    Mining User Behavior in Social Environments

    The growth of the Web 2.0 has brought to a widespread use of social media systems and to an increasing number of active users. This phenomenon implies that each user interacts with too many users and is overwhelmed by a huge amount of content, leading to the well know “social interaction overload” problem. In order to address this problem several research communities study Social Recommender Systems, which are information filtering systems that operate in the social media domain and aim at suggesting to the users items that are supposed to be interesting for them. Social Recommender Systems usually filter content by exploiting the social graph or by mining the user content. Since the social domain is characterized by a continuous and quick growth of the the amount of content and users, both these approaches face some problems to produce accurate and up-to-date recommendations. This PhD thesis proposes some social recommendation approaches based on the mining of the user behavior, i.e., on the exploitation of the activity of the users in social environments, in order to produce accurate and up-to-date recommendations

    Context dependent fuzzy modelling and its applications

    Fuzzy rule-based systems (FRBS) use the principle of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic to describe vague and imprecise statements and provide a facility to express the behaviours of the system with a human-understandable language. Fuzzy information, once defined by a fuzzy system, is fixed regardless of the circumstances and therefore makes it very difficult to capture the effect of context on the meaning of the fuzzy terms. While efforts have been made to integrate contextual information into the representation of fuzzy sets, it remains the case that often the context model is very restrictive and/or problem specific. The work reported in this thesis is our attempt to create a practical frame work to integrate contextual information into the representation of fuzzy sets so as to improve the interpretability as well as the accuracy of the fuzzy system. Throughout this thesis, we have looked at the capability of the proposed context dependent fuzzy sets as a stand alone as well as in combination with other methods in various application scenarios ranging from time series forecasting to complicated car racing control systems. In all of the applications, the highly competitive performance nature of our approach has proven its effectiveness and efficiency compared with existing techniques in the literature

    Novel Bidirectional Body - Machine Interface to Control Upper Limb Prosthesis

    Objective. The journey of a bionic prosthetic user is characterized by the opportunities and limitations involved in adopting a device (the prosthesis) that should enable activities of daily living (ADL). Within this context, experiencing a bionic hand as a functional (and, possibly, embodied) limb constitutes the premise for mitigating the risk of its abandonment through the continuous use of the device. To achieve such a result, different aspects must be considered for making the artificial limb an effective support for carrying out ADLs. Among them, intuitive and robust control is fundamental to improving amputees’ quality of life using upper limb prostheses. Still, as artificial proprioception is essential to perceive the prosthesis movement without constant visual attention, a good control framework may not be enough to restore practical functionality to the limb. To overcome this, bidirectional communication between the user and the prosthesis has been recently introduced and is a requirement of utmost importance in developing prosthetic hands. Indeed, closing the control loop between the user and a prosthesis by providing artificial sensory feedback is a fundamental step towards the complete restoration of the lost sensory-motor functions. Within my PhD work, I proposed the development of a more controllable and sensitive human-like hand prosthesis, i.e., the Hannes prosthetic hand, to improve its usability and effectiveness. Approach. To achieve the objectives of this thesis work, I developed a modular and scalable software and firmware architecture to control the Hannes prosthetic multi-Degree of Freedom (DoF) system and to fit all users’ needs (hand aperture, wrist rotation, and wrist flexion in different combinations). On top of this, I developed several Pattern Recognition (PR) algorithms to translate electromyographic (EMG) activity into complex movements. However, stability and repeatability were still unmet requirements in multi-DoF upper limb systems; hence, I started by investigating different strategies to produce a more robust control. To do this, EMG signals were collected from trans-radial amputees using an array of up to six sensors placed over the skin. Secondly, I developed a vibrotactile system to implement haptic feedback to restore proprioception and create a bidirectional connection between the user and the prosthesis. Similarly, I implemented an object stiffness detection to restore tactile sensation able to connect the user with the external word. This closed-loop control between EMG and vibration feedback is essential to implementing a Bidirectional Body - Machine Interface to impact amputees’ daily life strongly. For each of these three activities: (i) implementation of robust pattern recognition control algorithms, (ii) restoration of proprioception, and (iii) restoration of the feeling of the grasped object's stiffness, I performed a study where data from healthy subjects and amputees was collected, in order to demonstrate the efficacy and usability of my implementations. In each study, I evaluated both the algorithms and the subjects’ ability to use the prosthesis by means of the F1Score parameter (offline) and the Target Achievement Control test-TAC (online). With this test, I analyzed the error rate, path efficiency, and time efficiency in completing different tasks. Main results. Among the several tested methods for Pattern Recognition, the Non-Linear Logistic Regression (NLR) resulted to be the best algorithm in terms of F1Score (99%, robustness), whereas the minimum number of electrodes needed for its functioning was determined to be 4 in the conducted offline analyses. Further, I demonstrated that its low computational burden allowed its implementation and integration on a microcontroller running at a sampling frequency of 300Hz (efficiency). Finally, the online implementation allowed the subject to simultaneously control the Hannes prosthesis DoFs, in a bioinspired and human-like way. In addition, I performed further tests with the same NLR-based control by endowing it with closed-loop proprioceptive feedback. In this scenario, the results achieved during the TAC test obtained an error rate of 15% and a path efficiency of 60% in experiments where no sources of information were available (no visual and no audio feedback). Such results demonstrated an improvement in the controllability of the system with an impact on user experience. Significance. The obtained results confirmed the hypothesis of improving robustness and efficiency of a prosthetic control thanks to of the implemented closed-loop approach. The bidirectional communication between the user and the prosthesis is capable to restore the loss of sensory functionality, with promising implications on direct translation in the clinical practice

    Privacy-preserving human mobility and activity modelling

    The exponential proliferation of digital trends and worldwide responses to the COVID-19 pandemic thrust the world into digitalization and interconnectedness, pushing increasingly new technologies/devices/applications into the market. More and more intimate data of users are collected for positive analysis purposes of improving living well-being but shared with/without the user's consent, emphasizing the importance of making human mobility and activity models inclusive, private, and fair. In this thesis, I develop and implement advanced methods/algorithms to model human mobility and activity in terms of temporal-context dynamics, multi-occupancy impacts, privacy protection, and fair analysis. The following research questions have been thoroughly investigated: i) whether the temporal information integrated into the deep learning networks can improve the prediction accuracy in both predicting the next activity and its timing; ii) how is the trade-off between cost and performance when optimizing the sensor network for multiple-occupancy smart homes; iii) whether the malicious purposes such as user re-identification in human mobility modelling could be mitigated by adversarial learning; iv) whether the fairness implications of mobility models and whether privacy-preserving techniques perform equally for different groups of users. To answer these research questions, I develop different architectures to model human activity and mobility. I first clarify the temporal-context dynamics in human activity modelling and achieve better prediction accuracy by appropriately using the temporal information. I then design a framework MoSen to simulate the interaction dynamics among residents and intelligent environments and generate an effective sensor network strategy. To relieve users' privacy concerns, I design Mo-PAE and show that the privacy of mobility traces attains decent protection at the marginal utility cost. Last but not least, I investigate the relations between fairness and privacy and conclude that while the privacy-aware model guarantees group fairness, it violates the individual fairness criteria.Open Acces

    WiFi-Based Human Activity Recognition Using Attention-Based BiLSTM

    Recently, significant efforts have been made to explore human activity recognition (HAR) techniques that use information gathered by existing indoor wireless infrastructures through WiFi signals without demanding the monitored subject to carry a dedicated device. The key intuition is that different activities introduce different multi-paths in WiFi signals and generate different patterns in the time series of channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we propose and evaluate a full pipeline for a CSI-based human activity recognition framework for 12 activities in three different spatial environments using two deep learning models: ABiLSTM and CNN-ABiLSTM. Evaluation experiments have demonstrated that the proposed models outperform state-of-the-art models. Also, the experiments show that the proposed models can be applied to other environments with different configurations, albeit with some caveats. The proposed ABiLSTM model achieves an overall accuracy of 94.03%, 91.96%, and 92.59% across the 3 target environments. While the proposed CNN-ABiLSTM model reaches an accuracy of 98.54%, 94.25% and 95.09% across those same environments

    A Statistical Investigation into Factors Affecting Results of One Day International Cricket Matches

    The effect of playing “home” or “away” and many other factors, such as batting first or second, winning or losing the toss, have been hypothesised as influencing the outcome of major cricket matches. Anecdotally, it has often been noted that Subcontinental sides (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) tend to perform much better on the Subcontinent than away from it, whilst England do better in Australia during cooler, damper Australian Summers than during hotter, drier ones. In this paper, focusing on results of men’s One Day International (ODI) matches involving England, we investigate the extent to which a number of factors – including playing home or away (or the continent of the venue), batting or fielding first, winning or losing the toss, the weather conditions during the game, the condition of the pitch, and the strength of each team’s top batting and bowling resources – influence the outcome of matches. By employing a variety of Statistical techniques, we find that the continent of the venue does appear to be a major factor affecting the result, but winning the toss does not. We then use the factors identified as significant in an attempt to build a Binary Logistic Regression Model that will estimate the probability of England winning at various stages of a game. Finally, we use this model to predict the results of some England ODI games not used in training the model
