Power Side Channels in Security ICs: Hardware Countermeasures
Power side-channel attacks are a very effective cryptanalysis technique that
can infer secret keys of security ICs by monitoring the power consumption.
Since the emergence of practical attacks in the late 90s, they have been a
major threat to many cryptographic-equipped devices including smart cards,
encrypted FPGA designs, and mobile phones. Designers and manufacturers of
cryptographic devices have in response developed various countermeasures for
protection. Attacking methods have also evolved to counteract resistant
implementations. This paper reviews foundational power analysis attack
techniques and examines a variety of hardware design mitigations. The aim is to
highlight exposed vulnerabilities in hardware-based countermeasures for future
more secure implementations
AES-CBC Software Execution Optimization
With the proliferation of high-speed wireless networking, the necessity for
efficient, robust and secure encryption modes is ever increasing. But,
cryptography is primarily a computationally intensive process. This paper
investigates the performance and efficiency of IEEE 802.11i approved Advanced
Encryption Standard (AES)-Rijndael ciphering/deciphering software in Cipher
Block Chaining (CBC) mode. Simulations are used to analyse the speed, resource
consumption and robustness of AES-CBC to investigate its viability for image
encryption usage on common low power devices. The detailed results presented in
this paper provide a basis for performance estimation of AES cryptosystems
implemented on wireless devices. The use of optimized AES-CBC software
implementation gives a superior encryption speed performance by 12 - 30%, but
at the cost of twice more memory for code size.Comment: 8 pages, IEEE 200
Comprehensive Designs of Innovate Secure Hardware Devices against Machine Learning Attacks and Power Analysis Attacks
Hardware security is an innovate subject oriented from growing demands of cybersecurity and new information vulnerabilities from physical leakages on hardware devices. However, the mainstream of hardware manufacturing industry is still taking benefits of products and the performance of chips as priority, restricting the design of hardware secure countermeasures under a compromise to a finite expense of overheads. Consider the development trend of hardware industries and state-of-the-art researches of architecture designs, this dissertation proposes some new physical unclonable function (PUF) designs as countermeasures to side-channel attacks (SCA) and machine learning (ML) attacks simultaneously. Except for the joint consideration of hardware and software vulnerabilities, those designs also take efficiencies and overhead problems into consideration, making the new-style of PUF more possible to be merged into current chips as well as their design concepts. While the growth of artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques dominate the researching trends of Internet of things (IoT) industry, some mainstream architectures of neural networks are implemented as hypothetical attacking model, whose results are used as references for further lifting the performance, the security level, and the efficiency in lateral studies. In addition, a study of implementation of neural networks on hardware designs is proposed, this realized the initial attempt to introduce AI techniques to the designs of voltage regulation (VR). All aforementioned works are demonstrated to be of robustness to threats with corresponding power attack tests or ML attack tests. Some conceptional models are proposed in the last of the dissertation as future plans so as to realize secure on-chip ML models and hardware countermeasures to hybrid threats
TSKY: a dependable middleware solution for data privacy using public storage clouds
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaThis dissertation aims to take advantage of the virtues offered by data storage cloud based systems on the Internet, proposing a solution that avoids security issues by combining different providers’ solutions in a vision of a cloud-of-clouds storage and computing. The solution, TSKY System (or Trusted Sky), is implemented as a middleware system, featuring a set of components designed to establish and to enhance conditions for security, privacy, reliability and availability of data, with these conditions being secured and verifiable by the end-user, independently of each provider. These components, implement cryptographic tools, including threshold and homomorphic cryptographic schemes, combined with encryption, replication, and dynamic indexing mecha-nisms. The solution allows data management and distribution functions over data kept in different storage clouds, not necessarily trusted, improving and ensuring resilience and security guarantees against Byzantine faults and at-tacks. The generic approach of the TSKY system model and its implemented services are evaluated in the context of a Trusted Email Repository System (TSKY-TMS System). The TSKY-TMS system is a prototype that uses the base TSKY middleware services to store mailboxes and email Messages in a cloud-of-clouds
