On Achieving Diversity in the Presence of Outliers in Participatory Camera Sensor Networks
This paper addresses the problem of collection and
delivery of a representative subset of pictures, in participatory camera networks, to maximize coverage when a significant portion of the pictures may be redundant or irrelevant. Consider, for example, a rescue mission where volunteers and survivors of a large-scale disaster scout a wide area to capture pictures of
damage in distressed neighborhoods, using handheld cameras, and report them to a rescue station. In this participatory camera network, a significant amount of pictures may be redundant (i.e., similar pictures may be reported by many) or irrelevant (i.e., may
not document an event of interest). Given this pool of pictures, we aim to build a protocol to store and deliver a smaller subset of pictures, among all those taken, that minimizes redundancy and eliminates irrelevant objects and outliers. While previous work addressed removal of redundancy alone, doing so in the presence of outliers is tricky, because outliers, by their very nature, are different from other objects, causing redundancy minimizing algorithms to favor their inclusion, which is at odds with the goal of finding a representative subset. To eliminate both outliers and redundancy at the same time, two seemingly opposite objectives must be met together. The contribution of this

Adaptive Representations for Tracking Breaking News on Twitter
Twitter is often the most up-to-date source for finding and tracking breaking
news stories. Therefore, there is considerable interest in developing filters
for tweet streams in order to track and summarize stories. This is a
non-trivial text analytics task as tweets are short, and standard retrieval
methods often fail as stories evolve over time. In this paper we examine the
effectiveness of adaptive mechanisms for tracking and summarizing breaking news
stories. We evaluate the effectiveness of these mechanisms on a number of
recent news events for which manually curated timelines are available.
Assessments based on ROUGE metrics indicate that an adaptive approaches are
best suited for tracking evolving stories on Twitter.Comment: 8 Pag
Towards a Secure Smart Grid Storage Communications Gateway
This research in progress paper describes the role of cyber security measures
undertaken in an ICT system for integrating electric storage technologies into
the grid. To do so, it defines security requirements for a communications
gateway and gives detailed information and hands-on configuration advice on
node and communication line security, data storage, coping with backend M2M
communications protocols and examines privacy issues. The presented research
paves the road for developing secure smart energy communications devices that
allow enhancing energy efficiency. The described measures are implemented in an
actual gateway device within the HORIZON 2020 project STORY, which aims at
developing new ways to use storage and demonstrating these on six different

Back to practice, a decade of research in E-government
E-government is a multidisciplinary field of research based initially on empirical insights from practice. Efforts to theoretically found the field have opened perspectives from multiple research domains. The goal of this chapter is to review evolution of the e-government field from an institutional and an academic point of view. Our position is that e-government is an emergent multidisciplinary field of research in which focus on practice is a prominent characteristic. Contextualized B2B Registries
Abstract. Service discovery is a fundamental concept underpinning the move towards dynamic service-oriented business partnerships. The business process for integrating service discovery and underlying registry technologies into business relationships, procurement and project management functions has not been examined and hence existing Web Service registries lack capabilities required by business today. In this paper we present a novel contextualized B2B registry that supports dynamic registration and discovery of resources within management contexts to ensure that the search space is constrained to the scope of authorized and legitimate resources only. We describe how the registry has been deployed in three case studies from important economic sectors (aerospace, automotive, pharmaceutical) showing how contextualized discovery can support distributed product development processes
Bridging the Gap Between Retrieval and Summarization
Information Retrieval is, at its core, a field focused on providing information to users to fulfill an information need. One of the most common use cases of Information Retrieval is document-level retrieval, which seeks to provide a collection of documents to the user that addresses their needs. In contrast to this, single document retrieval seeks to instead provide the user with a single document comprised of all required information. We seek to extend single document retrieval to single document generation, in which we use multiple source documents to create a new document which directly addresses the information need
