Simulation of Wireless Networked Control Systems
Embedded systems are becoming increasingly networked and are deployed in application areas that require close interaction with their physical environment. Examples include distributed mobile agents and wireless sensor/actuator networks. The complexity of these applications make co-simulation a necessary tool during system development. This paper presents a simulation environment that facilitates simulation of computer nodes and communication networks interacting with the continuous-time dynamics of the real world. Features of the simulator include interrupt handling, task scheduling, wired and wireless communication, local clocks, dynamic voltage scaling, and battery-driven operation. Two simulation case studies are presented: a simple communication scenario and a mobile robot soccer game
Network-aware design-space exploration of a power-efficient embedded application
The paper presents the design and multi-parameter optimization of a networked embedded application for the health-care domain. Several hardware, software, and application parameters, such as clock frequency, sensor sampling rate, data packet rate, are tuned at design- and run-time according to application specifications and operating conditions to optimize hardware requirements, packet loss, power consumption. Experimental results show that further power efficiency can be achieved by considering also communication aspects during design space exploratio
Energy-Optimal Scheduling in Low Duty Cycle Sensor Networks
Energy consumption of a wireless sensor node mainly depends on the amount of
time the node spends in each of the high power active (e.g., transmit, receive)
and low power sleep modes. It has been well established that in order to
prolong node's lifetime the duty-cycle of the node should be low. However, low
power sleep modes usually have low current draw but high energy cost while
switching to the active mode with a higher current draw. In this work, we
investigate a MaxWeightlike opportunistic sleep-active scheduling algorithm
that takes into account time- varying channel and traffic conditions. We show
that our algorithm is energy optimal in the sense that the proposed ESS
algorithm can achieve an energy consumption which is arbitrarily close to the
global minimum solution. Simulation studies are provided to confirm the
theoretical results
Embedding of Virtual Network Requests over Static Wireless Multihop Networks
Network virtualization is a technology of running multiple heterogeneous
network architecture on a shared substrate network. One of the crucial
components in network virtualization is virtual network embedding, which
provides a way to allocate physical network resources (CPU and link bandwidth)
to virtual network requests. Despite significant research efforts on virtual
network embedding in wired and cellular networks, little attention has been
paid to that in wireless multi-hop networks, which is becoming more important
due to its rapid growth and the need to share these networks among different
business sectors and users. In this paper, we first study the root causes of
new challenges of virtual network embedding in wireless multi-hop networks, and
propose a new embedding algorithm that efficiently uses the resources of the
physical substrate network. We examine our algorithm's performance through
extensive simulations under various scenarios. Due to lack of competitive
algorithms, we compare the proposed algorithm to five other algorithms, mainly
borrowed from wired embedding or artificially made by us, partially with or
without the key algorithmic ideas to assess their impacts.Comment: 22 page
