    Dense-choice Counter Machines revisited

    This paper clarifies the picture about Dense-choice Counter Machines, which have been less studied than (discrete) Counter Machines. We revisit the definition of "Dense Counter Machines" so that it now extends (discrete) Counter Machines, and we provide new undecidability and decidability results. Using the first-order additive mixed theory of reals and integers, we give a logical characterization of the sets of configurations reachable by reversal-bounded Dense-choice Counter Machines

    Reasoning about reversal-bounded counter machines

    International audienceIn this paper, we present a short survey on reversal-bounded counter machines. It focuses on the main techniques for model-checking such counter machines with specifications expressed with formulae from some linear-time temporal logic. All the decision procedures are designed by translation into Presburger arithmetic. We provide a proof that is alternative to Ibarra's original one for showing that reachability sets are effectively definable in Presburger arithmetic. Extensions to repeated control state reachability and to additional temporal properties are discussed in the paper. The article is written to the honor of Professor Ewa Orłowska and focuses on several topics that are developped in her works

    AbstractOne-way two-counter machines represent a universal model of computation. Here we consider the polynomial-time classes of multicounter machines with a constant number of reversals and separate the computational power of nondeterminism, randomization and determinism. For instance, we show that polynomial-time one-way multicounter machines, with error probability tending to zero with growing input length, can recognize languages that cannot be accepted by polynomial-time nondeterministic two-way multicounter machines with a bounded number of reversals. A similar result holds for the comparison of determinism and one-sided-error randomization, and of determinism and Las Vegas randomization

    Parikh One-Counter Automata

    Counting abilities in finite automata are traditionally provided by two orthogonal extensions: adding a single counter that can be tested for zeroness at any point, or adding ?-valued counters that are tested for equality only at the end of runs. In this paper, finite automata extended with both types of counters are introduced. They are called Parikh One-Counter Automata (POCA): the "Parikh" part referring to the evaluation of counters at the end of runs, and the "One-Counter" part to the single counter that can be tested during runs. Their expressiveness, in the deterministic and nondeterministic variants, is investigated; it is shown in particular that there are deterministic POCA languages that cannot be expressed without nondeterminism in the original models. The natural decision problems are also studied; strikingly, most of them are no harder than in the original models. A parametric version of nonemptiness is also considered
