Industries in every sector have observed tangible losses from a broad range of disruptions during recent years. Factors such as globalization and outsourcing have made supply chains more sophisticated and this makes disruption management more necessary. Any disruption in each part of supply chain makes the whole supply chain face derangement and at last, ultimate customers realize the shaped disadvantages. Since avoidance of disruption occurrence is not always possible, application of different strategies with the aid of minimization of negative effects seems necessary. That is why in this paper, different strategies for disruption management in petroleum products supply chain and suitable criteria for prioritizing them are recognized via Balanced Score Card approach measures. After that, by application of fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process and intuitionistic fuzzy Choquet integral operator, their priorities are specified in order to make a guideline for managers to set proper plans and manage such disruptions more accurately

A case study on strategies to deal with the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in the food and beverage industry

This research investigates the impacts of the novel coronavirus disease, also referred to as COVID-19 pandemic, on the food and beverage industry. It examines both short-term and medium-to-long-term impacts of the pandemic and outlines strategies to reduce the potential consequences of those impacts. To this end, we use a qualitative, multiple-case-study methodology, collecting data from eight sample companies with fourteen respondents in the food and beverage industry in Bangladesh. The findings show that the short-term impacts of this pandemic, such as product expiry, shortage of working capital, and limited operations of distributors, are severe, while the medium-to-long-term impacts promise to be complex and uncertain. In the longer term, various performance metrics, such as return on investment by the firms, the contribution of the firms to the gross domestic product (GDP), and employee size, are all expected to decrease. Moreover, firms may need to restructure their supply chain and build relationships with new distributors and trade partners. The study proposes several strategies that managers in this sector can adopt to improve resiliency in the changing environment during and after the COVID-19 era. While this research is novel and contributes to both theory and practice, it does not consider small and medium-sized companies in the food and beverage industry. Therefore, the impacts and strategies we identify may not apply to smaller companies

Robust investment decisions under supply disruption in petroleum markets

Energy-dependent economies and energy security strategies need to cope with oil and gas supply disruptions that are rare but persistent and can be financially catastrophic. This paper proposes a tractable approach for determining robust investment strategies in petroleum markets under the risk of supply disruption when asset prices follow geometric mean-reverting jump processes. The robust counterpart of the portfolio management problem under supply disruption is derived for several symmetric and asymmetric representations of the uncertainties in the problem. Computational experiments with real market data indicate that the robust optimization approach using uncertainty sets tailored to the characteristics of the data results in strategies with superior worst-case performance

THE IMPACT OF CRIMINALITY ON SUPPLY CHAIN INTEGRATION AND COMPANY PERFORMANCE IN THE DOWNSTREAM SECTOR OF THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY [The Case of North-west Nigeria]

Abstract This thesis, with a focus on the downstream petroleum sector in North-west Nigeria, investigates the impact of intentional, human-induced disruptions on supply chain integration (SCI) dimensions. Two theories were used as guiding principles; crisis theory that presents criminality as a crisis situation in the industry; and the resources-based view (RBV) that explains SCI according to the organisational capability to collaborate and gain advantages using the available resources. It also examines the extent to which safety/security initiatives (as resources) mitigate these disruptions. Following mixed-methods of quantitative-qualitative sequential explanatory research design, the relationships between criminal elements and the dimensions of SCI and organisational performance. Quantitative analyses, guided by sets of hypotheses tested using regression analysis, ranked the criminal elements in order of their impact on SCI dimensions and impact of SCI dimensions on organisational performance. A Participatory Action Research (PAR) team was engaged to explain both the correlations and the causation resulting from the quantitative analysis by focusing on the vulnerable areas identified and by proposing solutions. To help decision-making, several decision-making tools (diagramming, visualization, etc) were used, expanding over 3,000 man hours of PAR meetings involving 17 members over a period of two years were recorded. Fifty Six (56) causes of disruption were identified, which were subsequently reduced to 34, of which 12 were primary and 22 secondary. Using diagramming, 21 causes were found to be central to criminality in the region of study. These causes and their attributes were discussed in a PAR setting. Organisations represented at the PAR implemented agreed implementable operational actions. The impact of those actions on organisational processes related to the security and safety of both products and facilities were evaluated and found to be effective countermeasures for the identified causes. This thesis work reveals that participatory security processes gives better security advantages for oil and gas facilities. As a result of this work a Participatory-oriented Security Approach model is proposed, in line with participatory theories
