The Cord Approach to Extensible Concurrency Control
Database management systems (DBMSs) have been increasingly used for advanced application domains, such as software development environments, workflow management systems, computer-aided design and manufacturing, and managed healthcare. In these domains, the standard correctness model of serializability is often too restrictive. The authors introduce the notion of a concurrency control language (CCL) that allows a database application designer to specify concurrency control policies to tailor the behavior of a transaction manager. A well-crafted set of policies defines an extended transaction model. The necessary semantic information required by the CCL run-time engine is extracted from a task manager, a (logical) module by definition included in all advanced applications. This module stores task models that encode the semantic information about the transactions submitted to the DBMS. They have designed a rule-based CCL, called CORD, and have implemented a run-time engine that can be hooked to a conventional transaction manager to implement the sophisticated concurrency control required by advanced database applications. They present an architecture for systems based on CORD and describe how they integrated the CORD engine with the Exodus Storage Manager to implement altruistic locking
Semantic Search
The thesis describes a Semantic approach towards web search through a stand-alone Java application. An Ontology Web Language(OWL) model is used to build a knowledge database related to different types of Organisms. The goal is to guide the Google web search engine using this OWL model. In the rst approach towards Semantic web search, an inference engine called CLIPS is used and in the second aproach, the Protege-OWL API is used. The thesis goes in detail about the design, working and comparison of these two approaches. The thesis also deals with design approach for enhancement of the OWL model, once the Semantic web search is done through the Protege-OWL API. This is achieved using Natural Language Processing and Parsing technique. Examples and results of the search and enhancement part of the application are described in detail. Future research directions are indicated

Knowledge-infused and Consistent Complex Event Processing over Real-time and Persistent Streams
Emerging applications in Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems
(CPS) present novel challenges to Big Data platforms for performing online
analytics. Ubiquitous sensors from IoT deployments are able to generate data
streams at high velocity, that include information from a variety of domains,
and accumulate to large volumes on disk. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is
recognized as an important real-time computing paradigm for analyzing
continuous data streams. However, existing work on CEP is largely limited to
relational query processing, exposing two distinctive gaps for query
specification and execution: (1) infusing the relational query model with
higher level knowledge semantics, and (2) seamless query evaluation across
temporal spaces that span past, present and future events. These allow
accessible analytics over data streams having properties from different
disciplines, and help span the velocity (real-time) and volume (persistent)
dimensions. In this article, we introduce a Knowledge-infused CEP (X-CEP)
framework that provides domain-aware knowledge query constructs along with
temporal operators that allow end-to-end queries to span across real-time and
persistent streams. We translate this query model to efficient query execution
over online and offline data streams, proposing several optimizations to
mitigate the overheads introduced by evaluating semantic predicates and in
accessing high-volume historic data streams. The proposed X-CEP query model and
execution approaches are implemented in our prototype semantic CEP engine,
SCEPter. We validate our query model using domain-aware CEP queries from a
real-world Smart Power Grid application, and experimentally analyze the
benefits of our optimizations for executing these queries, using event streams

Highly focused document retrieval in aerospace engineering : user interaction design and evaluation
Purpose – This paper seeks to describe the preliminary studies (on both users and data), the design and evaluation of the K-Search system for searching legacy documents in aerospace engineering. Real-world reports of jet engine maintenance challenge the current indexing practice, while real users’ tasks require retrieving the information in the proper context. K-Search is currently in use in Rolls-Royce plc and has evolved to include other tools for knowledge capture and management.
Design/methodology/approach – Semantic Web techniques have been used to automatically extract information from the reports while maintaining the original context, allowing a more focused retrieval than with more traditional techniques. The paper combines semantic search with classical information retrieval to increase search effectiveness. An innovative user interface has been designed to take advantage of this hybrid search technique. The interface is designed to allow a flexible and
personal approach to searching legacy data.
Findings – The user evaluation showed that the system is effective and well received by users. It also shows that different people look at the same data in different ways and make different use of the same system depending on their individual needs, influenced by their job profile and personal attitude.
Research limitations/implications – This study focuses on a specific case of an enterprise working in aerospace engineering. Although the findings are likely to be shared with other engineering domains (e.g. mechanical, electronic), the study does not expand the evaluation to different settings.
Originality/value – The study shows how real context of use can provide new and unexpected challenges to researchers and how effective solutions can then be adopted and used in organizations.</p
Implementation and Deployment of a Library of the High-level Application Programming Interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)
The high-level API service is designed to support rapid development of thin web applications and mashups beyond the state of the art in GIS, while maintaining compatibility with existing tools and expectations. It provides a fully configurable API, while maintaining a separation of concerns between domain experts, service administrators and mashup developers. It adheres to REST and Linked Data principles, and provides a novel bridge between standards-based (OGC O&M) and Semantic Web approaches. This document discusses the background motivations for the HLAPI (including experiences gained from any previously implemented versions), before moving onto specific details of the final implementation, including configuration and deployment instructions, as well as a full tutorial to assist mashup developers with using the exposed observation data
