    CLEVER: a cooperative and cross-layer approach to video streaming in HetNets

    We investigate the problem of providing a video streaming service to mobile users in an heterogeneous cellular network composed of micro e-NodeBs (eNBs) and macro e-NodeBs (MeNBs). More in detail, we target a cross-layer dynamic allocation of the bandwidth resources available over a set of eNBs and one MeNB, with the goal of reducing the delay per chunk experienced by users. After optimally formulating the problem of minimizing the chunk delay, we detail the Cross LayEr Video stReaming (CLEVER) algorithm, to practically tackle it. CLEVER makes allocation decisions on the basis of information retrieved from the application layer aswell as from lower layers. Results, obtained over two representative case studies, show that CLEVER is able to limit the chunk delay, while also reducing the amount of bandwidth reserved for offloaded users on the MeNB, as well as the number of offloaded users. In addition, we show that CLEVER performs clearly better than two selected reference algorithms, while being very close to a best bound. Finally, we show that our solution is able to achieve high fairness indexes and good levels of Quality of Experience (QoE)

    Exploiting Non-Causal CPU-State Information for Energy-Efficient Mobile Cooperative Computing

    Scavenging the idling computation resources at the enormous number of mobile devices can provide a powerful platform for local mobile cloud computing. The vision can be realized by peer-to-peer cooperative computing between edge devices, referred to as co-computing. This paper considers a co-computing system where a user offloads computation of input-data to a helper. The helper controls the offloading process for the objective of minimizing the user's energy consumption based on a predicted helper's CPU-idling profile that specifies the amount of available computation resource for co-computing. Consider the scenario that the user has one-shot input-data arrival and the helper buffers offloaded bits. The problem for energy-efficient co-computing is formulated as two sub-problems: the slave problem corresponding to adaptive offloading and the master one to data partitioning. Given a fixed offloaded data size, the adaptive offloading aims at minimizing the energy consumption for offloading by controlling the offloading rate under the deadline and buffer constraints. By deriving the necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal solution, we characterize the structure of the optimal policies and propose algorithms for computing the policies. Furthermore, we show that the problem of optimal data partitioning for offloading and local computing at the user is convex, admitting a simple solution using the sub-gradient method. Last, the developed design approach for co-computing is extended to the scenario of bursty data arrivals at the user accounting for data causality constraints.     MADServer: An Architecture for Opportunistic Mobile Advanced Delivery

    Rapid increases in cellular data traffic demand creative alternative delivery vectors for data. Despite the conceptual attractiveness of mobile data offloading, no concrete web server architectures integrate intelligent offloading in a production-ready and easily deployable manner without relying on vast infrastructural changes to carriers’ networks. Delay-tolerant networking technology offers the means to do just this. We introduce MADServer, a novel DTN-based architecture for mobile data offloading that splits web con- tent among multiple independent delivery vectors based on user and data context. It enables intelligent data offload- ing, caching, and querying solutions which can be incorporated in a manner that still satisfies user expectations for timely delivery. At the same time, it allows for users who have poor or expensive connections to the cellular network to leverage multi-hop opportunistic routing to send and receive data. We also present a preliminary implementation of MADServer and provide real-world performance evaluations

    Stacked Auto Encoder Based Deep Reinforcement Learning for Online Resource Scheduling in Large-Scale MEC Networks

    An online resource scheduling framework is proposed for minimizing the sum of weighted task latency for all the Internet-of-Things (IoT) users, by optimizing offloading decision, transmission power, and resource allocation in the large-scale mobile-edge computing (MEC) system. Toward this end, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based solution is proposed, which includes the following components. First, a related and regularized stacked autoencoder (2r-SAE) with unsupervised learning is applied to perform data compression and representation for high-dimensional channel quality information (CQI) data, which can reduce the state space for DRL. Second, we present an adaptive simulated annealing approach (ASA) as the action search method of DRL, in which an adaptive h -mutation is used to guide the search direction and an adaptive iteration is proposed to enhance the search efficiency during the DRL process. Third, a preserved and prioritized experience replay (2p-ER) is introduced to assist the DRL to train the policy network and find the optimal offloading policy. The numerical results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance while significantly decreasing the computational time compared with existing benchmarks

    Towards Hybrid Cloud-assisted Crowdsourced Live Streaming: Measurement and Analysis

    Crowdsourced Live Streaming (CLS), most notably Twitch.tv, has seen explosive growth in its popularity in the past few years. In such systems, any user can lively broadcast video content of interest to others, e.g., from a game player to many online viewers. To fulfill the demands from both massive and heterogeneous broadcasters and viewers, expensive server clusters have been deployed to provide video ingesting and transcoding services. Despite the existence of highly popular channels, a significant portion of the channels is indeed unpopular. Yet as our measurement shows, these broadcasters are consuming considerable system resources; in particular, 25% (resp. 30%) of bandwidth (resp. computation) resources are used by the broadcasters who do not have any viewers at all. In this paper, we closely examine the challenge of handling unpopular live-broadcasting channels in CLS systems and present a comprehensive solution for service partitioning on hybrid cloud. The trace-driven evaluation shows that our hybrid cloud-assisted design can smartly assign ingesting and transcoding tasks to the elastic cloud virtual machines, providing flexible system deployment cost-effectively
