1999 Flight Mechanics Symposium
This conference publication includes papers and abstracts presented at the Flight Mechanics Symposium held on May 18-20, 1999. Sponsored by the Guidance, Navigation and Control Center of Goddard Space Flight Center, this symposium featured technical papers on a wide range of issues related to orbit-attitude prediction, determination, and control; attitude sensor calibration; attitude determination error analysis; attitude dynamics; and orbit decay and maneuver strategy. Government, industry, and the academic community participated in the preparation and presentation of these papers

The 1993 NASA-ODU American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Summer Faculty Fellowship Program
Since 1964, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has supported a program of summer faculty fellowships for engineering and science educators. In a series of collaborations between NASA research and development centers and nearby universities, engineering faculty members spend 10 weeks working with professional peers on research. The Summer Faculty Program Committee of the American Society for Engineering Education supervises the programs. Objectives are: to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; to stimulate and exchange ideas between participants and NASA; to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA center
Design synthesis & prototype implementation of parallel orientation manipulators for optomechatronic applications
This thesis documents a research endeavor undertaken to develop high-performing
designs for parallel orientation manipulators (POM) capable of delivering the speed
and the accuracy requirements of a typical optomechatronic application. In the
course of the research, the state of the art was reviewed, and the areas in the
existing design methodologies that can be potentially improved were identified, which
included actuator design, dimensional synthesis of POMs, control system design, and
kinematic calibration. The gaps in the current art of designing each of these POM
system components were addressed individually. The outcomes of the corresponding
development activities include a novel design of a highly integrated voice coil actuator
(VCA) possessing the speed, the size, and the accuracy requirements of small-scale
parallel robotics. Furthermore, a method for synthesizing the geometric dimensions
of a POM was developed by adopting response surface methodology (RSM) as the
optimization tool. It was also experimentally shown how conveniently RSM can be
utilized to develop an empirical quantification of the actual kinematic structure of
a POM prototype. In addition, a motion controller was formulated by adopting the
active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) technology. The classic formulation of
the ADRC algorithm was modified to develop a resource-optimized implementation
on control hardware based on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA).
The practicality and the effectiveness of the synthesized designs were ultimately
demonstrated by performance benchmarking experiments conducted on POM prototypes constructed from these components. In specific terms, it was experimentally
shown that the moving platforms of the prototyped manipulators can achieve highspeed
motions that can exceed 2000 degrees/s in angular velocity, and 5×105 degrees/s2
in angular acceleration
Guidance and control of an autonomous underwater vehicle
Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/856 on 07.03.2017 by CS (TIS)A cooperative project between the Universities of Plymouth and Cranfield was aimed
at designing and developing an autonomous underwater vehicle named Hammerhead.
The work presented herein is to formulate an advance guidance and control system
and to implement it in the Hammerhead. This involves the description of Hammerhead
hardware from a control system perspective. In addition to the control system,
an intelligent navigation scheme and a state of the art vision system is also developed.
However, the development of these submodules is out of the scope of this thesis.
To model an underwater vehicle, the traditional way is to acquire painstaking mathematical
models based on laws of physics and then simplify and linearise the models to
some operating point. One of the principal novelties of this research is the use of system
identification techniques on actual vehicle data obtained from full scale in water
experiments. Two new guidance mechanisms have also been formulated for cruising
type vehicles. The first is a modification of the proportional navigation guidance for
missiles whilst the other is a hybrid law which is a combination of several guidance
strategies employed during different phases of the Right.
In addition to the modelling process and guidance systems, a number of robust control
methodologies have been conceived for Hammerhead. A discrete time linear
quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery based autopilot is formulated and integrated
with the conventional and more advance guidance laws proposed. A model
predictive controller (MPC) has also been devised which is constructed using artificial
intelligence techniques such as genetic algorithms (GA) and fuzzy logic. A GA
is employed as an online optimization routine whilst fuzzy logic has been exploited
as an objective function in an MPC framework. The GA-MPC autopilot has been
implemented in Hammerhead in real time and results demonstrate excellent robustness
despite the presence of disturbances and ever present modelling uncertainty. To
the author's knowledge, this is the first successful application of a GA in real time
optimization for controller tuning in the marine sector and thus the thesis makes an
extremely novel and useful contribution to control system design in general. The
controllers are also integrated with the proposed guidance laws and is also considered
to be an invaluable contribution to knowledge. Moreover, the autopilots are used in
conjunction with a vision based altitude information sensor and simulation results
demonstrate the efficacy of the controllers to cope with uncertain altitude demands.J&S MARINE LTD., QINETIQ,

Sensors, measurement fusion and missile trajectory optimisation
When considering advances in “smart” weapons it is clear that air-launched systems have adopted an integrated approach to meet rigorous requirements, whereas air-defence systems have not. The demands on sensors, state observation, missile guidance, and simulation for air-defence is the subject of this research. Historical reviews for each topic, justification of favoured techniques and algorithms are provided, using a nomenclature developed to unify these disciplines. Sensors selected for their enduring impact on future systems are described and simulation models provided. Complex internal systems are reduced to simpler models capable of replicating dominant features, particularly those that adversely effect state observers. Of the state observer architectures considered, a distributed system comprising ground based target and own-missile tracking, data up-link, and on-board missile measurement and track fusion is the natural choice for air-defence. An IMM is used to process radar measurements, combining the estimates from filters with different target dynamics. The remote missile state observer combines up-linked target tracks and missile plots with IMU and seeker data to provide optimal guidance information. The performance of traditional PN and CLOS missile guidance is the basis against which on-line trajectory optimisation is judged. Enhanced guidance laws are presented that demand more from the state observers, stressing the importance of time-to-go and transport delays in strap-down systems employing staring array technology. Algorithms for solving the guidance twopoint boundary value problems created from the missile state observer output using gradient projection in function space are presented. A simulation integrating these aspects was developed whose infrastructure, capable of supporting any dynamical model, is described in the air-defence context. MBDA have extended this work creating the Aircraft and Missile Integration Simulation (AMIS) for integrating different launchers and missiles.
