    For many decades, researchers have been trying to make computers’ analysis of images as effective as the system of human vision is. For this purpose, many algorithms and systems have previously been created. The whole process covers various stages, including image processing, representation and recognition. The results of this work can be applied to many computer-assisted areas of everyday life. They improve particular activities and provide handy tools, which are sometimes only for entertainment, but quite often, they significantly increase our safety. In fact, the practical implementation of image processing algorithms is particularly wide. Moreover, the rapid growth of computational complexity and computer efficiency has allowed for the development of more sophisticated and effective algorithms and tools. Although significant progress has been made so far, many issues still remain, resulting in the need for the development of novel approaches

    Ensemble learning using multi-objective optimisation for arabic handwritten words

    Arabic handwriting recognition is a dynamic and stimulating field of study within pattern recognition. This system plays quite a significant part in today's global environment. It is a widespread and computationally costly function due to cursive writing, a massive number of words, and writing style. Based on the literature, the existing features lack data supportive techniques and building geometric features. Most ensemble learning approaches are based on the assumption of linear combination, which is not valid due to differences in data types. Also, the existing approaches of classifier generation do not support decision-making for selecting the most suitable classifier, and it requires enabling multi-objective optimisation to handle these differences in data types. In this thesis, new type of feature for handwriting using Segments Interpolation (SI) to find the best fitting line in each of the windows with a model for finding the best operating point window size for SI features. Multi-Objective Ensemble Oriented (MOEO) formulated to control the classifier topology and provide feedback support for changing the classifiers' topology and weights based on the extension of Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). It is designated as the Random Subset based Parents Selection (RSPS-NSGA-II) to handle neurons and accuracy. Evaluation metrics from two perspectives classification and Multiobjective optimization. The experimental design based on two subsets of the IFN/ENIT database. The first one consists of 10 classes (C10) and 22 classes (C22). The features were tested with Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). This work improved due to the SI feature. SI shows a significant result with SVM with 88.53% for C22. RSPS for C10 at k=2 achieved 91% accuracy with fewer neurons than NSGA-II, and for C22 at k=10, accuracy has been increased 81% compared to NSGA-II 78%. Future work may consider introducing more features to the system, applying them to other languages, and integrating it with sequence learning for more accuracy

    Deep Sparse Auto-Encoder Features Learning for Arabic Text Recognition

    One of the most recent challenging issues of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence is Arabic text recognition. This research topic is still a pervasive and unaddressed research field, because of several factors. Complications arise due to the cursive nature of the Arabic writing, character similarities, unlimited vocabulary, use of multi-size and mixed-fonts, etc. To handle these challenges, an automatic Arabic text recognition requires building a robust system by computing discriminative features and applying a rigorous classifier together to achieve an improved performance. In this work, we introduce a new deep learning based system that recognizes Arabic text contained in images. We propose a novel hybrid network, combining a Bag-of-Feature (BoF) framework for feature extraction based on a deep Sparse Auto-Encoder (SAE), and Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), for sequence recognition. Our proposed system, termed BoF-deep SAE-HMM, is tested on four datasets, namely the printed Arabic line images Printed KHATT (P-KHATT), the benchmark printed word images Arabic Printed Text Image (APTI), the benchmark handwritten Arabic word images IFN/ENIT, and the benchmark handwritten digits images Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST)

    Retrieval-, Distributed-, and Interleaved Practice in the Classroom:A Systematic Review

    Three of the most effective learning strategies identified are retrieval practice, distributed practice, and interleaved practice, also referred to as desirable difficulties. However, it is yet unknown to what extent these three practices foster learning in primary and secondary education classrooms (as opposed to the laboratory and/or tertiary education classrooms, where most research is conducted) and whether these strategies affect different students differently. To address these gaps, we conducted a systematic review. Initial and detailed screening of 869 documents found in a threefold search resulted in a pool of 29 journal articles published from 2006 through June 2020. Seventy-five effect sizes nested in 47 experiments nested in 29 documents were included in the review. Retrieval- and interleaved practice appeared to benefit students’ learning outcomes quite consistently; distributed practice less so. Furthermore, only cognitive Student*Task characteristics (i.e., features of the student’s cognition regarding the task, such as initial success) appeared to be significant moderators. We conclude that future research further conceptualising and operationalising initial effort is required, as is a differentiated approach to implementing desirable difficulties

    Designing the early history of typography in Brazil

    Many histories of typography in Brazil have been told from the point of view of book and newspaper publishing. A history of typography in Brazil as part of design history, however, is still to be written, or, better yet, designed. In order to help address this gap in knowledge, a digital platform able to gather data and provide information on the early history of letterpress printing in the city of São Paulo has been devised and implemented by a research team coordinated by the authors of this paper. In addition to textual and numerical information on over 200 trade printers, type foundries, type distributors, and their staff, the platform provides interactive maps showing the location of these companies, and a timeline of their activity from 1827 to 1927. It also offers a reconstruction of the printers’ repertoires—samples of the typefaces they used, built from thousands of images collected from printed pages. The result is a rich set of data accessible by anyone interested in learning more about the early history of typography in São Paulo, gathered in a system that allows for systematic updates, and which can be expanded to incorporate data from other periods, sources and location
