The death of television has been long predicated in the digital age, yet it remains a powerful mediator of live sports. This article focuses on football and examines the implications for the sport of the move to an age of screens and content. These may be large screens in public places or in our homes or those at work or smaller screens carried in the palm of our hands, but what we use them for, how content gets onto those screens, and the implications for sports and sports fans remain compelling questions in the digital age. The article argues that through reflecting on major media sport events such as the FIFA World Cup, we see patterns of continuity in the role played by television as well as evidence of change
Atmosphere-like turbulence generation with surface-etched phase-screens
We built and characterized an optical system that emulates the optical
characteristics of an 8m-class telescope like the Very Large Telescope. The
system contains rotating glass phase-screens to generate realistic
atmosphere-like optical turbulence, as needed for testing multi-conjugate
adaptive optics systems. In this paper we present an investigation of the
statistical properties of two phase-screens etched on glass-plate surfaces,
obtained from Silios Technologies. Those etched screens are highly transmissive
(above 85%) from 0.45 to 2.5 microns. From direct imaging, their Fried
parameter r0 values (0.43+-0.04 mm and 0.81+-0.03 mm, respectively, at 0.633
microns) agree with the expectation to within 10%. This is also confirmed by a
comparison of measured and expected Zernike coefficient variances. Overall, we
find that those screens are quite reproducible, allowing sub-millimetre r0
values, which were difficult to achieve in the past. We conclude that the
telescope emulator and phase-screens form a powerful atmospheric turbulence

Holography in General Space-times
We provide a background-independent formulation of the holographic principle.
It permits the construction of embedded hypersurfaces (screens) on which the
entire bulk information can be stored at a density of no more than one bit per
Planck area. Screens are constructed explicitly for AdS, Minkowski, and de
Sitter spaces with and without black holes, and for cosmological solutions. The
properties of screens provide clues about the character of a manifestly

Fabrication and characteristics of experimental radiographic amplifier screens
The fabrication process and transfer characteristics for solid state radiographic image transducers (radiographic amplifier screens) are described. These screens are for use in realtime nondestructive evaluation procedures that require large format radiographic images with contrast and resolution capabilities unavailable with conventional fluoroscopic screens. The screens are suitable for in-motion, on-line radiographic inspection by means of closed circuit television.
