    Maritime Robotics and Autonomous Systems Operations: Exploring Pathways for Overcoming International Techno-Regulatory Data Barriers

    The current regulatory landscape that applies to maritime service robotics, aptly termed as robotics and autonomous systems (RAS), is quite complex. When it comes to patents, there are multifarious considerations in relation to vessel survey, inspection, and maintenance processes under national and international law. Adherence is challenging, given that the traditional delivery methods are viewed as unsafe, strenuous, and laborious. Service robotics, namely micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) or drones, magnetic-wheeled crawlers (crawlers), and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), function by relying on the architecture of the Internet of Robotic Things. The aforementioned are being introduced as time-saving apparatuses, accompanied by the promise to acquire concrete and sufficient data for the identification of vessel structural weaknesses with the highest level of accuracy to facilitate decision-making processes upon which temporary and permanent measures are contingent. Nonetheless, a noticeable critical issue associated with RAS effective deployment revolves around non-personal data governance, which comprises the main analytical focus of this research effort. The impetus behind this study stems from the need to enquire whether “data” provisions within the realm of international technological regulatory (techno-regulatory) framework is sufficient, well organized, and harmonized so that there are no current or future conflicts with promulgated theoretical dimensions of data that drive all subject matter-oriented actions. As is noted from the relevant expository research, the challenges are many. Engineering RAS to perfection is not the end-all and be-all. Collateral impediments must be avoided. A safety net needs to be devised to protect non-personal data. The results here indicate that established data decision dimensions call for data security and protection, as well as a consideration of ownership and liability details. An analysis of the state-of-the-art and the comparative results assert that the abovementioned remain neglected in the current international setting. The findings reveal specific data barriers within the existing international framework. The ways forward include strategic actions to remove data barriers towards overall efficacy of maritime RAS operations. The overall findings indicate that an effective transition to RAS operations requires optimizing the international regulatory framework for opening the pathways for effective RAS operations. Conclusions were drawn based on the premise that policy reform is inevitable in order to push the RAS agenda forward before the emanation of 6G and the era of the Internet of Everything, with harmonization and further standardization being very high priority issues

    Legal compliance by design (LCbD) and through design (LCtD) : preliminary survey

The purpose of this paper is twofold: (i) carrying out a preliminary survey of the literature and research projects on Compliance by Design (CbD); and (ii) clarifying the double process of (a) extending business managing techniques to other regulatory fields, and (b) converging trends in legal theory, legal technology and Artificial Intelligence. The paper highlights the connections and differences we found across different domains and proposals. We distinguish three different policydriven types of CbD: (i) business, (ii) regulatory, (iii) and legal. The recent deployment of ethical views, and the implementation of general principles of privacy and data protection lead to the conclusion that, in order to appropriately define legal compliance, Compliance through Design (CtD) should be differentiated from CbD

    Business process (BP) analysis is one of the core activities in organisations that lead to improvements and achievement of a competitive edge. BP modelling and simulation are one of the most widely applied methods for analysing and improving BPs. The analysis requires to model BP and to apply analysis techniques to the models to answer queries leading to improvements. The input of the analysis process is BP models. The models can be in the form of BP models using industry-accepted BP modelling languages, mathematical models, simulation models and others. The model creation is the most important part of the BP analysis, and it is both time-consuming and costly activity. Nowadays most of the data generated in the organisations are electronic. Therefore, the re-use of such data can improve the results of the analysis. Thus, the main goal of the thesis is to improve BP analysis and simulation by proposing a method to discover a BP model from an event log and automate simulation model generation. The dissertation consists of an introduction, three main chapters and general conclusions. The first chapter discusses BP analysis methods. In addition, the process mining research area is presented, the techniques for automated model discovery, model validation and execution prediction are analysed. The second part of the chapter investigates the area of BP simula-tion. The second chapter of the dissertation presents a novel method which automatically discovers Bayesian Belief Network from an event log and, furthermore, automatically generates BP simulation model. The discovery of the Bayesian Belief Network consists of three steps: the discovery of a directed acyclic graph, generation of conditional probability tables and their combination. The BP simulation model is generated from the discovered directed acyclic graph and uses the belief network inferences during the simulation to infer the execution of the BP and to generate activity data dur-ing the simulation. The third chapter presents the experimental research of the proposed network and discusses the validity of the research and experiments. The experiments use selected logs that exhibit a wide array of behaviour. The experiments are performed in order to test the discovery of the graphs, the inference of the current process instance execution probability, the predic-tion of the future execution of the process instances and the correctness of the simulation. The results of the dissertation were published in 9 scientific publica-tions, 2 of which were in reviewed scientific journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics Science Citation Index

    Dynamic Workflow-Engine

    We present and assess the novel thesis that a language commonly accepted for requirement elicitation is worth using for configuration of business process automation systems. We suggest that Cockburn's well accepted requirements elicitation language - the written use case language, with a few extensions, ought to be used as a workflow modelling language. We evaluate our thesis by studying in detail an industrial implementation of a workflow engine whose workflow modelling language is our extended written use case language; by surveying the variety of business processes that can be expressed by our extended written use case language; and by empirically assessing the readability of our extended written use case language. Our contribution is sixfold: (i) an architecture with which a workflow engine whose workflow modelling language is an extended written use case language can be built, configured, used and monitored; (ii) a detailed study of an industrial implementation of use case oriented workflow engine; (iii) assessment of the expressive power of the extended written use case language which is based on a known pattern catalogue; (iv) another assessments of the expressive power of the extended written use case language which is based on an equivalence to a formal model that is known to be expressive; (v) an empirical evaluation in industrial context of the readability of our extended written use case language in comparison to the readability of the incumbent graphical languages; and (vi) reflections upon the state of the art, methodologies, our results, and opportunities for further research. Our conclusions are that a workflow engine whose workflow modelling language is an extended written use case language can be built, configured, used and monitored; that in an environment that calls upon an extended written use case language as a workflow modelling language, the transition between the modelling and verification state, enactment state, and monitoring state is dynamic; that a use case oriented workflow engine was implemented in industrial settings and that the approach was well accepted by management, workflow configuration officers and workflow participants alike; that the extended written use case language is quite expressive, as much as the incumbent graphical languages; and that in industrial context an extended written use case language is an efficient communication device amongst stakeholders

    Relationship management and institutional interplay in business networks : essays on case studies from the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare markets

    The aim of this explorative dissertation, consisting of four essays and a summary, is to increase understanding of: 1) business networks as the structure of exchange in the healthcare market, 2) related relationship-management practices and 3) their interplay with the institutional environment. This is of topical interest in that Western European and especially the Nordic Beveridge-style healthcare systems, have repeatedly been subject to reform and deregulation in recent years. The public sector is opening up its service production to other providers, and abandoning its monopoly and hierarchical exchange structure. Emerging new technologies, increasing innovation and commercial pressures are changing the constituent relations in the pharmaceutical industry. Business networks are emerging as the new structure of exchange in the healthcare market. So far, environmental conceptualizations have not attracted major interest among researchers investigating the healthcare market, business networks or relationship management. The task-environment view has dominated and the impact of the institutional environment on relationship-management practices and relational structures has not been in focus. Further, neo-institutional theory is conceptually rich, but poor in managerial implication. Research on how institutions, business networks and relationship-management practices interpenetrate and influence each other could enhance understanding of the healthcare industry and its marketization. Industry-specific rules, norms and cognitive templates legitimate the codes of conduct and structures for interaction in markets characterized by knowledge-intensive co-operation and strong institutional order. As a result, various relationships with existing and emerging institutions are crucial to the business, and form the basis of customer-relationshipmanagement practices and the building up of customer portfolios. Relationships in the pharmaceutical business are typically managed across customer-facing functions as portfolios. These functions tend to operate under business-specific institutional rules in the form of legislation and explicit codes of conduct, and with systemic relational structures. iii Dynamic institutional environment, the associated disruptions and institutionalization processes exert pressure on economic actors. This results in changing business networks, and transient perceptions of legitimacy and isomorphism to which the actors adapt by changing their relationship-management practices and restructuring their relationship portfolios. On the other hand, institutional dynamism could create new business opportunities. This study thus underlines the importance of understanding the influence of the dynamics of the institutional environment on business relationships. It also sheds light on how companies can utilize this influence to some extent by acting as institutional entrepreneurs while driving their business aspirations and interests through collective action via strategic networks, for example. However, management can never know for sure or fully control what the counterpart will or can do. Certain types of reactions can only be anticipated especially in the case of business relationships in the public interest with all the potential socio-political aspirations and economic gains (e.g., unmet medical needs and their public funding) involved. The findings of this study indicate that when there is mutual interest and intention, and the ability to jointly develop and utilize relationships as channels of influence and adaptation, it is easier to foresee the reactions of counterparts. The network could then be cooperationally managed, to a certain degree, with reciprocal relationship-management activities drawn from institutionalized mechanisms and arrangements that coordinate and control the market

    Business Process Management and Process Mining within a Real Business Environment: An Empirical Analysis of Event Logs Data in a Consulting Project

    Il presente elaborato esplora l’attitudine delle organizzazioni nei confronti dei processi di business che le sostengono: dalla semi-assenza di struttura, all’organizzazione funzionale, fino all’avvento del Business Process Reengineering e del Business Process Management, nato come superamento dei limiti e delle problematiche del modello precedente. All’interno del ciclo di vita del BPM, trova spazio la metodologia del process mining, che permette un livello di analisi dei processi a partire dagli event data log, ossia dai dati di registrazione degli eventi, che fanno riferimento a tutte quelle attivitĂ  supportate da un sistema informativo aziendale. Il process mining puĂČ essere visto come naturale ponte che collega le discipline del management basate sui processi (ma non data-driven) e i nuovi sviluppi della business intelligence, capaci di gestire e manipolare l’enorme mole di dati a disposizione delle aziende (ma che non sono process-driven). Nella tesi, i requisiti e le tecnologie che abilitano l’utilizzo della disciplina sono descritti, cosi come le tre tecniche che questa abilita: process discovery, conformance checking e process enhancement. Il process mining Ăš stato utilizzato come strumento principale in un progetto di consulenza da HSPI S.p.A. per conto di un importante cliente italiano, fornitore di piattaforme e di soluzioni IT. Il progetto a cui ho preso parte, descritto all’interno dell’elaborato, ha come scopo quello di sostenere l’organizzazione nel suo piano di improvement delle prestazioni interne e ha permesso di verificare l’applicabilitĂ  e i limiti delle tecniche di process mining. Infine, nell’appendice finale, Ăš presente un paper da me realizzato, che raccoglie tutte le applicazioni della disciplina in un contesto di business reale, traendo dati e informazioni da working papers, casi aziendali e da canali diretti.
