    Robust 3D Action Recognition through Sampling Local Appearances and Global Distributions

    3D action recognition has broad applications in human-computer interaction and intelligent surveillance. However, recognizing similar actions remains challenging since previous literature fails to capture motion and shape cues effectively from noisy depth data. In this paper, we propose a novel two-layer Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) model, which suppresses the noise disturbances and jointly encodes both motion and shape cues. First, background clutter is removed by a background modeling method that is designed for depth data. Then, motion and shape cues are jointly used to generate robust and distinctive spatial-temporal interest points (STIPs): motion-based STIPs and shape-based STIPs. In the first layer of our model, a multi-scale 3D local steering kernel (M3DLSK) descriptor is proposed to describe local appearances of cuboids around motion-based STIPs. In the second layer, a spatial-temporal vector (STV) descriptor is proposed to describe the spatial-temporal distributions of shape-based STIPs. Using the Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) model, motion and shape cues are combined to form a fused action representation. Our model performs favorably compared with common STIP detection and description methods. Thorough experiments verify that our model is effective in distinguishing similar actions and robust to background clutter, partial occlusions and pepper noise

    Human Motion Analysis for Efficient Action Recognition

    Automatic understanding of human actions is at the core of several application domains, such as content-based indexing, human-computer interaction, surveillance, and sports video analysis. The recent advances in digital platforms and the exponential growth of video and image data have brought an urgent quest for intelligent frameworks to automatically analyze human motion and predict their corresponding action based on visual data and sensor signals. This thesis presents a collection of methods that targets human action recognition using different action modalities. The first method uses the appearance modality and classifies human actions based on heterogeneous global- and local-based features of scene and humanbody appearances. The second method harnesses 2D and 3D articulated human poses and analyizes the body motion using a discriminative combination of the parts’ velocities, locations, and correlations histograms for action recognition. The third method presents an optimal scheme for combining the probabilistic predictions from different action modalities by solving a constrained quadratic optimization problem. In addition to the action classification task, we present a study that compares the utility of different pose variants in motion analysis for human action recognition. In particular, we compare the recognition performance when 2D and 3D poses are used. Finally, we demonstrate the efficiency of our pose-based method for action recognition in spotting and segmenting motion gestures in real time from a continuous stream of an input video for the recognition of the Italian sign gesture language

    Interactive multiple object learning with scanty human supervision

Given an input video stream recorded during the human robot interaction, the user just needs to annotate a small fraction of frames to compute object specific classifiers based on random ferns which share the same features. The resulting methodology is fast (in a few seconds, complex object appearances can be learned), versatile (it can be applied to unconstrained scenarios), scalable (real experiments show we can model up to 30 different object classes), and minimizes the amount of human intervention by leveraging the uncertainty measures associated to each classifier.; We thoroughly validate the approach on synthetic data and on real sequences acquired with a mobile platform in indoor and outdoor scenarios containing a multitude of different objects. We show that with little human assistance, we are able to build object classifiers robust to viewpoint changes, partial occlusions, varying lighting and cluttered backgrounds. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc.     ModDrop: adaptive multi-modal gesture recognition

    We present a method for gesture detection and localisation based on multi-scale and multi-modal deep learning. Each visual modality captures spatial information at a particular spatial scale (such as motion of the upper body or a hand), and the whole system operates at three temporal scales. Key to our technique is a training strategy which exploits: i) careful initialization of individual modalities; and ii) gradual fusion involving random dropping of separate channels (dubbed ModDrop) for learning cross-modality correlations while preserving uniqueness of each modality-specific representation. We present experiments on the ChaLearn 2014 Looking at People Challenge gesture recognition track, in which we placed first out of 17 teams. Fusing multiple modalities at several spatial and temporal scales leads to a significant increase in recognition rates, allowing the model to compensate for errors of the individual classifiers as well as noise in the separate channels. Futhermore, the proposed ModDrop training technique ensures robustness of the classifier to missing signals in one or several channels to produce meaningful predictions from any number of available modalities. In addition, we demonstrate the applicability of the proposed fusion scheme to modalities of arbitrary nature by experiments on the same dataset augmented with audio.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Learning Generative Models for Multi-Activity Body Pose Estimation

    We present a method to simultaneously estimate 3D body pose and action categories from monocular video sequences. Our approach learns a generative model of the relationship of body pose and image appearance using a sparse kernel regressor. Body poses are modelled on a low-dimensional manifold obtained by Locally Linear Embedding dimensionality reduction. In addition, we learn a prior model of likely body poses and a dynamical model in this pose manifold. Sparse kernel regressors capture the nonlinearities of this mapping efficiently. Within a Recursive Bayesian Sampling framework, the potentially multimodal posterior probability distributions can then be inferred. An activity-switching mechanism based on learned transfer functions allows for inference of the performed activity class, along with the estimation of body pose and 2D image location of the subject. Using a rough foreground segmentation, we compare Binary PCA and distance transforms to encode the appearance. As a postprocessing step, the globally optimal trajectory through the entire sequence is estimated, yielding a single pose estimate per frame that is consistent throughout the sequence. We evaluate the algorithm on challenging sequences with subjects that are alternating between running and walking movements. Our experiments show how the dynamical model helps to track through poorly segmented low-resolution image sequences where tracking otherwise fails, while at the same time reliably classifying the activity typ
