The Boston University Photonics Center annual report 2007-2008
This repository item contains an annual report that summarizes activities of the Boston University Photonics Center in the 2007-2008 academic year. The report provides quantitative and descriptive information regarding photonics programs in education, interdisciplinary research, business innovation, and technology development. The Boston University Photonics Center (BUPC) is an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, scholarship, innovation, and technology development associated with practical uses of light.The following report summarizes activities of the Boston University Photonics Center (BUPC) during the period
July 2007 through June 2008. These activities span the Center’s complementary missions in education, research,
technology development, and commercialization.
Faculty research activity reached an all time high when evaluated by the accepted metrics of external funding,
scholarly publications, honors and awards. The Center’s educational programs were bolstered by two summer
programs hosting more than 40 undergraduate interns, and by the renewal of a competitive graduate fellowship
program sponsoring ten BUPC graduate fellowships. In technology development, the prototype RedOwl sniper
detection system pioneered by Center faculty, staff, and industry partners was field-tested by the US Department
of Defense. RedOwl has been officially transitioned to industry partners for further commercial development along
with the soldier wearable Enhanced Acoustic Gear for Locating Enemies (EAGLE) system. Three defense/security
prototypes were developed by BUPC to address critical national defense needs in the past year. Four faculty
development projects were supported in collaboration with the Army Research Laboratory’s Sensors and Electron
Devices Directorate (ARL-SEDD) to fill the technology pipeline for our future defense-related prototyping efforts.
The Center’s business incubator is at capacity with various technology companies ranging from photonics to life
sciences. The incubator provides a stimulating intellectual environment, outstanding facilities, and professional
business expertise to participating companies

Drone Delivery of CBNRECy – DEW Weapons: Emerging Threats of Mini-Weapons of Mass Destruction and Disruption (WMDD) is our sixth textbook in a series covering the world of UASs and UUVs. Our textbook takes on a whole new purview for UAS / CUAS/ UUV (drones) – how they can be used to deploy Weapons of Mass Destruction and Deception against CBRNE and civilian targets of opportunity. We are concerned with the future use of these inexpensive devices and their availability to maleficent actors. Our work suggests that UASs in air and underwater UUVs will be the future of military and civilian terrorist operations. In accordance with congressional mandates cited in the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 and the Technology Utilization Act of 1962, NASA was directed to encourage greater use of the Agency's knowledge by providing a link between the NASA research community and those who might use the research for commercial or industrial products. For more than 40 years, NASA has nurtured partnerships with the private sector to facilitate the transfer of NASA-developed technologies. The benefits of these partnerships have reached throughout the economy and around the globe, as the resulting commercial products contributed to the development of services and technologies in the fields of health and medicine, transportation, public safety, consumer goods, environmental resources, computer technology, and industry. Since 1976, NASA Spinoff has profiled more than 1,500 of the most compelling of these technologies, annually highlighting the best and brightest of partnerships and innovations. Building on this dynamic history, NASA partnerships with the private sector continue to seek avenues by which technological achievements and innovations gleaned among the stars can be brought down to benefit our lives on Earth. Interactive Fiction in Cinematic Virtual Reality: Epistemology, Creation and Evaluation
This dissertation presents the Interactive Fiction in Cinematic Virtual Reality (IFcVR), an interactive digital narrative (IDN) that brings together the cinematic virtual reality (cVR) and the creation of virtual environments through 360\ub0 video within an interactive fiction (IF) structure. This work is structured in three components: an epistemological approach to this kind of narrative and media
hybrid; the creation process of IFcVR, from development to postproduction; and user evaluation of IFcVR. In order to set the foundations for the creation of interactive VR fiction films, I dissect the IFcVR by investigating the aesthetics, narratological and interactive notions that converge and diverge in it, proposing a medium-conscious narratology for this kind of artefact. This analysis led to
the production of an IFcVR functional prototype: \u201cZENA\u201d, the first interactive VR film shot in Genoa. ZENA\u2019s creation process is reported proposing some guidelines for interactive and immersive film-makers. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the IFcVR as an entertaining narrative form and a vehicle for diverse types of messages, this study also proposes a methodology to measure User Experience (UX) on IFcVR. The full evaluation protocol gathers both qualitative and quantitative data through ad hoc instruments. The proposed protocol is illustrated through its pilot application on ZENA. Aeronautics and Space Report of the President - Fiscal Year 2010 Activities
The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 directed the annual Aeronautics and Space Report to include a "comprehensive description of the programmed activities and the accomplishments of all agencies of the United States in the field of aeronautics and space activities during the preceding calendar year." In recent years, the reports have been prepared on a fiscal-year basis, consistent with the budgetary period now used in programs of the Federal Government. Situated grounding and understanding of structured low-resource expert data
Conversational agents are becoming more widespread, varying from social to goaloriented to multi-modal dialogue systems. However, for systems with both visual
and spatial requirements, such as situated robot planning, developing accurate goaloriented dialogue systems can be extremely challenging, especially in dynamic environments, such as underwater or first responders. Furthermore, training data-driven
algorithms in these domains is challenging due to the esoteric nature of the interaction, which requires expert input. We derive solutions for creating a collaborative
multi-modal conversational agent for setting high-level mission goals. We experiment with state-of-the-art deep learning models and techniques and create a new
data-driven method (MAPERT) that is capable of processing language instructions
by grounding the necessary elements using various types of input data (vision from
a map, text and other metadata). The results show that, depending on the task,
the accuracy of data-driven systems can vary dramatically depending on the type
of metadata and the attention mechanisms that are used. Finally, we are dealing
with low-resource expert data and this inspired the use of the Continual Learning
and Human In The Loop methodology with encouraging results

The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power: Bridging Songs with Literary Texts to Enhance Students’ Interpretative Skills
Sometimes students struggle to interpret literary texts because some of these texts do not lend themselves to the deduction of the interpretative processes with which they are familiar, but the same is not true when students pull interpretations from songs. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations. When a novel is bridged or paired with a song, interpretation can also be derived by examining different perspectives, characterizations, personal connections, and life experiences. Exploring emotional connections as well as signs and symbolism can also enable interpretation. Another way to deduce interpretation, according to the students, is to locate a reoccurring issue or thread in a song and transfer the analysis from the song to the novel. However, although a few students might not use songs to interpret literary texts, they might still be able to recognize that the possibility exists to grasp meaning that way
