From the theoretical point of view, the thesis main challenge is to develop a unitary watermarking framework (insertion/detection) able to serve the two above mentioned applications in the compressed domain. From the methodological point of view, the challenge is to instantiate this theoretical framework for serving the targeted applications. The thesis first main contribution consists in building the theoretical framework for the multi symbol watermarking based on quantization index modulation (m-QIM). The insertion rule is analytically designed by extending the binary QIM rule. The detection rule is optimized so as to ensure minimal probability of error under additive white Gaussian noise distributed attacks. It is thus demonstrated that the data payload can be increased by a factor of log2m, for prescribed transparency and additive Gaussian noise power. A data payload of 150 bits per minute, i.e. about 20 times larger than the limit imposed by the DCI standard, is obtained. The thesis second main theoretical contribution consists in specifying a preprocessing MPEG-4 AVC shaping operation which can eliminate the intra-frame drift effect. The drift represents the distortion spread in the compressed stream related to the MPEG encoding paradigm. In this respect, the drift distortion propagation problem in MPEG-4 AVC is algebraically expressed and the corresponding equations system is solved under drift-free constraints. The drift-free shaping results in gain in transparency of 2 dB in PSNREVRY-INT (912282302) / SudocSudocFranceF
Watermarking can be considered as the most flexible property right protection technology. The watermarking applicative issue is to reach the trade-off between the properties of transparency, robustness, data payload and computational cost. While the capturing and displaying of the 3D content are solely based on the two left/right views, some alternative representations, like the disparity maps should also be considered during transmission/storage. A specific study on the optimal (with respect to the above-mentioned properties) insertion domain is also required. The present thesis tackles the above-mentioned challenges. First, a new disparity map (3D video-New Three Step Search - 3DV-NTSS) is designed. The performances of the 3DV-NTSS were evaluated in terms of visual quality of the reconstructed image and computational cost. When compared with state of the art methods (NTSS and FS-MPEG) average gains of 2dB in PSNR and 0.1 in SSIM are obtained. The computational cost is reduced by average factors between 1.3 and 13. Second, a comparative study on the main classes of 2D inherited watermarking methods and on their related optimal insertion domains is carried out. Four insertion methods are considered; they belong to the SS, SI and hybrid (Fast-IProtect) families. The experiments brought to light that the Fast-IProtect performed in the new disparity map domain (3DV-NTSS) would be generic enough so as to serve a large variety of applications. The statistical relevance of the results is given by the 95% confidence limits and their underlying relative errors lower than er<0.1EVRY-INT (912282302) / SudocSudocFranceF
Print-Scan Resilient Text Image Watermarking Based on Stroke Direction Modulation for Chinese Document Authentication
Print-scan resilient watermarking has emerged as an attractive way for document security. This paper proposes an stroke direction modulation technique for watermarking in Chinese text images. The watermark produced by the idea offers robustness to print-photocopy-scan, yet provides relatively high embedding capacity without losing the transparency. During the embedding phase, the angle of rotatable strokes are quantized to embed the bits. This requires several stages of preprocessing, including stroke generation, junction searching, rotatable stroke decision and character partition. Moreover, shuffling is applied to equalize the uneven embedding capacity. For the data detection, denoising and deskewing mechanisms are used to compensate for the distortions induced by hardcopy. Experimental results show that our technique attains high detection accuracy against distortions resulting from print-scan operations, good quality photocopies and benign attacks in accord with the future goal of soft authentication
A NOVEL JOINT PERCEPTUAL ENCRYPTION AND WATERMARKING SCHEME (JPEW) WITHIN JPEG FRAMEWORK
Due to the rapid growth in internet and multimedia technologies, many new
commercial applications like video on demand (VOD), pay-per-view and real-time
multimedia broadcast etc, have emerged. To ensure the integrity and confidentiality of
the multimedia content, the content is usually watermarked and then encrypted or vice
versa. If the multimedia content needs to be watermarked and encrypted at the same
time, the watermarking function needs to be performed first followed by encryption
function. Hence, if the watermark needs to be extracted then the multimedia data
needs to be decrypted first followed by extraction of the watermark. This results in
large computational overhead. The solution provided in the literature for this problem
is by using what is called partial encryption, in which media data are partitioned into
two parts - one to be watermarked and the other is encrypted. In addition, some
multimedia applications i.e. video on demand (VOD), Pay-TV, pay-per-view etc,
allow multimedia content preview which involves „perceptual‟ encryption wherein all
or some selected part of the content is, perceptually speaking, distorted with an
encryption key. Up till now no joint perceptual encryption and watermarking scheme
has been proposed in the literature.
In this thesis, a novel Joint Perceptual Encryption and Watermarking (JPEW)
scheme is proposed that is integrated within JPEG standard. The design of JPEW
involves the design and development of both perceptual encryption and watermarking
schemes that are integrated in JPEG and feasible within the „partial‟ encryption
framework. The perceptual encryption scheme exploits the energy distribution of AC
components and DC components bitplanes of continuous-tone images and is carried
out by selectively encrypting these AC coefficients and DC components bitplanes.
The encryption itself is based on a chaos-based permutation reported in an earlier
work. Similarly, in contrast to the traditional watermarking schemes, the proposed
watermarking scheme makes use of DC component of the image and it is carried out
by selectively substituting certain bitplanes of DC components with watermark bits.

Apart from the aforesaid JPEW, additional perceptual encryption scheme, integrated
in JPEG, has also been proposed. The scheme is outside of joint framework and
implements perceptual encryption on region of interest (ROI) by scrambling the DCT
blocks of the chosen ROI.
The performances of both, perceptual encryption and watermarking schemes are
evaluated and compared with Quantization Index modulation (QIM) based
watermarking scheme and reversible Histogram Spreading (RHS) based perceptual
encryption scheme. The results show that the proposed watermarking scheme is
imperceptible and robust, and suitable for authentication. Similarly, the proposed
perceptual encryption scheme outperforms the RHS based scheme in terms of number
of operations required to achieve a given level of perceptual encryption and provides
control over the amount of perceptual encryption. The overall security of the JPEW
has also been evaluated. Additionally, the performance of proposed separate
perceptual encryption scheme has been thoroughly evaluated in terms of security and
compression efficiency. The scheme is found to be simpler in implementation, have
insignificant effect on compression ratios and provide more options for the selection
of control factor

Secure digital documents using Steganography and QR Code
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonWith the increasing use of the Internet several problems have arisen regarding the processing of electronic documents. These include content filtering, content retrieval/search. Moreover, document security has taken a centre stage including copyright protection, broadcast monitoring etc. There is an acute need of an effective tool which can find the identity, location and the time when the document was created so that it can be determined whether or not the contents of the document were tampered with after creation. Owing the sensitivity of the large amounts of data which is processed on a daily basis, verifying the authenticity and integrity of a document is more important now than it ever was. Unsurprisingly document authenticity verification has become the centre of attention in the world of research. Consequently, this research is concerned with creating a tool which deals with the above problem. This research proposes the use of a Quick Response Code as a message carrier for Text Key-print. The Text Key-print is a novel method which employs the basic element of the language (i.e. Characters of the alphabet) in order to achieve authenticity of electronic documents through the transformation of its physical structure into a logical structured relationship. The resultant dimensional matrix is then converted into a binary stream and encapsulated with a serial number or URL inside a Quick response Code (QR code) to form a digital fingerprint mark. For hiding a QR code, two image steganography techniques were developed based upon the spatial and the transform domains. In the spatial domain, three methods were proposed and implemented based on the least significant bit insertion technique and the use of pseudorandom number generator to scatter the message into a set of arbitrary pixels. These methods utilise the three colour channels in the images based on the RGB model based in order to embed one, two or three bits per the eight bit channel which results in three different hiding capacities. The second technique is an adaptive approach in transforming domain where a threshold value is calculated under a predefined location for embedding in order to identify the embedding strength of the embedding technique. The quality of the generated stego images was evaluated using both objective (PSNR) and Subjective (DSCQS) methods to ensure the reliability of our proposed methods. The experimental results revealed that PSNR is not a strong indicator of the perceived stego image quality, but not a bad interpreter also of the actual quality of stego images. Since the visual difference between the cover and the stego image must be absolutely imperceptible to the human visual system, it was logically convenient to ask human observers with different qualifications and experience in the field of image processing to evaluate the perceived quality of the cover and the stego image. Thus, the subjective responses were analysed using statistical measurements to describe the distribution of the scores given by the assessors. Thus, the proposed scheme presents an alternative approach to protect digital documents rather than the traditional techniques of digital signature and watermarking
A robust region-adaptive digital image watermarking system
Digital image watermarking techniques have drawn the attention of researchers and practitioners as a means of protecting copyright in digital images. The technique involves a subset of information-hiding technologies, which work by embedding information into a host image without perceptually altering the appearance of the host image. Despite progress in digital image watermarking technology, the main objectives of the majority of research in this area remain improvements in the imperceptibility and robustness of the watermark to attacks. Watermark attacks are often deliberately applied to a watermarked image in order to remove or destroy any watermark signals in the host data. The purpose of the attack is. aimed at disabling the copyright protection system offered by watermarking technology. Our research in the area of watermark attacks found a number of different types, which can be classified into a number of categories including removal attacks, geometry attacks, cryptographic attacks and protocol attacks. Our research also found that both pixel domain and transform domain watermarking techniques share similar levels of sensitivity to these attacks. The experiment conducted to analyse the effects of different attacks on watermarked data provided us with the conclusion that each attack affects the high and low frequency part of the watermarked image spectrum differently. Furthermore, the findings also showed that the effects of an attack can be alleviated by using a watermark image with a similar frequency spectrum to that of the host image. The results of this experiment led us to a hypothesis that would be proven by applying a watermark embedding technique which takes into account all of the above phenomena. We call this technique 'region-adaptive watermarking'. Region-adaptive watermarking is a novel embedding technique where the watermark data is embedded in different regions of the host image. The embedding algorithms use discrete wavelet transforms and a combination of discrete wavelet transforms and singular value decomposition, respectively. This technique is derived from the earlier hypothesis that the robustness of a watermarking process can be improved by using watermark data in the frequency spectrum that are not too dissimilar to that of the host data. To facilitate this, the technique utilises dual watermarking technologies and embeds parts of the watermark images into selected regions of the host image. Our experiment shows that our technique improves the robustness of the watermark data to image processing and geometric attacks, thus validating the earlier hypothesis. In addition to improving the robustness of the watermark to attacks, we can also show a novel use for the region-adaptive watermarking technique as a means of detecting whether certain types of attack have occurred. This is a unique feature of our watermarking algorithm, which separates it from other state-of-the-art techniques. The watermark detection process uses coefficients derived from the region-adaptive watermarking algorithm in a linear classifier. The experiment conducted to validate this feature shows that, on average, 94.5% of all watermark attacks can be correctly detected and identified
Application of Stochastic Diffusion for Hiding High Fidelity Encrypted Images
Cryptography coupled with information hiding has received increased attention in recent years and has become a major research theme because of the importance of protecting encrypted information in any Electronic Data Interchange system in a way that is both discrete and covert. One of the essential limitations in any cryptography system is that the encrypted data provides an indication on its importance which arouses suspicion and makes it vulnerable to attack. Information hiding of Steganography provides a potential solution to this issue by making the data imperceptible, the security of the hidden information being a threat only if its existence is detected through Steganalysis. This paper focuses on a study methods for hiding encrypted information, specifically, methods that encrypt data before embedding in host data where the ‘data’ is in the form of a full colour digital image. Such methods provide a greater level of data security especially when the information is to be submitted over the Internet, for example, since a potential attacker needs to first detect, then extract and then decrypt the embedded data in order to recover the original information.
After providing an extensive survey of the current methods available, we present a new method of encrypting and then hiding full colour images in three full colour host images with out loss of fidelity following data extraction and decryption. The application of this technique, which is based on a technique called ‘Stochastic Diffusion’ are wide ranging and include covert image information interchange, digital image authentication, video authentication, copyright protection and digital rights management of image data in general
