Biomechanics of the fibrillar adhesive system in insects
Many animals are able to scale smooth surfaces using adhesive structures on their feet. These organs are either soft pads with a relatively smooth surface or dense arrays of microscopic adhesive hairs with both designs having independently evolved in diverse taxa of arthropods and vertebrates. Biological adhesive pads out-perform conventional adhesives in many respects, making them important models for biomimetics. Hairy pads have attracted particular attention, because it has become feasible to fabricate similar synthetic microstructures. Nevertheless, the detailed performance and functional properties have not been characterised for any natural fibrillar adhesive system, and many fundamental aspects are still not understood. The aim of this thesis was therefore to investigate the fibrillar adhesive system of leaf beetles as a model.
To investigate the functional implications of hairy pad design, the attachment performance between hairy pads of the leaf beetle Gastrophysa viridula and smooth pads of stick insects (Carausius morosus) was compared. Adhesive and frictional stresses were found to be similar in smooth and hairy pads, inconsistent with contact splitting theory, which predicts higher adhesive stresses for fibrillar adhesives. Hairy pads showed a greater direction-dependence of friction forces than smooth pads, confirming the importance of the asymmetric design of individual setae for effortless detachment. Experiments with contaminating particles also showed that hairy pads removed contamination more rapidly and efficiently than smooth pads. Self-cleaning ability had not been previously documented for adhesive organs of insects. To investigate to what extent the hairy system is able to compensate for surface roughness, whole-body attachment forces were measured for varying roughness levels. Attachment was reduced for all length scales of surface roughness, but in particular for asperity sizes smaller than the diameter of individual seta tips.
Leaf beetles possess adhesive pads on three tarsal segments, which vary in setal morphology. However, the functional implications of this variation are unknown. The mechanical and adhesive properties of individual pads were therefore tested and their use during climbing observed. Proximal pads were shown to be stiffer than distal pads, conferring stability during pushing. In contrast, the softer distal pads allowed better attachment to rough surfaces. Hence the morphological variation is explained by an effective division of labour between the pads. To investigate an extreme example of pushing in a hairy system, pad use was studied during jumping in flea beetles. The pushing forces needed during take-off were exclusively produced by the proximal pads, again confirming the division of labour. To characterise the effects of different hair morphologies and to understand how individual setae contribute to array and whole-animal performance, single hair forces were measured using a glass capillary cantilever. Male-specific discoidal hairs were shown to be both stiffer and more adhesive than pointed and spatula-tipped setae, likely affecting overall pad stability and attachment.
This thesis has shown that hairy pads are similar to smooth pads in the magnitude of adhesive stress supported yet outperform them in detachability and self-cleaning. It was also demonstrated that there are considerable differences in design and performance even within setal arrays of the same insect, indicating the limitations of general models of fibrillar adhesion and underlining the importance of specialised adaptations.Funded by research grants from the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Cambridge Isaac Newton Trust
A Dynamics and Stability Framework for Avian Jumping Take-off
Jumping take-off in birds is an explosive behaviour with the goal of
providing a rapid transition from ground to airborne locomotion. An effective
jump is predicated on the need to maintain dynamic stability through the
acceleration phase. The present study concerns understanding how birds retain
control of body attitude and trajectory during take-off. Cursory observation
suggests that stability is achieved with relatively little cost. However,
analysis of the problem shows that the stability margins during jumping are
actually very small and that stability considerations play a significant role
in selection of appropriate jumping kinematics. We use theoretical models to
understand stability in prehensile take-off (from a perch) and also in
non-prehensile take-off (from the ground). The primary instability is tipping,
defined as rotation of the centre of gravity about the ground contact point.
Tipping occurs when the centre of pressure falls outside the functional foot. A
contribution of the paper is the development of graphical tipping stability
margins for both centre of gravity location and acceleration angle. We show
that the nose-up angular acceleration extends stability bounds forward and is
hence helpful in achieving shallow take-offs. The stability margins are used to
interrogate simulated take-offs of real birds using published experimental
kinematic data from a guinea fowl (ground take-off) and a diamond dove (perch
take-off). For the guinea fowl the initial part of the jump is stable, however
simulations exhibit a stuttering instability not observed experimentally that
is probably due to absence of compliance in the idealised joints. The diamond
dove model confirms that the foot provides an active torque reaction during
take-off, extending the range of stable jump angles by around 45{\deg}.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures; supplementary material:

Impact of Different Developmental Instars on Locusta migratoria Jumping Performance
Ontogenetic locomotion research focuses on the evolution of locomotion behavior in different developmental stages of a species. Unlike vertebrates, ontogenetic locomotion in invertebrates is poorly investigated. Locusts represent an outstanding biological model to study this issue. They are hemimetabolous insects and have similar aspects and behaviors in different instars. This research is aimed at studying the jumping performance of Locusta migratoria over different developmental instars. Jumps of third instar, fourth instar, and adult L. migratoria were recorded through a high-speed camera. Data were analyzed to develop a simplified biomechanical model of the insect: the elastic joint of locust hind legs was simplified as a torsional spring located at the femur-tibiae joint as a semilunar process and based on an energetic approach involving both locomotion and geometrical data. A simplified mathematical model evaluated the performances of each tested jump. Results showed that longer hind leg length, higher elastic parameter, and longer takeoff time synergistically contribute to a greater velocity and energy storing/releasing in adult locusts, if compared to young instars; at the same time, they compensate possible decreases of the acceleration due to the mass increase. This finding also gives insights for advanced bioinspired jumping robot design
Towards a Comparative Measure for Legged Agility
We introduce an agility measure enabling the comparison of two very different leaping-from-rest transitions by two comparably powered but morphologically different legged robots. We use the measure to show that a flexible spine outperforms a rigid back in the leaping- from-rest task. The agility measure also sheds light on the source of this benefit: core actuation through a sufficiently powerful parallel elastic actuated spine outperforms a similar power budget applied either only to preload the spine or only to actuate the spine during the leap, as well as a rigid backed configuration of the identical machine

Finally, in the Bio-Inspired Analysis on A Mechanical System part, research contents on the control strategy of Surgical Assistant Robot, modeling of Underwater Thruster, and optimization of Humanoid Robot are introduced
Biologically inspired perching for aerial robots
2021 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are widely used for various civilian and military applications (e.g., surveillance, search, and monitoring, etc.); however, one critical problem they are facing is the limited airborne time (less than one hour) due to the low aerodynamic efficiency, low energy storage capability, and high energy consumption. To address this problem, mimicking biological flyers to perch onto objects (e.g., walls, power lines, or ceilings) will significantly extend MAVs' functioning time for surveillance or monitoring related tasks. Successful perching for aerial robots, however, is quite challenging as it requires a synergistic integration of mechanical and computational intelligence. Mechanical intelligence means mechanical mechanisms to passively damp out the impact between the robot and the perching object and robustly engage the robot to the perching objects. Computational intelligence means computation algorithms to estimate, plan, and control the robot's motion so that the robot can progressively reduce its speed and adjust its orientation to perch on the objects with a desired velocity and orientation. In this research, a framework for biologically inspired perching is investigated, focusing on both computational and mechanical intelligence. Computational intelligence includes vision-based state estimation and trajectory planning. Unlike traditional flight states such as position and velocity, we leverage a biologically inspired state called time-to-contact (TTC) that represents the remaining time to the perching object at the current flight velocity. A faster and more accurate estimation method based on consecutive images is proposed to estimate TTC. Then a trajectory is planned in TTC space to realize the faster perching while satisfying multiple flight and perching constraints, e.g., maximum velocity, maximum acceleration, and desired contact velocity. For mechanical intelligence, we design, develop, and analyze a novel compliant bistable gripper with two stable states. When the gripper is open, it can close passively by the contact force between the robot and the perching object, eliminating additional actuators or sensors. We also analyze the bistability of the gripper to guide and optimize the design of the gripper. At the end, a customized MAV platform of size 250 mm is designed to combine computational and mechanical intelligence. A Raspberry Pi is used as the onboard computer to do vision-based state estimation and control. Besides, a larger gripper is designed to make the MAV perch on a horizontal rod. Perching experiments using the designed trajectories perform well at activating the bistable gripper to perch while avoiding large impact force which may damage the gripper and the MAV. The research will enable robust perching of MAVs so that they can maintain a desired observation or resting position for long-duration inspection, surveillance, search, and rescue
Adaptive Locomotion: The Cylindabot Robot
Adaptive locomotion is an emerging field of robotics due to the complex interaction between the robot and its environment. Hybrid locomotion is where a robot has more than one mode of locomotion and potentially delivers the benefits of both, however, these advantages are often not quantified or applied to new scenarios. The classic approach is to design robots with a high number of degrees of freedom and a complex control system, whereas an intelligent morphology can simplify the problem and maintain capabilities. Cylindabot is designed to be a minimally actuated hybrid robot with strong terrain crossing capabilities. By limiting the number of motors, this reduces the robot's weight and means less reinforcement is needed for the physical frame or drive system. Cylindabot uses different drive directions to transform between using wheels or legs. Cylindabot is able to climb a slope of 32 degrees and a step ratio of 1.43 while only being driven by two motors. A physical prototype and simulation models show that adaptation is optimal for a range of terrain (slopes, steps, ridges and gaps). Cylindabot successfully adapts to a map environment where there are several routes to the target location. These results show that a hybrid robot can increase its terrain capabilities when changing how it moves and that this adaptation can be applied to wider environments. This is an important step to have hybrid robots being deployed to real situations
Robogami: A Fully Integrated Low-Profile Robotic Origami
Intelligent robotic systems that can react to unprogrammed tasks and unforeseen environmental changes require augmented "softness." Robogami, a low-profile origami robot, addresses intrinsic (material-wise) and extrinsic (mechanism-wise) softness with its multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) body driven by soft actuators. The unique hardware of the Robogami and its submillimeter thick construction enable diverse transformations as those achievable by the paper origami. The presented Robogami shows the first fully integrated version that has all the essential components including its controller within a thin sheet. Construction of this robot is possible via precise, repeatable, and low cost planar fabrication methods often reserved for microscale fabrications. In this research, we aim at expanding the capabilities of Robogamis by embedding bidirectional actuation, sensing, and control circuit. To assess the performance of the proposed sensors and actuators, we report on the performance of these components in a single module and in the four-legged crawler robot
