaftlichen Partizipation hindern. Eine Berücksichtigung dieser Nutzergruppe bei der Technologiegestaltung und -entwicklung ist deshalb zwingend notwendig, findet jedoch in der Praxis kaum statt. Etablierte Methoden der nutzerzentrierten Gestaltung zielen auf Menschen mit durchschnittlichen Eigenschaften ab. Einige Studien und Projekte wurden bereits durchgeführt, jedoch fehlt es an einem strukturierten Überblick sowie an Ansätzen, wie die nutzerzentrierte Gestaltung für Menschen mit kognitiver Beeinträchtigung eingesetzt und adaptiert werden kann. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse der Projekte und Studien des Fachbereichs sind ernüchternd. Zwar ziehen einige Studien Menschen mit kognitiver Beeinträchtigung explizit in den Designprozess mit ein, doch wird kaum über das Vorgehen oder nötige Anpassungen reflektiert. Durch die Vielfalt der Menschen mit kognitiver Beeinträchtigung können zwar einige Empfehlungen für die Einbeziehung formuliert werden, diese zu generalisieren und auf andere Projekte zu übertragen, stellt jedoch eine Herausforderung dar. Daher wird ein standardisiertes Framework für das Teilen von Erkenntnissen aus durchgeführten Projekten gefordert. Es müssen geeignete Methoden gefunden werden, wenn kognitiv beeinträchtige Menschen miteinbezogen werden sollen – insbesondere dann, wenn zusätzlich weitere Nutzergruppen mit abweichender Beeinträchtigung involviert sind. Die Problematik hängt jedoch nicht nur von der Forschung ab und so bleibt in Zukunft die Übertragung der Erkenntnisse in die Praxis eine der grössten Herausforderungen

Sistematização da implementação de tecnologia assistiva para o contexto educacional

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de ProduçãoEsta tese insere-se no contexto da gestão educacional, com o objetivo de desenvolver uma sistematização para gerir a implementação de Tecnologia Assistiva (TA) direcionada à demanda de alunos com deficiência matriculados na rede regular de ensino no Brasil. Para a elaboração da sistematização, o método utilizado durante a pesquisa foi o estudo de caso, sendo esse aplicado junto à rede municipal de educação de cidade de Florianópolis. Após a realização de levantamento bibliográfico relacionado às áreas correlatas do estudo, fez-se uso de entrevistas semiestruturadas junto às pessoas envolvidas no contexto de uso da TA, valendo-se dos questionários como principal instrumento de pesquisa. A partir do conhecimento da modelagem de processos e da compreensão acerca dos diferentes pontos de vista relacionados à implementação de TA na realidade estudada, pôde-se gerar uma lista de requisitos para a elaboração de uma nova sistemática de gestão. O resultado foi o desenvolvimento da SITA (Sistematização da Implementação de Tecnologia Assistiva), descrita através de fases, atividades, tarefas e recursos de apoio necessários para guiar o trabalho de gestores da área da educação e cuidadores de educandos com deficiência. Concluiu-se que apenas com a integração de todos os componentes previstos na SITA é que um projeto de inclusão educacional, pautado no desenvolvimento de TA, poderá ser bem sucedido.This thesis fits into the context of educational administration, with the goal of developing systematization to manage the implementation of Assistive Technology (AT) directed to the demand of students with disabilities enrolled in regular educational network in Brazil. For the systematization development, the method used during the survey was the case study, this being implemented in Florianopolis city municipal educational network. After performing a literature review connected to the related fields of study, use has been made of semi-structured interviews with people involved in the context of use of AT, with questionnaires as the main research instrument. From the knowledge of process modeling and understanding of different points of view related to the implementation of AT actually studied, we could generate a list of requirements for developing a new system of management. The result was the development of SATI (Systematization for Assistive Technology Implementation), described by stages, activities, tasks and support resources needed to guide the work of managers in the field of education and caregivers of students with disabilities. It was concluded that, only with the integration of all components contained in SATI, a project of educational inclusion based on the development of AT may be successful
