    A comparative study of three simulation languages as applied to manufacturing facility simulation

    A study was conducted to compare and evaluate the three prominent simulation languages; GPSS/H, SLAM, and SIMSCRIPT II.5. The main objective of the research was to identify the most appropriate language among the three as applied to manufacturing facility simulation. The most important qualitative features of the three languages were discussed and compared based on a pre-defined set of criteria. The performances of the three languages were evaluated based on another set of criteria. A hypothetical model of a manufacturing facility was used for the evaluation. An experiment was designed to measure the performances of the languages under different conditions. Three model configurations and five different simulation periods were considered in the design of the experiment. Intensive statistical analyses were conducted to analyze the results that were collected from the various trials of the simulation models;In all the cases that were considered in the experiment, GPSS was found to be the most appropriate language among the three. In comparison of period lengths and scale of model, it compiled and executed faster, it used less CPU and memory time, and the rates of change in execution, CPU, and memory times variables were much less than those of the other two languages due to increases in the simulation period and to enlargements in the model size

    Distributed object-oriented discrete event simulation

    This paper presents criteria for an \u27ideal\u27 simulation language, compares four traditional simulation languages to this ideal and concludes that an object-oriented approach to simulation comes closer to the ideal than the traditional procedural approach. It also examines how the object-oriented approach can be very beneficial for distributing a simulation problem among several machines. A distributed object-oriented package is described and a manufacturing example written and explained using this package

    In a period of continuous change in global business environment, organizations, large and small, are finding it increasingly difficult to deal with, and adjust to the demands for such change. Simulation is a powerful tool for allowing designers imagines new systems and enabling them to both quantify and observe behavior. Currently the market offers a variety of simulation software packages. Some are less expensive than others. Some are generic and can be used in a wide variety of application areas while others are more specific. Some have powerful features for modeling while others provide only basic features. Modeling approaches and strategies are different for different packages. Companies are seeking advice about the desirable features of software for manufacturing simulation, depending on the purpose of its use. Because of this, the importance of an adequate approach to simulation software evaluation and comparison is apparent. This paper presents a critical evaluation of four widely used manufacturing simulators: NX-IDEAS, Star-CD, Micro Saint Sharp and ProModel. Following a review of research into simulation software evaluation, an evaluation and comparison of the above simulators is performed. This paper illustrates and assesses the role the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) played in simulation software evaluation and selection. The main purpose of this evaluation and comparison is to discover the suitability of certain types of simulators for particular purposes

    SIMULATION OF A MULTIPROCESSOR COMPUTER SYSTEM

    The introduction of computers and software engineering in telephone switching systems has dictated the need for powerful design aids for such complex systems. Among these design aids simulators - real-time environment simulators and flat-level simulators - have been found particularly useful in stored program controlled switching systems design and evaluation. However, both types of simulators suffer from certain disadvantages. An alternative methodology to the simulation of stored program controlled switching systems is proposed in this research. The methodology is based on the development of a process-based multilevel hierarchically structured software simulator. This methodology eliminates the disadvantages of environment and flat-level simulators. It enables the modelling of the system in a 1 to 1 transformation process retaining the sub-systems interfaces and, hence, making it easier to see the resemblance between the model and modelled system and to incorporate design modifications and/or additions in the simulator. This methodology has been applied in building a simulation package for the System X family of exchanges. The Processor Utility Sub-system used to control the exchanges is first simulated, verified and validated. The application sub-systems models are then added one level higher_, resulting in an open-ended simulator having sub-systems models at different levels of detail and capable of simulating any member of the System X family of exchanges. The viability of the methodology is demonstrated by conducting experiments to tune the real-time operating system and by simulating a particular exchange - The Digital Main Network Switching Centre - in order to determine its performance characteristics.The General Electric Company Ltd, GEC Hirst Research Cent, Wemble

    Construction time-cost model in Croatia

    The paper deals with the applicability of the time-cost model for calculating the sustainable construction time for building projects in Croatia. In this model the time is expressed as a function of money in the project, while the specific constants K and B need to be determined. These constants depend on economic characteristics of the country or a larger area, therefore had to be separately calculated for a region with similar economic characteristics. The modelling of the constants was performed for two groups of building projects - the roads and residential and office multi-storey buildings. The obtained results have been analyzed and compared to the corresponding results from abroad

    Simulation is one of the most important tools to analyse, design, and operate complex processes and systems. Simulation allows us to make a 'trial and error' in order to understand a system and describe a problem. Therefore, it is of great interest to use simulation easily and practically. The advent of parallel processors and languages help simulation studies. A recent simulation trend is distributed simulation which may be called discrete- event simulation, because distributed simulation has a great potential for the speed-up. This thesis will survey discrete-event simulation and examine one particular algorithm. It will first survey simulation in general and secondly, distributed simulation. Distributed simulation has broadly two mechanisms: conservative and optimistic. The treatment of time in these mechanisms is different, we will look into both mechanisms. Finally, we will examine the conservative mechanism on a network of transputers using Occam. We will conclude with the result of the experiments and the perspective of distributed simulation
