    Medical imaging analysis with artificial neural networks

    Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging

    Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping For 3d Model Optimization

    Three-dimensional computer models, especially geospatial architectural data sets, can be visualized in the same way humans experience the world, providing a realistic, interactive experience. Scene familiarization, architectural analysis, scientific visualization, and many other applications would benefit from finely detailed, high resolution, 3D models. Automated methods to construct these 3D models traditionally has produced data sets that are often low fidelity or inaccurate; otherwise, they are initially highly detailed, but are very labor and time intensive to construct. Such data sets are often not practical for common real-time usage and are not easily updated. This thesis proposes Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping (VRDM), a methodology that has been developed to address some of the limitations of existing approaches to model construction from images. Key components of VRDM are texture palettes, which enable variable and ultra-high resolution images to be easily composited; texture features, which allow image features to integrated as image or geometry, and have the ability to modify the geometric model structure to add detail. These components support a primary VRDM objective of facilitating model refinement with additional data. This can be done until the desired fidelity is achieved as practical limits of infinite detail are approached. Texture Levels, the third component, enable real-time interaction with a very detailed model, along with the flexibility of having alternate pixel data for a given area of the model and this is achieved through extra dimensions. Together these techniques have been used to construct models that can contain GBs of imagery data

    Chemotaxis-based spatial self-organization algorithms

    Self-organization is a process that increases the order of a system as a result of local interactions among low-level, simple components, without the guidance of an outside source. Spatial self-organization is a process in which shapes and structures emerge at a global level from collective movements of low level shape primitives. Spatial self-organization is a stochastic process, and the outcome of the aggregation cannot necessarily be guaranteed. Despite the inherent ambiguity, self-organizing complex systems arise everywhere in nature. Motivated by the ability of living cells to form specific shapes and structures, we develop two self-organizing systems towards the ultimate goal of directing the spatial self-organizing process. We first develop a self-sorting system composed of a mixture of cells. The system consistently produces a sorted structure. We then extend the sorting system to a general shape formation system. To do so, we introduce morphogenetic primitives (MP), defined as software agents, which enable self-organizing shape formation of user-defined structures through a chemotaxis paradigm. One challenge that arises from the shape formation process is that the process may form two or more stable final configurations. In order to direct the self-organizing process, we find a way to characterize the macroscopic configuration of the MP swarm. We demonstrate that statistical moments of the primitives' locations can successfully capture the macroscopic structure of the aggregated shape. We do so by predicting the final configurations produced by our spatial self-organization system at an early stage in the process using features based on the statistical moments. At the next stage, we focus on developing a technique to control the outcome of bifurcating aggregations. We identify thresholds of the moments and generate biased initial conditions whose statistical moments meet the thresholds. By starting simulations with biased, random initial configurations, we successfully control the aggregation for a number of swarms produced by the agent-based shape formation system. This thesis demonstrates that chemotaxis can be used as a paradigm to create an agent- based spatial self-organization system.     A Review of Wavelet Based Fingerprint Image Retrieval

    A digital image is composed of pixels and information about brightness of image and RGB triples are used to encode color information. Image retrieval problem encountered when searching and retrieving images that is relevant to a user’s request from a database. In Content based image retrieval, input goes in the form of an image. In these images, different features are extracted and then the other images from database are retrieved accordingly. Biometric distinguishes the people by their physical or behavioral qualities. Fingerprints are viewed as a standout amongst the most solid for human distinguishment because of their uniqueness and ingenuity. To retrieve fingerprint images on the basis of their textural features,by using different wavelets. From the input fingerprint image, first of all center point area is selected and then its textural features are extracted and stored in database. When a query image comes then again its center point is selected and then its texture feature are extracted. Then these features are matched for similarity and then resultant image is displayed.     Towards adaptive multi-robot systems: self-organization and self-adaptation

The reason for this is that system designers are not able to fully specify the system during specification and development and before it is being deployed. Natural swarm systems enjoy similar characteristics, yet, being self-adaptive and being able to self-organize, these systems show beneficial emergent behaviour. Similar concepts can be extremely helpful for artificial systems, especially when it comes to multi-robot scenarios, which require such solution in order to be applicable to highly uncertain real world application. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview over state-of-the-art solutions in emergent systems, self-organization, self-adaptation, and robotics. We discuss these approaches in the light of a framework for multi-robot systems and identify similarities, differences missing links and open gaps that have to be addressed in order to make this framework possible
