    Idempotent Turing Machines

    A function f is said to be idempotent if f(f(x)) = f(x) holds whenever f(x) is defined. This paper presents a computation model for idempotent functions, called an idempotent Turing machine. The computation model is necessarily and sufficiently expressive in the sense that not only does it always compute an idempotent function but also every idempotent computable function can be computed by an idempotent Turing machine. Furthermore, a few typical properties of the computation model such as robustness and universality are shown. Our computation model is expected to be a basis of special-purpose (or domain-specific) programming languages in which only but all idempotent computable functions can be defined

    Scoped and Typed Staging by Evaluation

    Using a dependently typed host language, we give a well scoped-and-typed by construction presentation of a minimal two level simply typed calculus with a static and a dynamic stage. The staging function partially evaluating the part of a term that are static is obtained by a model construction inspired by normalisation by evaluation. We then go on to demonstrate how this minimal language can be extended to provide additional metaprogramming capabilities, and to define a higher order functional language evaluating to digital circuit descriptions.Comment: As accepted for publication at PEPM 202

    One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty\u27s scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 2001 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University\u27s laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during 2001 produced over 2,299* works, including 1,685 scholarly papers and articles, 69 books, 269 book chapters, 184 reviews, 86 creative works and 6 patented works.
