On the Evaluation of Semantic Phenomena in Neural Machine Translation Using Natural Language Inference
We propose a process for investigating the extent to which sentence
representations arising from neural machine translation (NMT) systems encode
distinct semantic phenomena. We use these representations as features to train
a natural language inference (NLI) classifier based on datasets recast from
existing semantic annotations. In applying this process to a representative NMT
system, we find its encoder appears most suited to supporting inferences at the
syntax-semantics interface, as compared to anaphora resolution requiring
world-knowledge. We conclude with a discussion on the merits and potential
deficiencies of the existing process, and how it may be improved and extended
as a broader framework for evaluating semantic coverage.Comment: To be presented at NAACL 2018 - 11 page

Probabilistic Approach to Epistemic Modals in the Framework of Dynamic Semantics
In dynamic semantics meaning of a statement is not equated with its truth
conditions but with its context change potential. It has also been claimed
that dynamic framework can automatically account for certain paradoxes
that involve epistemic modals, such as the following one: it seems odd and
incoherent to claim: (1) “It is raining and it might not rain”, whereas
claiming (2) “It might not rain and it is raining” does not seem equally odd
(Yalcin, 2007). Nevertheless, it seems that it cannot capture the fact that
statement (2) seems odd as well, even though not as odd as the statement
(1) (Gauker, 2007). I will argue that certain probabilistic extensions to the
dynamic model can account for this subtlety of our linguistic intuitions and
represent if not an improved than at least an alternative framework for
capturing the way contexts are updated and beliefs revised with uncertain

Subject-tracking and topic continuity in the Church Slavonic translation of the story of Abraham and his niece Mary
The present article addresses issues of referentiality and text cohesion in a Church Slavonic narrative text. Starting with the specific problem of referential conflict as formulated by Kibrik (19871, issues of tracking personal participants in a narrative text are broadly explored in order to arrive at a rationale for the construction of cohesive text interpretation through topic continuity in subject position. The article takes an interpretative text-based approach of close-reading and argues for participant tracking to be dependent on text genre and general cultural prerequisites of text reading and interpretation rather than on systemic grammatical features of language. It is also hinted at the possibility that medieval narrative text genres (like the Byzantine-Slavic hagiographic genre being explored in this paper through the specimen of the Story of Abraham and Mary) may adhere to a type of narrative construction which places more responsibility on the reader-listener than on the narrator
Definiteness Projection
We argue that definite noun phrases give rise to uniqueness inferences characterized by a pattern we call definiteness projection. Definiteness projection says that the uniqueness inference of a definite projects out unless there is an indefinite antecedent in a position that filters presuppositions. We argue that definiteness projection poses a serious puzzle for e-type theories of (in)definites; on such theories, indefinites should filter existence presuppositions but not uniqueness presuppositions. We argue that definiteness projection also poses challenges for dynamic approaches, which have trouble generating uniqueness inferences and predicting some filtering behavior, though unlike the challenge for e-type theories, these challenges have mostly been noted in the literature, albeit in a piecemeal way. Our central aim, however, is not to argue for or against a particular view, but rather to formulate and motivate a generalization about definiteness which any adequate theory must account for
Comparing and evaluating extended Lambek calculi
Lambeks Syntactic Calculus, commonly referred to as the Lambek calculus, was
innovative in many ways, notably as a precursor of linear logic. But it also
showed that we could treat our grammatical framework as a logic (as opposed to
a logical theory). However, though it was successful in giving at least a basic
treatment of many linguistic phenomena, it was also clear that a slightly more
expressive logical calculus was needed for many other cases. Therefore, many
extensions and variants of the Lambek calculus have been proposed, since the
eighties and up until the present day. As a result, there is now a large class
of calculi, each with its own empirical successes and theoretical results, but
also each with its own logical primitives. This raises the question: how do we
compare and evaluate these different logical formalisms? To answer this
question, I present two unifying frameworks for these extended Lambek calculi.
Both are proof net calculi with graph contraction criteria. The first calculus
is a very general system: you specify the structure of your sequents and it
gives you the connectives and contractions which correspond to it. The calculus
can be extended with structural rules, which translate directly into graph
rewrite rules. The second calculus is first-order (multiplicative
intuitionistic) linear logic, which turns out to have several other,
independently proposed extensions of the Lambek calculus as fragments. I will
illustrate the use of each calculus in building bridges between analyses
proposed in different frameworks, in highlighting differences and in helping to

A Logic-based Approach for Recognizing Textual Entailment Supported by Ontological Background Knowledge
We present the architecture and the evaluation of a new system for
recognizing textual entailment (RTE). In RTE we want to identify automatically
the type of a logical relation between two input texts. In particular, we are
interested in proving the existence of an entailment between them. We conceive
our system as a modular environment allowing for a high-coverage syntactic and
semantic text analysis combined with logical inference. For the syntactic and
semantic analysis we combine a deep semantic analysis with a shallow one
supported by statistical models in order to increase the quality and the
accuracy of results. For RTE we use logical inference of first-order employing
model-theoretic techniques and automated reasoning tools. The inference is
supported with problem-relevant background knowledge extracted automatically
and on demand from external sources like, e.g., WordNet, YAGO, and OpenCyc, or
other, more experimental sources with, e.g., manually defined presupposition
resolutions, or with axiomatized general and common sense knowledge. The
results show that fine-grained and consistent knowledge coming from diverse
sources is a necessary condition determining the correctness and traceability
