    Detecting covert communication channels in raster images

    Digital image steganography is a method for hiding secret messages within everyday Internet communication channels. Such covert communications provide protection for communications and exploit the opportunities available in digital media. Digital image steganography makes the nature and content of a message invisible to other users by taking ordinary internet artefacts and using them as cover objects for the messages. In this paper we demonstrate the capability with raster image files and discuss the challenges of detecting such covert communications. The contribution of the research is community awareness of covert communication capability in digital media and the motivation for including such checks in any investigatory analysis

    Discovering New Vulnerabilities in Computer Systems

    Vulnerability research plays a key role in preventing and defending against malicious computer system exploitations. Driven by a multi-billion dollar underground economy, cyber criminals today tirelessly launch malicious exploitations, threatening every aspect of daily computing. to effectively protect computer systems from devastation, it is imperative to discover and mitigate vulnerabilities before they fall into the offensive parties\u27 hands. This dissertation is dedicated to the research and discovery of new design and deployment vulnerabilities in three very different types of computer systems.;The first vulnerability is found in the automatic malicious binary (malware) detection system. Binary analysis, a central piece of technology for malware detection, are divided into two classes, static analysis and dynamic analysis. State-of-the-art detection systems employ both classes of analyses to complement each other\u27s strengths and weaknesses for improved detection results. However, we found that the commonly seen design patterns may suffer from evasion attacks. We demonstrate attacks on the vulnerabilities by designing and implementing a novel binary obfuscation technique.;The second vulnerability is located in the design of server system power management. Technological advancements have improved server system power efficiency and facilitated energy proportional computing. However, the change of power profile makes the power consumption subjected to unaudited influences of remote parties, leaving the server systems vulnerable to energy-targeted malicious exploit. We demonstrate an energy abusing attack on a standalone open Web server, measure the extent of the damage, and present a preliminary defense strategy.;The third vulnerability is discovered in the application of server virtualization technologies. Server virtualization greatly benefits today\u27s data centers and brings pervasive cloud computing a step closer to the general public. However, the practice of physical co-hosting virtual machines with different security privileges risks introducing covert channels that seriously threaten the information security in the cloud. We study the construction of high-bandwidth covert channels via the memory sub-system, and show a practical exploit of cross-virtual-machine covert channels on virtualized x86 platforms

    An evidence synthesis of covert online strategies regarding intimate partner violence

    This systematic review synthesises evidence of how people use the internet to deploy covert strategies around escaping from, or perpetrating, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Online tools and services can facilitate individuals leaving abusive relationships, yet they can also act as a barrier to departure. They may also enable abusive behaviours. A comprehensive literature search of published and unpublished studies in electronic databases was conducted. Two researchers independently screened abstracts and full-texts for study eligibility and evaluated the quality of included studies. The systematic review includes 22 studies (9 qualitative and 11 cross-sectional studies, a Randomized control trial and a Non-randomized study), published between 2004 and 2017. Four covert behaviours linked to covert online strategies around IPV were identified: presence online, granular control, use of digital support tools and services, stalking and surveillance. The same technology that provides individuals with easy access to information and supportive services related to IPV, such as digital devices, tools and services, also enables perpetrators to monitor or harass their partners. This review takes a rigorous interdisciplinary approach to synthesising knowledge on the covert strategies adopted by people in relation to IPV. It has particular relevance to practitioners who support survivors in increasing awareness of the role of digital technologies in IPV, to law enforcement agencies in identifying new forms of evidence of abuse, and in enabling designers of online/social media applications to take the needs and vulnerabilities of IPV survivors into account

    A roadside units positioning framework in the context of vehicle-to-infrastructure based on integrated AHP-entropy and group-VIKOR

    The positioning of roadside units (RSUs) in a vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication system may have an impact on network performance. Optimal RSU positioning is required to reduce cost and maintain the quality of service. However, RSU positioning is considered a difficult task due to numerous criteria, such as the cost of RSUs, the intersection area and communication strength, which affect the positioning process and must be considered. Furthermore, the conflict and trade-off amongst these criteria and the significance of each criterion are reflected on the RSU positioning process. Towards this end, a four-stage methodology for a new RSU positioning framework using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) in V2I communication system context has been designed. Real time V2I hardware for data collection purpose was developed. This hardware device consisted of multi mobile-nodes (in the car) and RSUs and connected via an nRF24L01+ PA/LNA transceiver module with a microcontroller. In the second phase, different testing scenarios were identified to acquire the required data from the V2I devices. These scenarios were evaluated based on three evaluation attributes. A decision matrix consisted of the scenarios as alternatives and its assessment per criterion was constructed. In the third phase, the alternatives were ranked using hybrid of MCDM techniques, specifically the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Entropy and Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). The result of each decision ranking was aggregated using Borda voting approach towards a final group ranking. Finally, the validation process was made to ensure the ranking result undergoes a systematic and valid rank. The results indicate the following: (1) The rank of scenarios obtained from group VIKOR suggested the second scenario with, four RSUs, a maximum distance of 200 meters between RSUs and the antennas height of two-meter, is the best positioning scenarios; and (2) in the objective validation. The study also reported significant differences between the scores of the groups, indicating that the ranking results are valid. Finally, the integration of AHP, Entropy and VIKOR has effectively solved the RSUs positioning problems
