    Today we are moving into a “post-PC” world! Not many people sit in front of custom built PCs to do their businesses any more. Hand held devices such as iPod Touch, iPhone, Galaxy S3, iPad, Galaxy Tab, Airbook, Notepad etc. are bringing in a new paradigm as to how people use and communicate information. These devices can be thought as a theoretical “black-box”. They are for people who want to use it without wanting to know how they work. Such devices have third generation user interfaces – multi touch, physics and gestures (MPG). They need updates, but the user is not worried of how and where the files are stored. When a new application is installed, the user sees the icon and starts using it. The user is not interested in, what files were installed or where it was installed – there is no file management. The post-PC approach to dealing with software is that it’s discovered on an app store, downloaded with a single touch and deleted with another touch. Updates all come at once from the app store and it all happens behind the scene with minimal user involvement. All this is happening and adopted rapidly because people are able to do a number of things without being restricted to one place.     Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey

    This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols, user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed, use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed before the chapter is finally concluded.Comment: 62 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables.     For almost 15 years, since it has been released, Wi-Fi has been one of the dominant technologies in telecommunication world. However, because of its weaknesses related to security, interference and weak quality of service it has not been accepted as a viable business. Furthermore, it also operates in unlicensed spectrum bands which magnify these issues. On the other hand, technological innovations through new improvements in the world of Wi-Fi have made it one of the most popular indoor communication solutions for enterprises as well as in outdoor common meeting points. Therefore, it has become imperative to study this subject due to its popularity and several issues associated with this technology to create a viable business model for Anvia Oyj. In an attempt to contribute towards this field, present thesis provides a comprehensive theoretical framework that addresses WLAN technology from different aspects including Wi-Fi roaming as well as the description of business model segments. In order to strengthen enterprise WLAN business models, a comprehensive data was collected through different resources. First, an internal interview in Anvia Oyj based on its current enterprise WLAN business model was conducted. Secondly, two surveys were conducted in different enterprise WLAN customer segments; 32 interviews with small office home office (SOHO) enterprises and 10 interviews with SMEs/LEs and municipalities. Thirdly, a global enterprise WLAN market analysis was conducted through Internet resources. Based on these, analyzes, recommendations and business model enhancements are suggested in this thesis.     Increasing security in the physical layer of wireless communication

    This paper introduces a concept of increasing securing in the Physical layer (PHY) of wireless communication. It gives a short description of current status of wireless standards and their security. Despite the existence of advanced security protocols such as IEEE 802.11i or WLAN VPNs, wireless networks still remain vulnerable to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks aiming at PHY and Data Link Layers. The new solution challenges the problems with the currently defined PHY and Data Link layers. The concept introduced here, holds a promise of descending with some of the security measures to the lower layers of the TCP/IP and in this way not only increases security but also efficiency and performance. In addition this model would reduce management overhead and security architecture complexity. The proposed solution is dealing with: encryption implemented as part of modulation techniques as well as authentication procedures partially deployed within the first two layers of Open System Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack. The introduced model attempts to solve problems related to DoS that is focused on Data Link Layer, eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks. Additionally, there are presented some ideas for future research in the area of protection from malicious activity aimed at the PHY Layer – e.g., jamming attacks, as well as other security issues such as eavesdropping prevention by use of physics laws and tunnelling as another layer of protection to ensure privacy and signal robustness. The potential deployment of this technology embraces Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) as well as the emerging IEEE 802.16e (mobile WiMAX) standard. In this paper there are considered and analysed practical needs, defined necessary steps and set priorities.     A Study of Authentication Scheme for Wireless Access Network using APEA Framework

    In case of wireless access networks significantly changes the way we live and work, bringing us closer anywhere at any time. Security, privacy, accountability, and efficiency issues are of most concern in such networks. because of need and importance, little research has been conducted on designing accountable and privacy-preserving authentication schemes for wireless access networks, and this motivates us to develop an authentication framework, namely APEA using Attribute Based Encryption, that defines new form of APEA while Existing version of APEA integrates a key management protocol, where key transfer mechanism is more complicated , time consuming and less secure In our proposed approach attribute based encryption does is that, it effectively binds the access-control policy to the data and the users(clients) instead of having a server mediating access to files. An effective approach to simultaneously achieve the four goals without involving any trusted third party. However, with the requirement of wireless area network security solution, this paper presents the various techniques on WAN authentication with certain constraints and analyzes their strengths and weaknesses
