Spaces of Communication

"Semio-pragmatics, an approach to the study of film and audiovisual media first proposed by Roger Odin in the early 1980s, shifted the focus from textual analysis to the interaction of text and context and to the institutional modes of framing and reading which shape the viewer’s engagement with the film. A response to an impasse in post-1968 film semiotics and psychoanalytical approaches to film spectatorship, semio-pragmatics contributed significantly to the further development of film studies alongside Cultural Studies, neo-formalism, historical reception studies and the phenomenology of film. Eliseo Verón leído desde la perspectiva de los estudios en comunicación alemanes: Semio-pragmática, comunicación e investigación en mediatización

El trabajo de Eliseo Verón es un gran desafío para la comunidad de académicos de la comunicación en Alemania, que ha sido –contrariamente a Francia, España, Italia y una gran cantidad de países latinoamericanos– tradicionalmente no dominada por la semiótica. Lo que podemos aprender de Verón es a tomar el texto (mediático) seriamente por ambos lados, los procesos de decodificación y encodificación así como su interdependencia. Esto ha sido olvidado por un largo tiempo en los estudios en comunicación alemanes, los que han estado dominados por una perspectiva centrada en el usuario; extensamente influidos por el famoso paradigma de Lazarsfeld del «Doble Flujo de la Comunicación», al igual que por la investigación de los Usos-ygratificaciones en la línea de Elihu Katz y sus sucesores. En este contexto, el siguiente artículo esboza dos problemáticas principales del trabajo de Verón: La Mediatización como una especie de meta-proceso en la sociedad moderna, así como sus consecuencias: la realidadmediatizada. Ambas perspectivas están conectadas con su trabajo en semio-pragmática.

Aux marges de la fiction sérielle télévisuelle : sémio-pragmatique de la shortcom familiale

Cet article examine la relation entretenue par le sous-genre de la shortcom familiale avec la fiction sérielle télévisuelle, à partir d’un cadre théorique qui n’a pas été pensé pour l’analyse des séries télévisées : la sémio-pragmatique. Alors que les shortcoms familiales Scènes de ménages (M6, 2009-), Nos chers voisins (TF1, 2012-2017) ou Parents mode d’emploi (France 2, 2013-) se présentent comme des formes fictionnelles, leur analyse sémio-pragmatique révèle une hybridité énonciative de nature à solliciter de la part des publics d’autres modes de lecture que la seule lecture fictionnalisante.This paper examines the relationships between the subgenre of the family shortcom and the serial TV fiction, from a theoretical frame which hasn’t been conceived to analyze TV series: semio-pragmatics. While family shortcoms such as Scènes de ménages (M6, 2009-), Nos chers voisins (TF1, 2012-2017) or Parents mode d’emploi (France 2, 2013-) present themselves as fictional forms, their semio-pragmatic analysis reveals an enunciative hybridity likely to encourage others reading modes from the audience than only a fictionalizing one

Las proyecciones de Cine Casero desde la perspectiva semiopragmática

The purpose of this article is to analyze the home movies from the Roger Odin semiopragmatic perspective, from the study of projection of the Cine Casero project sessions. This project aims to promote the custody of intangible cultural heritage through research and identification of home movies and amateur audiovisual records, as well as educate the owners of these films in basic preventive conservation practices. The application of the analysis tool that proposes semio-pragmatics can reassess the importance of this particular type of audiovisual production in the promotion and protection of cultural heritage. El propósito de este artículo es analizar el cine doméstico desde la perspectiva semiopragmática planteada por Roger Odin, a partir del estudio de las sesiones de proyección del proyecto Cine Casero. Este proyecto se propone promover la custodia del patrimonio cultural inmaterial a través  e la investigación e identificación de registros audiovisuales amateurs y películas familiares, así como capacitar a los propietarios de estas películas en prácticas básicas de conservación preventiva. La aplicación de la herramienta de análisis que propone la perspectiva semiopragmática permite revalorar la importancia de este tipo particular de producción audiovisual en la promoción y en la protección del patrimonio cultural.

Defining the Relation between Cognitive Neuroscience and Discourse Studies

In contemporary linguistics, both cognitive and critical approaches to language have been elaborated in some detail. Unfortunately, the two perspectives have seldom converged, despite the potential theoretical advances such collaboration offers. Although historically and sociologically understandable, this separation of fields is bound to block progress. Only a handful of researchers and scholars in literature, music, film, esthetics, and art history have been attempting to follow and engage with developments in cognitive neuroscience. This represents a lost opportunity for scientists no less than for humanists, as critics and theorists of the arts are uniquely trained to pose questions and adduce examples that could bring more rigor and refinement, as well as cultural resonance, to the new sciences of mind

L’univers des génériques d'ouverture dans les oeuvres fantastiques américaines et contemporaines

Ce mémoire se concentre sur les génériques d’ouverture et sur les techniques proposées par les concepteurs de ce segment filmique visant à inviter le spectateur à entrer dans la fiction. Cette étude cherche à catégoriser les génériques d’ouverture étudiés selon les éléments montrés à l’écran pour présenter un univers divergent du nôtre. Les films américains contemporains fantastiques sont mis de l’avant afin d’analyser la présentation d’un nouvel univers. À partir de théories et de définitions sur les génériques, l’analyse se développera à l’aide des bases de la sémio-pragmatique de Roger Odin. L’intérêt de cette recherche est de comprendre les opérations effectuées par le générique pour que le spectateur entre dès le départ en phase avec l’œuvre.This dissertation focuses on the opening credits and the techniques proposed by the designers of this filmic segment to invite the audience into the fiction. This study seeks to categorize the opening credits studied according to the elements shown on the screen to present a universe divergent from our own. Contemporary American fantasy films are put forward to analyze the presentation of a new universe. Starting with theories and definitions of generics, the analysis will be developed using the foundations of Roger Odin's semio-pragmatics.
