    Segmentation of Oil Spills on Side-Looking Airborne Radar imagery with Autoencoders

    In this work, we use deep neural autoencoders to segment oil spills from Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) imagery. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been much exploited for ocean surface monitoring, especially for oil pollution detection, but few approaches in the literature use SLAR. Our sensor consists of two SAR antennas mounted on an aircraft, enabling a quicker response than satellite sensors for emergency services when an oil spill occurs. Experiments on TERMA radar were carried out to detect oil spills on Spanish coasts using deep selectional autoencoders and RED-nets (very deep Residual Encoder-Decoder Networks). Different configurations of these networks were evaluated and the best topology significantly outperformed previous approaches, correctly detecting 100% of the spills and obtaining an F 1 score of 93.01% at the pixel level. The proposed autoencoders perform accurately in SLAR imagery that has artifacts and noise caused by the aircraft maneuvers, in different weather conditions and with the presence of look-alikes due to natural phenomena such as shoals of fish and seaweed

    Segmentation of SLAR Imagery with Convolutional LSTM Selectional AutoEncoders

    We present a method to detect maritime oil spills from Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) sensors mounted on aircraft in order to enable a quick response of emergency services when an oil spill occurs. The proposed approach introduces a new type of neural architecture named Convolutional Long Short Term Memory Selectional AutoEncoders (CMSAE) which allows the simultaneous segmentation of multiple classes such as coast, oil spill and ships. Unlike previous works using full SLAR images, in this work only a few scanlines from the beam-scanning of radar are needed to perform the detection. The main objective is to develop a method that performs accurate segmentation using only the current and previous sensor information, in order to return a real-time response during the flight. The proposed architecture uses a series of CMSAE networks to process in parallel each of the objectives defined as different classes. The output of these networks are given to a machine learning classifier to perform the final detection. Results show that the proposed approach can reliably detect oil spills and other maritime objects in SLAR sequences, outperforming the accuracy of previous state-of-the-art methods and with a response time of only 0.76 s.This research was funded by both the Spanish Government’s Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, European Regional Development Funds and Babcock MCS Spain through the RTC-2014-1863-8 and INAER4-14Y(IDI-20141234) projects

    Hydrocarbon quantification using neural networks and deep learning based hyperspectral unmixing

    Hydrocarbon (HC) spills are a global issue, which can seriously impact human life and the environment, therefore early identification and remedial measures taken at an early stage are important. Thus, current research efforts aim at remotely quantifying incipient quantities of HC mixed with soils. The increased spectral and spatial resolution of hyperspectral sensors has opened ground-breaking perspectives in many industries including remote inspection of large areas and the environment. The use of subpixel detection algorithms, and in particular the use of the mixture models, has been identified as a future advance that needs to be incorporated in remote sensing. However, there are some challenging tasks since the spectral signatures of the targets of interest may not be immediately available. Moreover, real time processing and analysis is required to support fast decision-making. Progressing in this direction, this thesis pioneers and researches novel methodologies for HC quantification capable of exceeding the limitations of existing systems in terms of reduced cost and processing time with improved accuracy. Therefore the goal of this research is to develop, implement and test different methods for improving HC detection and quantification using spectral unmixing and machine learning. An efficient hybrid switch method employing neural networks and hyperspectral is proposed and investigated. This robust method switches between state of the art hyperspectral unmixing linear and nonlinear models, respectively. This procedure is well suited for the quantification of small quantities of substances within a pixel with high accuracy as the most appropriate model is employed. Central to the proposed approach is a novel method for extracting parameters to characterise the non-linearity of the data. These parameters are fed into a feedforward neural network which decides in a pixel by pixel fashion which model is more suitable. The quantification process is fully automated by applying further classification techniques to the acquired hyperspectral images. A deep learning neural network model is designed for the quantification of HC quantities mixed with soils. A three-term backpropagation algorithm with dropout is proposed to avoid overfitting and reduce the computational complexity of the model. The above methods have been evaluated using classical repository datasets from the literature and a laboratory controlled dataset. For that, an experimental procedure has been designed to produce a labelled dataset. The data was obtained by mixing and homogenizing different soil types with HC substances, respectively and measuring the reflectance with a hyperspectral sensor. Findings from the research study reveal that the two proposed models have high performance, they are suitable for the detection and quantification of HC mixed with soils, and surpass existing methods. Improvements in sensitivity, accuracy, computational time are achieved. Thus, the proposed approaches can be used to detect HC spills at an early stage in order to mitigate significant pollution from the spill areas

    Precise Ship Location With CNN Filter Selection From Optical Aerial Images

    This paper presents a method that can be used for the efficient detection of small maritime objects. The proposed method employs aerial images in the visible spectrum as inputs to train a categorical convolutional neural network for the classification of ships. A subset of those filters that make the greatest contribution to the classification of the target class is selected from the inner layers of the CNN. The gradients with respect to the input image are then calculated on these filters, which are subsequently normalized and combined. Thresholding and a morphological operation are then applied in order to eventually obtain the localization. One of the advantages of the proposed approach with regard to previous object detection methods is that it is only required to label a few images with bounding boxes of the targets to be trained for localization. The method was evaluated with an extended version of the MASATI (MAritime SATellite Imagery) dataset. This new dataset has more than 7 000 images, 4 157 of which contain ships.     Advanced machine learning algorithms for Canadian wetland mapping using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and optical imagery

    Wetlands are complex land cover ecosystems that represent a wide range of biophysical conditions. They are one of the most productive ecosystems and provide several important environmental functionalities. As such, wetland mapping and monitoring using cost- and time-efficient approaches are of great interest for sustainable management and resource assessment. In this regard, satellite remote sensing data are greatly beneficial, as they capture a synoptic and multi-temporal view of landscapes. The ability to extract useful information from satellite imagery greatly affects the accuracy and reliability of the final products. This is of particular concern for mapping complex land cover ecosystems, such as wetlands, where complex, heterogeneous, and fragmented landscape results in similar backscatter/spectral signatures of land cover classes in satellite images. Accordingly, the overarching purpose of this thesis is to contribute to existing methodologies of wetland classification by proposing and developing several new techniques based on advanced remote sensing tools and optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Specifically, the importance of employing an efficient speckle reduction method for polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image processing is discussed and a new speckle reduction technique is proposed. Two novel techniques are also introduced for improving the accuracy of wetland classification. In particular, a new hierarchical classification algorithm using multi-frequency SAR data is proposed that discriminates wetland classes in three steps depending on their complexity and similarity. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method is advantageous for mapping complex land cover ecosystems compared to single stream classification approaches, which have been extensively used in the literature. Furthermore, a new feature weighting approach is proposed based on the statistical and physical characteristics of PolSAR data to improve the discrimination capability of input features prior to incorporating them into the classification scheme. This study also demonstrates the transferability of existing classification algorithms, which have been developed based on RADARSAT-2 imagery, to compact polarimetry SAR data that will be collected by the upcoming RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM). The capability of several well-known deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures currently employed in computer vision is first introduced in this thesis for classification of wetland complexes using multispectral remote sensing data. Finally, this research results in the first provincial-scale wetland inventory maps of Newfoundland and Labrador using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing resources and open access Earth Observation (EO) collected by the Copernicus Sentinel missions. Overall, the methodologies proposed in this thesis address fundamental limitations/challenges of wetland mapping using remote sensing data, which have been ignored in the literature. These challenges include the backscattering/spectrally similar signature of wetland classes, insufficient classification accuracy of wetland classes, and limitations of wetland mapping on large scales. In addition to the capabilities of the proposed methods for mapping wetland complexes, the use of these developed techniques for classifying other complex land cover types beyond wetlands, such as sea ice and crop ecosystems, offers a potential avenue for further research

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Meets Deep Learning

    This reprint focuses on the application of the combination of synthetic aperture radars and depth learning technology. It aims to further promote the development of SAR image intelligent interpretation technology. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an important active microwave imaging sensor, whose all-day and all-weather working capacity give it an important place in the remote sensing community. Since the United States launched the first SAR satellite, SAR has received much attention in the remote sensing community, e.g., in geological exploration, topographic mapping, disaster forecast, and traffic monitoring. It is valuable and meaningful, therefore, to study SAR-based remote sensing applications. In recent years, deep learning represented by convolution neural networks has promoted significant progress in the computer vision community, e.g., in face recognition, the driverless field and Internet of things (IoT). Deep learning can enable computational models with multiple processing layers to learn data representations with multiple-level abstractions. This can greatly improve the performance of various applications. This reprint provides a platform for researchers to handle the above significant challenges and present their innovative and cutting-edge research results when applying deep learning to SAR in various manuscript types, e.g., articles, letters, reviews and technical reports

    El siguiente proyecto tiene como objetivo mostrar los protocolos de actuación que realiza la sociedad de salvamento y seguridad marítima ante una situación de derrame por hidrocarburo en el mar procediendo de un buque. Para su investigación se han estudiado tres casos prácticos producidos durante los años 2003, 2016 y 2022 entre las aguas de algeciras y gibraltar. en cada caso práctico se observará un resumen del caso, una descripción detallada del buque a tratar, una descripción elaborada de sucesos, plan de acción y, además, se ha añadido el parte meteorológico en aquellos casos en los que se ha observado que han estado afectados de manera directa o indirecta por algún factor. una vez finalizado el estudio se concluye con los datos más relevantes seguido de un plan de propuestas. dado que se ha buscado que los buques sean totalmente distintos, se analizará una gabarra, un remolcador y un buque granelero, no se establece un patrón común más que la zona en la que ocurren los accidentes. la hipótesis que se plantea es si los medios, sistemas y protocolos que actualmente se emplean se han ido renovando en función de los años o se siguen manteniendo las mismas actuaciones

    The data concept behind the data: From metadata models and labelling schemes towards a generic spectral library

    Spectral libraries play a major role in imaging spectroscopy. They are commonly used to store end-member and spectrally pure material spectra, which are primarily used for mapping or unmixing purposes. However, the development of spectral libraries is time consuming and usually sensor and site dependent. Spectral libraries are therefore often developed, used and tailored only for a specific case study and only for one sensor. Multi-sensor and multi-site use of spectral libraries is difficult and requires technical effort for adaptation, transformation, and data harmonization steps. Especially the huge amount of urban material specifications and its spectral variations hamper the setup of a complete spectral library consisting of all available urban material spectra. By a combined use of different urban spectral libraries, besides the improvement of spectral inter- and intra-class variability, missing material spectra could be considered with respect to a multi-sensor/ -site use. Publicly available spectral libraries mostly lack the metadata information that is essential for describing spectra acquisition and sampling background, and can serve to some extent as a measure of quality and reliability of the spectra and the entire library itself. In the GenLib project, a concept for a generic, multi-site and multi-sensor usable spectral library for image spectra on the urban focus was developed. This presentation will introduce a 1) unified, easy-to-understand hierarchical labeling scheme combined with 2) a comprehensive metadata concept that is 3) implemented in the SPECCHIO spectral information system to promote the setup and usability of a generic urban spectral library (GUSL). The labelling scheme was developed to ensure the translation of individual spectral libraries with their own labelling schemes and their usually varying level of details into the GUSL framework. It is based on a modified version of the EAGLE classification concept by combining land use, land cover, land characteristics and spectral characteristics. The metadata concept consists of 59 mandatory and optional attributes that are intended to specify the spatial context, spectral library information, references, accessibility, calibration, preprocessing steps, and spectra specific information describing library spectra implemented in the GUSL. It was developed on the basis of existing metadata concepts and was subject of an expert survey. The metadata concept and the labelling scheme are implemented in the spectral information system SPECCHIO, which is used for sharing and holding GUSL spectra. It allows easy implementation of spectra as well as their specification with the proposed metadata information to extend the GUSL. Therefore, the proposed data model represents a first fundamental step towards a generic usable and continuously expandable spectral library for urban areas. The metadata concept and the labelling scheme also build the basis for the necessary adaptation and transformation steps of the GUSL in order to use it entirely or in excerpts for further multi-site and multi-sensor applications
