Post-Westgate SWAT : C4ISTAR Architectural Framework for Autonomous Network Integrated Multifaceted Warfighting Solutions Version 1.0 : A Peer-Reviewed Monograph
Police SWAT teams and Military Special Forces face mounting pressure and
challenges from adversaries that can only be resolved by way of ever more
sophisticated inputs into tactical operations. Lethal Autonomy provides
constrained military/security forces with a viable option, but only if
implementation has got proper empirically supported foundations. Autonomous
weapon systems can be designed and developed to conduct ground, air and naval
operations. This monograph offers some insights into the challenges of
developing legal, reliable and ethical forms of autonomous weapons, that
address the gap between Police or Law Enforcement and Military operations that
is growing exponentially small. National adversaries are today in many
instances hybrid threats, that manifest criminal and military traits, these
often require deployment of hybrid-capability autonomous weapons imbued with
the capability to taken on both Military and/or Security objectives. The
Westgate Terrorist Attack of 21st September 2013 in the Westlands suburb of
Nairobi, Kenya is a very clear manifestation of the hybrid combat scenario that
required military response and police investigations against a fighting cell of

A brief network analysis of Artificial Intelligence publication
In this paper, we present an illustration to the history of Artificial
Intelligence(AI) with a statistical analysis of publish since 1940. We
collected and mined through the IEEE publish data base to analysis the
geological and chronological variance of the activeness of research in AI. The
connections between different institutes are showed. The result shows that the
leading community of AI research are mainly in the USA, China, the Europe and
Japan. The key institutes, authors and the research hotspots are revealed. It
is found that the research institutes in the fields like Data Mining, Computer
Vision, Pattern Recognition and some other fields of Machine Learning are quite
consistent, implying a strong interaction between the community of each field.
It is also showed that the research of Electronic Engineering and Industrial or
Commercial applications are very active in California. Japan is also publishing
a lot of papers in robotics. Due to the limitation of data source, the result
might be overly influenced by the number of published articles, which is to our
best improved by applying network keynode analysis on the research community
instead of merely count the number of publish.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
Special issue on smart interactions in cyber-physical systems: Humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors
In recent years, there has been increasing interaction between humans and nonâhuman systems as we move further beyond the industrial age, the information age, and as we move into the fourthâgeneration society. The ability to distinguish between human and nonâhuman capabilities has become more difficult to discern. Given this, it is common that cyberâphysical systems (CPSs) are rapidly integrated with human functionality, and humans have become increasingly dependent on CPSs to perform their daily routines.The constant indicators of a future where human and nonâhuman CPSs relationships consistently interact and where they allow each other to navigate through a set of nonâtrivial goals is an interesting and rich area of research, discovery, and practical work area. The evidence of con- vergence has rapidly gained clarity, demonstrating that we can use complex combinations of sensors, artificial intelli- gence, and data to augment human life and knowledge. To expand the knowledge in this area, we should explain how to model, design, validate, implement, and experiment with these complex systems of interaction, communication, and networking, which will be developed and explored in this special issue. This special issue will include ideas of the future that are relevant for understanding, discerning, and developing the relationship between humans and nonâ human CPSs as well as the practical nature of systems that facilitate the integration between humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors (HARMS).Fil: Kim, Donghan. Digital Systems Teaching and Research (DSTR) Robot: A Flexible Platform for Education and Applied Research
The DSTR (pronounced âDisasterâ) robot has a strong history of being adaptable to different userâs needs, and there are many opportunities ahead that indicate that the sky, quite literally, is not the limit for this robust platform. This paper provides a historical perspective on the development of the DSTR robot as a collaborative design developed by the Mobile Integrated Solutions Laboratory (MISL) at Texas A&M University and ASEP 4X4 Inc. Texas Instruments has been a major partner in the integration of the control electronics, and Texas Space Technology Applications and Research (T STAR) LLC has played a significant role in the propagation of the DSTR robot as an adaptable applied research/education/STEM outreach platform. The paper will present examples of the strong industry-academic relationships that allow the DSTR robot to be utilized in a multitude of experiential learning environments. In addition to a number of STEM outreach activities, the DSTR robots are being used in the Introduction to Engineering course at Blinn College and in the Freshman Engineering curriculum at Texas A&M University. DSTRs have also been selected by NASA scientists as a low-cost lunar sample collector. The paper will also discuss the newly developed DSTR-E (DSTR Engineering) unit which requires students to perform several engineering tasks during the build process. The paper will also include the lessons learned from initial design through its transfer to the private sector for commercialization and future plans.Cockrell School of Engineerin
A gentle transition from Java programming to Web Services using XML-RPC
Exposing students to leading edge vocational areas of relevance such as Web Services can be difficult. We show a lightweight approach by embedding a key component of Web Services within a Level 3 BSc module in Distributed Computing. We present a ready to use collection of lecture slides and student activities based on XML-RPC. In
addition we show that this material addresses the central topics in the context of web services as identified by Draganova (2003)

Building ArtBots to attract students into STEM learning
There is an increasing worldwide demand for people educated into science and technology. Unfortunately, girls and underprivileged students are often underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programs. We believe that by inclusion of art in these programs, educational activities might become more attractive to a broader audience. In this work we present an example of such an educational activity: an international robotics and art week for secondary school students. This educational activity builds up on the project-based and inquiry learning framework. This article is intended as a brief manual to help others organise such an activity. It also gives insights in how we led a highly heterogeneous group of students into learning STEM and becoming science and technology ambassadors for their peers
IMPLEMENTATION OF A LOCALIZATION-ORIENTED HRI FOR WALKING ROBOTS IN THE ROBOCUP ENVIRONMENT
This paper presents the design and implementation of a humanârobot interface capable of evaluating robot localization performance and maintaining full control of robot behaviors in the RoboCup domain. The system consists of legged robots, behavior modules, an overhead visual tracking system, and a graphic user interface. A humanârobot communication framework is designed for executing cooperative and competitive processing tasks between users and robots by using object oriented and modularized software architecture, operability, and functionality. Some experimental results are presented to show the performance of the proposed system based on simulated and real-time information. </jats:p
The use of UTAUT and Post Acceptance models to investigate the attitude towards a telepresence robot in an educational setting
(1) Background: In the last decade, various investigations into the field of robotics have created several opportunities for further innovation to be possible in student education. However, despite scientific evidence, there is still strong scepticism surrounding the use of robots in some social fields, such as personal care and education; (2) Methods: In this research, we present a new tool named: HANCON model that was developed merging and extending the constructs of two solid and proven models: the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model to examine the factors that may influence the decision to use a telepresence robot as an instrument in educational practice, and the Post Acceptance Model to evaluate acceptability after the actual use of a telepresence robot. The new tool is implemented and used to study the acceptance of a Double telepresence robot by 112 pre-service teachers in an educational setting; (3) Results: The analysis of the experimental results predicts and demonstrate a positive attitude towards the use of telepresence robot in a school setting and confirm the applicability of the model in an educational context; (4) Conclusions: The constructs of the HANCON model could predict and explain the acceptance of social telepresence robots in social contexts
