    Agency Theory Approach For The Performance Of Returnee Entrepreneurs

    A returnee entrepreneur playing an important role in China market is a notable phenomenon. While their advanced knowledge and overseas networking in developed countries have advantages over local counterparts, their lack of local knowledge and connection may mitigate their advantages. This study explores the research questions how and why external management control of returnee entrepreneur is inferior to local counterpart. Based on the data collected in year 2002 from Chinese technology venture companies in Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP), we find that the performance of returnee entrepreneur’s firms is lower when they have more local subsidiaries and when they are owned by foreigners. It implies that returnee entrepreneurs may be less effective in management control over local subsidiaries which may indicate a low level of headquarters control. It also implies that foreign ownership gives rise to increase in agency conflicts between returnee entrepreneurs and foreign investors and thus has a negative impact on firms’ innovation performance. &nbsp

    How do international student returnees contribute to the development of their home countries? A systematic mapping and thematic synthesis

Through systematic mapping and thematic synthesis of 53 articles selected from an initial pool of 1515, this review delineates the literature’s portrayal of returnees’ impacts across various domains, including firm growth, industrial innovation, higher education, research, social diversity, equity, inclusion, democracy, and civic engagement. While highlighting the skills, knowledge, and resilience students garner abroad—facilitating innovative problem-solving and engagement in their countries—the study concurrently points out the emerging nature and methodological limitations of the extant literature. This review identifies critical gaps in the literature on international student returnees. It notes a lack of global evidence and an overemphasis on certain geographical contexts which questions the generalisability of the findings. Furthermore, there is a narrow focus on economic and political impacts, overlooking crucial areas like poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. Equally important is the absence of comparative studies between returnees and local counterparts. This lack of comparative studies highlights the need to distinguish the unique effects of international versus domestic higher education. This review not only advances academic understanding by systematically mapping the underexplored nexus between international student mobility and societal development but also offers implications for policy. By delineating the transformative potential of returnees and highlighting the importance of conducive environments, it underscores the necessity of informed, strategic interventions to maximise returnees’ societal contributions. In doing so, the study acknowledges existing gaps and methodological limitations within the literature, advocating for a more nuanced and evidence-based approach to leveraging international education for sustainable development.Peer reviewe

    The influence of returnee technology executives on enterprise innovation: the innovation patent data of global exchange market listed companies

    In this paper, the innovation patent data of 344 Chinese Global Exchange Market (GEM) listed companies from 2014 to 2018 is manually collected, and the effect of returnee technology executives (RTEs) on enterprise innovativeness is examined based on the empirical theory of the high ladder team. The study finds that RTEs promote enterprise innovation and that this effect persists after controlling for endogeneity and self-selection problems. By comparing the difference in the effect of RTEs on breakthrough innovation and non-breakthrough innovation, the study found that RTEs had a more significant role in promoting enterprise breakthrough innovation. Furthermore, through executive group analysis, it is found that Returnee Technology Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have more potently positive effect on promoting enterprise innovation especially breakthrough innovation and RTEs exert greater prominence in fostering innovation in companies across developed coastal areas. The research theoretically expands and deepens the investigation on the rapport between enterprise executive characteristics and innovation, highlights the importance of the human capital of overseas returnees in practice, and has a certain guiding significance for enterprise talent introduction policies

    Reducing the Resource Acquisition Costs for Returnee Entrepreneurs: Role of Chinese National Science Parks

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore the mechanisms through which Chinese National Science Parks' (NSPs) services facilitate returnee entrepreneurs' (REs) acquisition of resources for their new ventures. Resource acquisition is crucial for new ventures, but it inevitably leads to significant costs increase. Although the NSPs offer various services to REs to reduce these costs, they still struggle to find the right mix of services. Design/methodology/approach: From the transaction cost's perspective, an exploratory multiple-case study was conducted with data collected from six NSPs in China. Findings: The results reveal that four types of NSP services (mentoring and training, social event, promotion of REs and accreditation of resource holders (RHs)) have both individual and joint effects on reducing REs' resource acquisition costs. Specifically, the “accreditation of RHs” service directly helps REs reduce search costs. The combination of “accreditation of RHs”, “promotion of REs” and “social event” services help REs and RHs to establish guanxi. Further, guanxi, working along with the “mentoring and training” service, helps REs to reduce contracting, monitoring and enforcement costs. Originality/value: This study is among the first to explore the matching mechanisms between science parks’ services and entrepreneurs' cost reduction. This helps reconcile the inconsistent findings on science parks' effect by explaining why some NSPs are able to provide strong support to REs while others are less successful. In addition, the findings are useful for NSPs to develop the right mix of tailored services for REs. Finally, REs will find this study useful to evaluate which NSP is a more suitable location for their new ventures

    Chinese nursing students at Australian universities: A narrative inquiry into their motivation, learning experience, and future career planning

    This study presents a narrative inquiry of Chinese nursing students at Australian universities in order to examine these students’ motivations, learning experiences and future career planning. Australia seeks to attract international nursing students from China to maintain its economic advantage and alleviate its projected nursing shortage. In contrast, China desperately needs its best and brightest citizens who have trained abroad as nurses to return to China in order to cope with its current challenges in the healthcare system and nursing education. Little is known about the underlying factors that motivate Chinese nursing students to study in Australia, these students’ learning experiences at Australian universities, and whether or not these students will return to China after graduation. This study undertook a narrative inquiry using the three-dimensional space narrative structure approach, with an epistemological perspective drawing on constructivist and interpretivist theory. Through interviews, the authentic voices of six participants’ stories were collected to capture the entire emotional, social, intellectual and reflective processes of each student’s motivations, learning experiences and future career plans. The research findings from this study are presented as both narrative and thematic representations. By exploring and representing each theme and narrative that emerged from the field texts, meaning was unpacked to provide insights to the ‘reality’ as seen by the study participants. The findings revealed that the students’ key motivation to study in Australia was related to the possibility of permanent residency post-qualification. The decision to move was dynamic, with the participants describing cultural and social push and pull factors. Encouragement and support from peers and family were strong contributors to the motivation to study nursing and eventually work and live in Australia. Parents played an especially vital role in this decision-making process. In addition, the participants expressed a strong desire to maximise Australia’s opportunities and cultural experiences. The participants’ experience of studying in Australia was characterised by the need to learn a new language, feeling lost in a new education system vastly different to the one at home, the challenge of making new friends and socialising, and eventually successfully completing their study and attaining their goals. The experience of being an international student was not described as easy. It requires taking risks, courage, determination, motivation and persistence to succeed. Through their lived experiences and reflections of their learning journey in Australia, the six participants reconstructed their personal identity and worldviews, which ultimately helped them locate their place in Australia. The conclusion of the participants’ journey highlighted that their learning experiences have particular implications for international education, healthcare development, future educational connections and investment globally. The insight gained from this study can support the development of successful human capital investment strategies for all parties involved.     Returnee CEO and innovation in Chinese high-tech SMEs

    Using survey data for a sample of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing, we examine the impact of returnee CEOs on the innovation performance of SMEs. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, we find that firms with returnee CEOs are not more innovative than firms without returnee CEOs. However, returnee CEOs do have a positive impact on firms' innovation performance when they work in publicly owned firms, when they have ties with government agencies, and when their tenure as CEOs is relatively long.     Investigating key factors influence supply chain collaborative relationship and risk management in Chinese SMEs

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyThe sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) makes a significant contribution to job position and economic growth in China. However, SMEs face various challenges and uncertainties in the Chinese business environment. This study proposes a practical approach for Supply Chain Collaborative Relationship (SCCR) building to mediate adverse impacts from supply chain risks through leveraging partners’ critical resources. The Resource-based View (RBV) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) are employed in line with theoretical structure building in this study. Theories of Guanxi, collaborative advantage, and risk management have also been used. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research (Mixed-Method Research) approaches are employed in the study. The investigation starts with a sample of 5 research participants from executives of Chinese SMEs using qualitative research; its results are further elaborated using a subsequent survey of 216 SMEs. Data is analyzed via thematic approach (qualitative results) and the combination of SEM and CFA modeling (quantitative results). Results show the building of SCCR contributes to highly functional and stable alliances in Chinese SMEs, which has significant influences in motivating partners’ willingness to share risks and resources to support supply chain risk management. This study furthermore manifests that building of SCCR should depend on either interpersonal and inter-organizational level interactions, while interpersonal relationships between executives has significant influence to SCCR development

    Análise de fatores críticos à implantação de parques científicos: um estudo de caso

Mesmo havendo um número crescente de PCTs em implantação no Brasil e no exterior, ainda existe lacuna na literatura sobre esse processo. Entende-se que, para que a implantação seja bem-sucedida, é necessário conhecer e gerenciar os fatores críticos envolvidos. Assim, com o intuito de identificar os fatores críticos de sucesso para a implantação de parques científicos, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de literatura na base de dados Scopus, dos estudos relacionados ao tema publicados entre os anos de 2009 e 2015. Em paralelo, foi realizado um estudo de caso por meio de análise documental, que garantiu fidelidade de dados e ofereceu condições de inventariar as atividades e projetos desenvolvidos pelo PCT estudado. Também possibilitou mapear as ações planejadas em conjunto com as esferas pública e privada e, por fim, a análise do faturamento do Parque em implantação. Os resultados do estudo de caso demonstraram que a falta de um modelo conceitual e de diretrizes estabelecidas fragiliza o desenvolvimento de projetos e atividades oferecidas pelo parque, refletindo-se no seu papel estratégico. Na pesquisa de campo com os gestores do parque, foi possível identificar o entendimento desses atores quanto aos fatores críticos de sucesso. Os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio da triangulação entre métodos de pesquisa, em que a pesquisadora verificou os dados de maneira a proporcionar a sua compreensão para utilizá-los como subsídios na proposição de um modelo de framework conceitual para implantação de Parque Científico e Tecnológico.Abstract : The objective of this study is to identify factors critical to the implementation of Science and Technology Parks (PCTs). Even with a growing number of PCTs under implementation in Brazil and abroad, there is still shortage of studies on this process. It is understood that in order for the implementation to be successful, it is necessary to know and manage the critical factors involved. Thus, with the objective to identify critical success factors for implementing science parks, the study carried out a systematic review of literature on the Scopus database, the studies related to the subject published between 2009 and 2015. In parallel, a case study was conducted through document analysis, which ensured data fidelity and conditions offered to inventory the activities and projects developed by the PCT studied. It was possible to map the actions planned in conjunction with the public and private sector, and finally, the financial analysis of the Park under implementation. The case study results showed that the lack of a conceptual framework and established guidelines weakens the development of projects and activities offered by the park, reflected in its strategic role. In the field research with the managers of the park, it was possible to identify the understanding of these actors as the critical success factors. Data were analyzed using triangulation between research methods, in which the researcher found the data so as to provide their understanding, to use them as subsidies in proposing a conceptual framework model for Scientific and Technological Park deployment
