Fundamentals of lubricated friction in deep drawing of zinc coated sheet metal considering contacting surface morphology and chemistry
Estimated Viscosities and Thermal Conductivities of Gases at High Temperatures
Viscosities and thermal conductivities, suitable for heat-transfer calculations, were estimated for about 200 gases in the ground state from 100 to 5000 K and 1-atmosphere pressure. Free radicals were included, but excited states and ions were not. Calculations for the transport coefficients were based upon the Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential for all gases. This potential was selected because: (1) It is one of the most realistic models available and (2) intermolecular force constants can be estimated from physical properties or by other techniques when experimental data are not available; such methods for estimating force constants are not as readily available for other potentials. When experimental viscosity data were available, they were used to obtain the force constants; otherwise the constants were estimated. These constants were then used to calculate both the viscosities and thermal conductivities tabulated in this report. For thermal conductivities of polyatomic gases an Eucken-type correction was made to correct for exchange between internal and translational energies. Though this correction may be rather poor at low temperatures, it becomes more satisfactory with increasing temperature. It was not possible to obtain force constants from experimental thermal conductivity data except for the inert atoms, because most conductivity data are available at low temperatures only (200 to 400 K), the temperature range where the Eucken correction is probably most in error. However, if the same set of force constants is used for both viscosity and thermal conductivity, there is a large degree of cancellation of error when these properties are used in heat-transfer equations such as the Dittus-Boelter equation. It is therefore concluded that the properties tabulated in this report are suitable for heat-transfer calculations of gaseous systems
Scaling relations in large-Prandtl-number natural thermal convection
In this study we follow Grossmann and Lohse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86 (2001), who
derived various scalings regimes for the dependence of the Nusselt number
and the Reynolds number on the Rayleigh number and the Prandtl number
. We focus on theoretical arguments as well as on numerical simulations for
the case of large- natural thermal convection. Based on an analysis of
self-similarity of the boundary layer equations, we derive that in this case
the limiting large- boundary-layer dominated regime is I,
introduced and defined in [1], with the scaling relations and . Our direct numerical
simulations for from to and from 0.1 to 200 show that
the regime I is almost indistinguishable from the regime
III, where the kinetic dissipation is bulk-dominated. With increasing
, the scaling relations undergo a transition to those in IV of
reference [1], where the thermal dissipation is determined by its bulk
contribution
Boundary layers and resistance on liquid motion with only slight friction
The laws of fluid motion are examined systematically for the case where friction is assumed to be very slight. Calculations are carried out with the appropriate differential equation and practical investigations are illustrated
Free Boundary Formulation for BVPs on a Semi-Infinite Interval and Non-Iterative Transformation Methods
This paper is concerned with two examples on the application of the free
boundary formulation to BVPs on a semi-infinite interval. In both cases we are
able to provide the exact solution of both the BVP and its free boundary
formulation. Therefore, these problems can be used as benchmarks for the
numerical methods applied to BVPs on a semi-infinite interval and to free BVPs.
Moreover, we emphasize how for two classes of free BVPs, we can define
non-iterative initial value methods, whereas BVPs are usually solved
iteratively. These non-iterative methods can be deduced within Lie's group
invariance theory. Then, we show how to apply the non-iterative methods to the
two introduced free boundary formulations in order to obtain meaningful
numerical results. Finally, we indicate several problems from the literature
where our non-iterative transformation methods can be applied.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, 4 table
