    Real-Time Fault Diagnosis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive System

    Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have gained massive popularity in industrial applications such as electric vehicles, robotic systems, and offshore industries due to their merits of efficiency, power density, and controllability. PMSMs working in such applications are constantly exposed to electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses, resulting in different faults such as electrical, mechanical, and magnetic faults. These faults may lead to efficiency reduction, excessive heat, and even catastrophic system breakdown if not diagnosed in time. Therefore, developing methods for real-time condition monitoring and detection of faults at early stages can substantially lower maintenance costs, downtime of the system, and productivity loss. In this dissertation, condition monitoring and detection of the three most common faults in PMSMs and drive systems, namely inter-turn short circuit, demagnetization, and sensor faults are studied. First, modeling and detection of inter-turn short circuit fault is investigated by proposing one FEM-based model, and one analytical model. In these two models, efforts are made to extract either fault indicators or adjustments for being used in combination with more complex detection methods. Subsequently, a systematic fault diagnosis of PMSM and drive system containing multiple faults based on structural analysis is presented. After implementing structural analysis and obtaining the redundant part of the PMSM and drive system, several sequential residuals are designed and implemented based on the fault terms that appear in each of the redundant sets to detect and isolate the studied faults which are applied at different time intervals. Finally, real-time detection of faults in PMSMs and drive systems by using a powerful statistical signal-processing detector such as generalized likelihood ratio test is investigated. By using generalized likelihood ratio test, a threshold was obtained based on choosing the probability of a false alarm and the probability of detection for each detector based on which decision was made to indicate the presence of the studied faults. To improve the detection and recovery delay time, a recursive cumulative GLRT with an adaptive threshold algorithm is implemented. As a result, a more processed fault indicator is achieved by this recursive algorithm that is compared to an arbitrary threshold, and a decision is made in real-time performance. The experimental results show that the statistical detector is able to efficiently detect all the unexpected faults in the presence of unknown noise and without experiencing any false alarm, proving the effectiveness of this diagnostic approach.publishedVersio

    Real-Time Detection of Incipient Inter-Turn Short Circuit and Sensor Faults in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives Based on Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test and Structural Analysis

    This paper presents a robust model-based technique to detect multiple faults in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), namely inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) and encoder faults. The proposed model is based on a structural analysis, which uses the dynamic mathematical model of a PMSM in an abc frame to evaluate the system’s structural model in matrix form. The just-determined and over-determined parts of the system are separated by a Dulmage–Mendelsohn decomposition tool. Subsequently, the analytical redundant relations obtained using the over-determined part of the system are used to form smaller redundant testable sub-models based on the number of defined fault terms. Furthermore, four structured residuals are designed based on the acquired redundant sub-models to detect measurement faults in the encoder and ITSC faults, which are applied in different levels of each phase winding. The effectiveness of the proposed detection method is validated by an in-house test setup of an inverter-fed PMSM, where ITSC and encoder faults are applied to the system in different time intervals using controllable relays. Finally, a statistical detector, namely a generalized likelihood ratio test algorithm, is implemented in the decision-making diagnostic system resulting in the ability to detect ITSC faults as small as one single short-circuited turn out of 102, i.e., when less than 1% of the PMSM phase winding is short-circuited.publishedVersio

    Fault detection and isolation in a networked multi-vehicle unmanned system

    Recent years have witnessed a strong interest and intensive research activities in the area of networks of autonomous unmanned vehicles such as spacecraft formation flight, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, automated highway systems and multiple mobile robots. The envisaged networked architecture can provide surpassing performance capabilities and enhanced reliability; however, it requires extending the traditional theories of control, estimation and Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI). One of the many challenges for these systems is development of autonomous cooperative control which can maintain the group behavior and mission performance in the presence of undesirable events such as failures in the vehicles. In order to achieve this goal, the team should have the capability to detect and isolate vehicles faults and reconfigure the cooperative control algorithms to compensate for them. This dissertation deals with the design and development of fault detection and isolation algorithms for a network of unmanned vehicles. Addressing this problem is the main step towards the design of autonomous fault tolerant cooperative control of network of unmanned systems. We first formulate the FDI problem by considering ideal communication channels among the vehicles and solve this problem corresponding to three different architectures, namely centralized, decentralized, and semi-decentralized. The necessary and sufficient solvability conditions for each architecture are also derived based on geometric FDI approach. The effects of large environmental disturbances are subsequently taken into account in the design of FDI algorithms and robust hybrid FDI schemes for both linear and nonlinear systems are developed. Our proposed robust FDI algorithms are applied to a network of unmanned vehicles as well as Almost-Lighter-Than-Air-Vehicle (ALTAV). The effects of communication channels on fault detection and isolation performance are then investigated. A packet erasure channel model is considered for incorporating stochastic packet dropout of communication channels. Combining vehicle dynamics and communication links yields a discrete-time Markovian Jump System (MJS) mathematical model representation. This motivates development of a geometric FDI framework for both discrete-time and continuous-time Markovian jump systems. Our proposed FDI algorithm is then applied to a formation flight of satellites and a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) helicopter problem. Finally, we investigate the problem of fault detection and isolation for time-delay systems as well as linear impulsive systems. The main motivation behind considering these two problems is that our developed geometric framework for Markovian jump systems can readily be applied to other class of systems. Broad classes of time-delay systems, namely, retarded, neutral, distributed and stochastic time-delay systems are investigated in this dissertation and a robust FDI algorithm is developed for each class of these systems. Moreover, it is shown that our proposed FDI algorithms for retarded and stochastic time-delay systems can potentially be applied in an integrated design of FDI/controller for a network of unmanned vehicles. Necessary and sufficient conditions for solvability of the fundamental problem of residual generation for linear impulsive systems are derived to conclude this dissertation

    Achieving High Renewable Energy Integration in Smart Grids with Machine Learning

    The integration of high levels of renewable energy into smart grids is crucial for achieving a sustainable and efficient energy infrastructure. However, this integration presents significant technical and operational challenges due to the intermittent nature and inherent uncertainty of renewable energy sources (RES). Therefore, the energy storage system (ESS) has always been bound to renewable energy, and its charge and discharge control has become an important part of the integration. The addition of RES and ESS comes with their complex control, communication, and monitor capabilities, which also makes the grid more vulnerable to attacks, brings new challenges to the cybersecurity. A large number of works have been devoted to the optimization integration of the RES and ESS system to the traditional grid, along with combining the ESS scheduling control with the traditional Optimal Power Flow (OPF) control. Cybersecurity problem focusing on the RES integrated grid has also gradually aroused researchers’ interest. In recent years, machine learning techniques have emerged in different research field including optimizing renewable energy integration in smart grids. Reinforcement learning (RL), which trains agent to interact with the environment by making sequential decisions to maximize the expected future reward, is used as an optimization tool. This dissertation explores the application of RL algorithms and models to achieve high renewable energy integration in smart grids. The research questions focus on the effectiveness, benefits of renewable energy integration to individual consumers and electricity utilities, applying machine learning techniques in optimizing the behaviors of the ESS and the generators and other components in the grid. The objectives of this research are to investigate the current algorithms of renewable energy integration in smart grids, explore RL algorithms, develop novel RL-based models and algorithms for optimization control and cybersecurity, evaluate their performance through simulations on real-world data set, and provide practical recommendations for implementation. The research approach includes a comprehensive literature review to understand the challenges and opportunities associated with renewable energy integration. Various optimization algorithms, such as linear programming (LP), dynamic programming (DP) and various RL algorithms, such as Deep Q-Learning (DQN) and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), are applied to solve problems during renewable energy integration in smart grids. Simulation studies on real-world data, including different types of loads, solar and wind energy profiles, are used to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed machine learning techniques. The results provide insights into the capabilities and limitations of machine learning in solving the optimization problems in the power system. Compared with traditional optimization tools, the RL approach has the advantage of real-time implementation, with the cost being the training time and unguaranteed model performance. Recommendations and guidelines for practical implementation of RL algorithms on power systems are provided in the appendix

    Adaptive Estimation and Detection Techniques with Applications

    Hybrid systems have been identified as one of the main directions in control theory and attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their huge diversity of engineering applications. Multiplemodel (MM) estimation is the state-of-the-art approach to many hybrid estimation problems. Existing MM methods with fixed structure usually perform well for problems that can be handled by a small set of models. However, their performance is limited when the required number of models to achieve a satisfactory accuracy is large due to time evolution of the true mode over a large continuous space. In this research, variable-structure multiple model (VSMM) estimation was investigated, further developed and evaluated. A fundamental solution for on-line adaptation of model sets was developed as well as several VSMM algorithms. These algorithms have been successfully applied to the fields of fault detection and identification as well as target tracking in this thesis. In particular, an integrated framework to detect, identify and estimate failures is developed based on the VSMM. It can handle sequential failures and multiple failures by sensors or actuators. Fault detection and target maneuver detection can be formulated as change-point detection problems in statistics. It is of great importance to have the quickest detection of such mode changes in a hybrid system. Traditional maneuver detectors based on simplistic models are not optimal and are computationally demanding due to the requirement of batch processing. In this presentation, a general sequential testing procedure is proposed for maneuver detection based on advanced sequential tests. It uses a likelihood marginalization technique to cope with the difficulty that the target accelerations are unknown. The approach essentially utilizes a priori information about the accelerations in typical tracking engagements and thus allows improved detection performance. The proposed approach is applicable to change-point detection problems under similar formulation, such as fault detection

    Fault Diagnosis Via Univariate Frequency Analysis Monitoring: A Novel Technique Applied to a Simulated Integrated Drive Generator

    The purpose of this research was to develop a fault detection and diagnostic method that would be able to detect and isolate seeded faults in data that was generated from a simulated integrated drive generator. The approach to the solution for this problem is summarized below. A novel approach for the detection and diagnoses of an anomaly due the occurrence of a fault within a system has been developed. This innovative technique uses specific characteristics of the frequency spectrum of a univariate signal to monitor system health for abnormal behavior due to previously characterized component failure. A fault detection and diagnostic scheme was developed that used dual heteroassociative kernel regression models. The first of these empirical models estimates selected features from the analytical redundant spectrum characteristic profile of the exciter current using power demand, a stressor, placed on the system as input query. The predicted spectrum features were compared to the actual characteristic features, which resulted in the generation of a residual signal. This signal was then analyzed in order to determine if they were the result of normal system disturbances or a predefined fault. If a fault was detected, the residual signal was passed to the second model, which isolated, and given enough information, identified the specific component of components causing the anomaly. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the capability to detect, isolate, and identify a system anomaly. As demonstrated, the monitoring of the frequency spectrum of a single variable can provide adequate indication of equipment health. With the availability of the appropriate data, as in the first case, it is possible for the development of three-layer detection and diagnostic systems that provides fault detection, isolation, and identification. A three-layer detection and diagnostic system is essential in the development of more advance health monitoring and prognostic systems. Despite some shortcomings in the simulated data made available for this work, this method is believed to be applicable to data that more realistically captures real-world relationships, including sensor noise and faults that grow with time

    A Survey on Deep Learning Role in Distribution Automation System : A New Collaborative Learning-to-Learning (L2L) Concept

    This paper focuses on a powerful and comprehensive overview of Deep Learning (DL) techniques on Distribution Automation System (DAS) applications to provide a complete viewpoint of modern power systems. DAS is a crucial approach to increasing the reliability, quality, and management of distribution networks. Due to the importance of development and sustainable security of DAS, the use of DL data-driven technology has grown significantly. DL techniques have blossomed rapidly, and have been widely applied in several fields of distribution systems. DL techniques are suitable for dynamic, decision-making, and uncertain environments such as DAS. This survey has provided a comprehensive review of the existing research into DL techniques on DAS applications, including fault detection and classification, load and energy forecasting, demand response, energy market forecasting, cyber security, network reconfiguration, and voltage control. Comparative results based on evaluation criteria are also addressed in this manuscript. According to the discussion and results of studies, the use and development of hybrid methods of DL with other methods to enhance and optimize the configuration of the techniques are highlighted. In all matters, hybrid structures accomplish better than single methods as hybrid approaches hold the benefit of several methods to construct a precise performance. Due to this, a new smart technique called Learning-to-learning (L2L) based DL is proposed that can enhance and improve the efficiency, reliability, and security of DAS. The proposed model follows several stages that link different DL algorithms to solve modern power system problems. To show the effectiveness and merit of the L2L based on the proposed framework, it has been tested on a modified reconfigurable IEEE 32 test system. This method has been implemented on several DAS applications that the results prove the decline of mean square errors by approximately 12% compared to conventional LSTM and GRU methods in terms of prediction fields.©2022 Authors.
