A New Approach for Quality Management in Pervasive Computing Environments
This paper provides an extension of MDA called Context-aware Quality Model
Driven Architecture (CQ-MDA) which can be used for quality control in pervasive
computing environments. The proposed CQ-MDA approach based on
ContextualArchRQMM (Contextual ARCHitecture Quality Requirement MetaModel),
being an extension to the MDA, allows for considering quality and
resources-awareness while conducting the design process. The contributions of
this paper are a meta-model for architecture quality control of context-aware
applications and a model driven approach to separate architecture concerns from
context and quality concerns and to configure reconfigurable software
architectures of distributed systems. To demonstrate the utility of our
approach, we use a videoconference system.Comment: 10 pages, 10 Figures, Oral Presentation in ECSA 201
The Chameleon Architecture for Streaming DSP Applications
We focus on architectures for streaming DSP applications such as wireless baseband processing and image processing. We aim at a single generic architecture that is capable of dealing with different DSP applications. This architecture has to be energy efficient and fault tolerant. We introduce a heterogeneous tiled architecture and present the details of a domain-specific reconfigurable tile processor called Montium. This reconfigurable processor has a small footprint (1.8 mm in a 130 nm process), is power efficient and exploits the locality of reference principle. Reconfiguring the device is very fast, for example, loading the coefficients for a 200 tap FIR filter is done within 80 clock cycles. The tiles on the tiled architecture are connected to a Network-on-Chip (NoC) via a network interface (NI). Two NoCs have been developed: a packet-switched and a circuit-switched version. Both provide two types of services: guaranteed throughput (GT) and best effort (BE). For both NoCs estimates of power consumption are presented. The NI synchronizes data transfers, configures and starts/stops the tile processor. For dynamically mapping applications onto the tiled architecture, we introduce a run-time mapping tool
A Survey of Phase Classification Techniques for Characterizing Variable Application Behavior
Adaptable computing is an increasingly important paradigm that specializes
system resources to variable application requirements, environmental
conditions, or user requirements. Adapting computing resources to variable
application requirements (or application phases) is otherwise known as
phase-based optimization. Phase-based optimization takes advantage of
application phases, or execution intervals of an application, that behave
similarly, to enable effective and beneficial adaptability. In order for
phase-based optimization to be effective, the phases must first be classified
to determine when application phases begin and end, and ensure that system
resources are accurately specialized. In this paper, we present a survey of
phase classification techniques that have been proposed to exploit the
advantages of adaptable computing through phase-based optimization. We focus on
recent techniques and classify these techniques with respect to several factors
in order to highlight their similarities and differences. We divide the
techniques by their major defining characteristics---online/offline and
serial/parallel. In addition, we discuss other characteristics such as
prediction and detection techniques, the characteristics used for prediction,
interval type, etc. We also identify gaps in the state-of-the-art and discuss
future research directions to enable and fully exploit the benefits of
adaptable computing.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems

Context Aware Adaptable Applications - A global approach
Actual applications (mostly component based) requirements cannot be expressed without a ubiquitous and mobile part for end-users as well as for M2M applications (Machine to Machine). Such an evolution implies context management in order to evaluate the consequences of the mobility and corresponding mechanisms to adapt or to be adapted to the new environment. Applications are then qualified as context aware applications. This first part of this paper presents an overview of context and its management by application adaptation. This part starts by a definition and proposes a model for the context. It also presents various techniques to adapt applications to the context: from self-adaptation to supervised approached. The second part is an overview of architectures for adaptable applications. It focuses on platforms based solutions and shows information flows between application, platform and context. Finally it makes a synthesis proposition with a platform for adaptable context-aware applications called Kalimucho. Then we present implementations tools for software components and a dataflow models in order to implement the Kalimucho platform
Federated Embedded Systems – a review of the literature in related fields
This report is concerned with the vision of smart interconnected objects, a vision that has attracted much attention lately. In this paper, embedded, interconnected, open, and heterogeneous control systems are in focus, formally referred to as Federated Embedded Systems. To place FES into a context, a review of some related research directions is presented. This review includes such concepts as systems of systems, cyber-physical systems, ubiquitous
computing, internet of things, and multi-agent systems. Interestingly, the reviewed fields seem to overlap with each other in an increasing number of ways
A unified radio control architecture for prototyping adaptive wireless protocols
Experimental optimization of wireless protocols and validation of novel solutions is often problematic, due to limited configuration space present in commercial wireless interfaces as well as complexity of monolithic driver implementation on SDR-based experimentation platforms. To overcome these limitations a novel software architecture is proposed, called WiSHFUL, devised to allow: i) maximal exploitation of radio functionalities available in current radio chips, and ii) clean separation between the logic for optimizing the radio protocols (i.e. radio control) and the definition of these protocols
Heterogeneous component interactions: Sensors integration into multimedia applications
Resource-constrained embedded and mobile devices are becoming increasingly
common. Since few years, some mobile and ubiquitous devices such as wireless
sensor, able to be aware of their physical environment, appeared. Such devices
enable proposing applications which adapt to user's need according the context
evolution. It implies the collaboration of sensors and software components
which differ on their nature and their communication mechanisms. This paper
proposes a unified component model in order to easily design applications based
on software components and sensors without taking care of their nature. Then it
presents a state of the art of communication problems linked to heterogeneous
components and proposes an interaction mechanism which ensures information
exchanges between wireless sensors and software components
