    Remote sensing operations (multispectral scanner and photographic) in the New York Bight, 22 September 1975

    Ocean dumping of waste materials is a significant environmental concern in the New York Bight. One of these waste materials, sewage sludge, was monitored in an experiment conducted in the New York Bight on September 22, 1975. Remote sensing over controlled sewage sludge dumping included an 11-band multispectral scanner, fiver multispectral cameras and one mapping camera. Concurrent in situ water samples were taken and acoustical measurements were made of the sewage sludge plumes. Data were obtained for sewage sludge plumes resulting from line (moving barge) and spot (stationary barge) dumps. Multiple aircraft overpasses were made to evaluate temporal effects on the plume signature

    One component of Space Traffic Management (STM) is on-orbit Space Situational Awareness (SSA) systems and services. Advances in technology and a growing demand for SSA services, information, and data, coupled with U.S. Government policy that promotes the purchase and use of commercial SSA capabilities, means that private commercial sector is likely to have an important role to play. To date, there is no federal agency with clear jurisdiction over on-orbit remote sensing operations. High resolution radar imaging, however, is a remote sensing subcategory that requires raw radar data to be collected over an artificially extended aperture that is much larger than the radar receiving antenna and processed to create a reflectivity image of a scene (typically by backprojection methods). These synthetic aperture radar imaging (SAR) methods have been in use for over 50 years and, while the methodology for simple radar imaging is quite mature, there are still many active research programs seeking to extend the quality of—and information obtained from—SAR images

    Hardware design of a small UAS helicopter for remote sensing operations

    This paper presents the hardware design and integration process employed to develop an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) helicopter. The design process evolves from the bare airframe (without any electronics), to become a complete and advanced UAS platform for remote sensing applications. The improvements, design decisions and justifications are described throughout the paper. Two airframes have been used during the design and integration process: the AF25B model and the more advanced AF30 model, from the Copterworks company. The airframe engine reliability and fuel economy have been improved by adding an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI), both managed by an Engine Control Unit (ECU). On-board power supply generation and regulation have also been designed and validated. Finally, the integration process incorporates on-board mission computation to improve the concept of operation in remote sensing applications. Several flight tests have been performed to verify the reliability of the whole system.     Major constraints to the utilization of LANDSAT by state governments are identified. Six recommendations are made: (1) commitment by the federal government to assure LANDSAT data continuity and compatibility; (2) federal support of LANDSAT system; (3) federal agency responsibility should be clearly defined; (4) commitment by the federal government to prior consultation with the state in LANDSAT decisions; (5) commitment by the federal government to systematic and ongoing technology transfer programs; and (6) improvement of the data processing and delivery system. The transfer of technology from NOAA to the private sector and its impact on the state governments utilizing LANDSAT are also discussed
