    On the verification of parametric and real-time systems

    2009 - 2010Parametric and Real-Time Systems play a central role in the theory underlying the Verification and Synthesis problems. Real-time systems are present everywhere and are used in safety critical applications, such as flight controllers. Failures in such systems can be very expensive and even life threatening and, moreover, they are quite hard to design and verify. For these reasons, the development of formal methods for the modeling and analysis of safety-critical systems is an active area of computer science research. The standard formalism used to specify the wished behaviour of a realtime system is temporal logic. Traditional temporal logics, such as linear temporal logic (LTL), allow only qualitative assertions about the temporal ordering of events. However, in several circumstances, for assessing the efficiency of the system being modeled, it may be useful to have additional quantitative guarantees. An extension of LTL with a real-time semantics is given by the Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL), where changes of truth values happen according to a splitting of the line of non-negative reals into intervals. However, even with quantitative temporal logics, we would actually like to find out what quantitative bounds can be placed on the logic operators. In this thesis we face with the above problem proposing a parametric extension of MITL, that is the parametric metric interval temporal logic (PMITL), which allows to introduce parameters within intervals . For this logic, we study decision problems which are the analogous of satisfiability, validity and model-checking problems for non-parametric temporal logic. PMITL turns out to be decidable and we show that, when parameter valuations give only non-singular sets, the considered problems are all decidable, EXPSPACE-complete, and have the same complexity as in MITL. Moreover, we investigate the computational complexity of these problems for natural fragments of PMITL, and show that in meaningful fragments of the logic they are PSPACE-complete. We also consider a remarkable problem expressed by queries where the values that each parameter may assume are either existentially or universally quantified. We solve this problem in several cases and we propose an algorithm in EXPSPACE. Another interesting application of the temporal logic is when it is used to express specification of concurrent programs, where programs and properties are formalized as regular languages of infinite words. In this case, the verification problem (whether the program satisfies the specification) corresponds to solve the language inclusion problem. In the second part of this thesis we consider the Synthesis problem for realtime systems, investigating the applicability of automata constructions that avoid determinization for solving the language inclusion problem and the realizability problem for real-time logics.     Parametric Linear Dynamic Logic

    We introduce Parametric Linear Dynamic Logic (PLDL), which extends Linear Dynamic Logic (LDL) by temporal operators equipped with parameters that bound their scope. LDL was proposed as an extension of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) that is able to express all ω\omega-regular specifications while still maintaining many of LTL's desirable properties like an intuitive syntax and a translation into non-deterministic B\"uchi automata of exponential size. But LDL lacks capabilities to express timing constraints. By adding parameterized operators to LDL, we obtain a logic that is able to express all ω\omega-regular properties and that subsumes parameterized extensions of LTL like Parametric LTL and PROMPT-LTL. Our main technical contribution is a translation of PLDL formulas into non-deterministic B\"uchi word automata of exponential size via alternating automata. This yields a PSPACE model checking algorithm and a realizability algorithm with doubly-exponential running time. Furthermore, we give tight upper and lower bounds on optimal parameter values for both problems.     Symbolic reactive synthesis

    In this thesis, we develop symbolic algorithms for the synthesis of reactive systems. Synthesis, that is the task of deriving correct-by-construction implementations from formal specifications, has the potential to eliminate the need for the manual—and error-prone—programming task. The synthesis problem can be formulated as an infinite two-player game, where the system player has the objective to satisfy the specification against all possible actions of the environment player. The standard synthesis algorithms represent the underlying synthesis game explicitly and, thus, they scale poorly with respect to the size of the specification. We provide an algorithmic framework to solve the synthesis problem symbolically. In contrast to the standard approaches, we use a succinct representation of the synthesis game which leads to improved scalability in terms of the symbolically represented parameters. Our algorithm reduces the synthesis game to the satisfiability problem of quantified Boolean formulas (QBF) and dependency quantified Boolean formulas (DQBF). In the encodings, we use propositional quantification to succinctly represent different parts of the implementation, such as the state space and the transition function. We develop highly optimized satisfiability algorithms for QBF and DQBF. Based on a counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR) loop, our algorithms avoid an exponential blow-up by using the structure of the underlying symbolic encodings. Further, we extend the solving algorithms to extract certificates in the form of Boolean functions, from which we construct implementations for the synthesis problem. Our empirical evaluation shows that our symbolic approach significantly outperforms previous explicit synthesis algorithms with respect to scalability and solution quality.In dieser Dissertation werden symbolische Algorithmen für die Synthese von reaktiven Systemen entwickelt. Synthese, d.h. die Aufgabe, aus formalen Spezifikationen korrekte Implementierungen abzuleiten, hat das Potenzial, die manuelle und fehleranfällige Programmierung überflüssig zu machen. Das Syntheseproblem kann als unendliches Zweispielerspiel verstanden werden, bei dem der Systemspieler das Ziel hat, die Spezifikation gegen alle möglichen Handlungen des Umgebungsspielers zu erfüllen. Die Standardsynthesealgorithmen stellen das zugrunde liegende Synthesespiel explizit dar und skalieren daher schlecht in Bezug auf die Größe der Spezifikation. Diese Arbeit präsentiert einen algorithmischen Ansatz, der das Syntheseproblem symbolisch löst. Im Gegensatz zu den Standardansätzen wird eine kompakte Darstellung des Synthesespiels verwendet, die zu einer verbesserten Skalierbarkeit der symbolisch dargestellten Parameter führt. Der Algorithmus reduziert das Synthesespiel auf das Erfüllbarkeitsproblem von quantifizierten booleschen Formeln (QBF) und abhängigkeitsquantifizierten booleschen Formeln (DQBF). In den Kodierungen verwenden wir propositionale Quantifizierung, um verschiedene Teile der Implementierung, wie den Zustandsraum und die Übergangsfunktion, kompakt darzustellen. Wir entwickeln hochoptimierte Erfüllbarkeitsalgorithmen für QBF und DQBF. Basierend auf einer gegenbeispielgeführten Abstraktionsverfeinerungsschleife (CEGAR) vermeiden diese Algorithmen ein exponentielles Blow-up, indem sie die Struktur der zugrunde liegenden symbolischen Kodierungen verwenden. Weiterhin werden die Lösungsalgorithmen um Zertifikate in Form von booleschen Funktionen erweitert, aus denen Implementierungen für das Syntheseproblem abgeleitet werden. Unsere empirische Auswertung zeigt, dass unser symbolischer Ansatz die bisherigen expliziten Synthesealgorithmen in Bezug auf Skalierbarkeit und Lösungsqualität deutlich übertrifft

    Two-Stage Technique for LTLf Synthesis Under LTL Assumptions

    In synthesis, assumption are constraints on the environments that rule out certain environment behaviors. A key observation is that even if we consider system with LTLf goals on finite traces, assumptions need to be expressed considering infinite traces, using LTL on infinite traces, since the decision to stop the trace is controlled by the agent. To solve synthesis of LTLf goals under LTL assumptions, we could reduce the problem to LTL synthesis. Unfortunately, while synthesis in LTLf and in LTL have the same worst-case complexity (both are 2EXPTIME-complete), the algorithms available for LTL synthesis are much harder in practice than those for LTLf synthesis. Recently, it has been shown that in basic forms of fairness and stability assumptions we can avoid such a detour to LTL and keep the simplicity of LTLf synthesis. In this paper, we generalize these results and show how to effectively handle any kind of LTL assumptions. Specifically, we devise a two-stage technique for solving LTLf under general LTL assumptions and show empirically that this technique performs much better than standard LTL synthesis

    A multi-paradigm language for reactive synthesis

    This paper proposes a language for describing reactive synthesis problems that integrates imperative and declarative elements. The semantics is defined in terms of two-player turn-based infinite games with full information. Currently, synthesis tools accept linear temporal logic (LTL) as input, but this description is less structured and does not facilitate the expression of sequential constraints. This motivates the use of a structured programming language to specify synthesis problems. Transition systems and guarded commands serve as imperative constructs, expressed in a syntax based on that of the modeling language Promela. The syntax allows defining which player controls data and control flow, and separating a program into assumptions and guarantees. These notions are necessary for input to game solvers. The integration of imperative and declarative paradigms allows using the paradigm that is most appropriate for expressing each requirement. The declarative part is expressed in the LTL fragment of generalized reactivity(1), which admits efficient synthesis algorithms, extended with past LTL. The implementation translates Promela to input for the Slugs synthesizer and is written in Python. The AMBA AHB bus case study is revisited and synthesized efficiently, identifying the need to reorder binary decision diagrams during strategy construction, in order to prevent the exponential blowup observed in previous work.Comment: In Proceedings SYNT 2015, arXiv:1602.0078

    Experimental Aspects of Synthesis

    We discuss the problem of experimentally evaluating linear-time temporal logic (LTL) synthesis tools for reactive systems. We first survey previous such work for the currently publicly available synthesis tools, and then draw conclusions by deriving useful schemes for future such evaluations. In particular, we explain why previous tools have incompatible scopes and semantics and provide a framework that reduces the impact of this problem for future experimental comparisons of such tools. Furthermore, we discuss which difficulties the complex workflows that begin to appear in modern synthesis tools induce on experimental evaluations and give answers to the question how convincing such evaluations can still be performed in such a setting.Comment: In Proceedings iWIGP 2011, arXiv:1102.374
