    Location reliability and gamification mechanisms for mobile crowd sensing

    People-centric sensing with smart phones can be used for large scale sensing of the physical world by leveraging the sensors on the phones. This new type of sensing can be a scalable and cost-effective alternative to deploying static wireless sensor networks for dense sensing coverage across large areas. However, mobile people-centric sensing has two main issues: 1) Data reliability in sensed data and 2) Incentives for participants. To study these issues, this dissertation designs and develops McSense, a mobile crowd sensing system which provides monetary and social incentives to users. This dissertation proposes and evaluates two protocols for location reliability as a step toward achieving data reliability in sensed data, namely, ILR (Improving Location Reliability) and LINK (Location authentication through Immediate Neighbors Knowledge). ILR is a scheme which improves the location reliability of mobile crowd sensed data with minimal human efforts based on location validation using photo tasks and expanding the trust to nearby data points using periodic Bluetooth scanning. LINK is a location authentication protocol working independent of wireless carriers, in which nearby users help authenticate each other’s location claims using Bluetooth communication. The results of experiments done on Android phones show that the proposed protocols are capable of detecting a significant percentage of the malicious users claiming false location. Furthermore, simulations with the LINK protocol demonstrate that LINK can effectively thwart a number of colluding user attacks. This dissertation also proposes a mobile sensing game which helps collect crowd sensing data by incentivizing smart phone users to play sensing games on their phones. We design and implement a first person shooter sensing game, “Alien vs. Mobile User”, which employs techniques to attract users to unpopular regions. The user study results show that mobile gaming can be a successful alternative to micro-payments for fast and efficient area coverage in crowd sensing. It is observed that the proposed game design succeeds in achieving good player engagement

    A unified approach to the development and usage of mobile agents

    Mobile agents are an interesting approach to the development of distributed systems. By moving freely accross the network, they allow for the distribution of computation as well as gathering and filtering of information in an autonomous way. Over the last decade, the agent research community has decidedly achieved tremendous results. However, the community was not able to provide easy to use toolkits to make this paradigm available to a broader audience. By embracing simplicity during the creation of a formal model and a reference implementation to create and execute instances of that model, our aim is to enable a wide audience – even non-experts – to create, adapt and use mobile agents. The proposed model allows for the creation of agents by combining atomic, self-contained building blocks and we provide an approachable, easy to use graphical editor for the creation of model instances.     Secure, Efficient and Privacy-aware Framework for Unstructured Peer-to-Peer Networks

    Recently, the advances in Ubiquitous Computing networks and the increased computational power of network devices have led designers to create more flexible distributed network models using decentralised network management systems. Security, resilience and privacy issues within such distributed systems become more complicated while important tasks such as routing, service access and state management become increasingly challenging. Low-level protocols over ubiquitous decentralised systems, which provide autonomy to network nodes, have replaced the traditional client-server arrangements in centralised systems. Small World networks represent a model that addresses many existing challenges within Ubiquitous Computing networks. Therefore, it is imperative to study the properties of Small World networks to help understanding, modelling and improving the performance, usability and resiliency of Ubiquitous Computing networks. Using the network infrastructure and trusted relationships in the Small World networks, this work proposes a framework to enhance security, resilience and trust within scalable Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. The proposed framework consists of three major components namely network-aware topology construction, anonymous global communication using community trust, and efficient search and broadcasting based on granularity and pro-active membership management. We utilise the clustering co-efficient and conditional preferential attachment to propose a novel topology construction scheme that organises nodes into groups of trusted users to improve scalability. Network nodes communicate locally without advertising node identity at a global scale, which ensures user anonymity. The global communication is organised and facilitated by Service Centres to maintain security, privacy and integrity of member nodes. Service Centres are allocated using a novel leader election mechanism within unstructured scalable P2P networks. This allows providing fair and equitable access for existing and new nodes without having to make complex changes to the network topology. Moreover, the scale-free and clustering co-efficient characteristics of Small World networks help organising the network layout to maintain its balance in terms of the nodes distribution. Simulation results show that the proposed framework ensures better scalability and membership management in unstructured P2P networks, and improves the performance of the search and broadcasting in terms of the average shortest path and control overhead while maintaining user anonymity and system resiliency
